I'm from Dexter, and I'd always heard that the reason we have a bootheel was because the man who owned most of the acreage in Dunklin and Pemiscot counties said there was no way he would put up with being in Arkansas, so they changed all the maps to suit him...he showed good sense...I get a kick outta hearin' her talk...don'know boutchu, but I say 'Mizzoura'...how do ya make an Arkansawyer's eyes sparkle? Shine a flashlight in their ear...

This is great. I am glad this was posted. My family left Missouri in 1888 and became Sooners. But is a wonderful to understand how this state was formed.

As a lifelong Missourian, I pronounce it Mizz-oo-ree. I, personally, don't care how you pronounce it.

lets just agree to call it Misery to increase our potential for sardonic jokes. and its nether like netherworld, because ornery comes from the word ordinary.

You can't pronouce an i with the a sound. It doesn't work. If it was supposed to be pronounced with the a then it should be spelled that way.

@@SteveHolsten is that just part of a preserved culture, or is it a dislike of the people? I'm interested in knowing. No judgement here.

@@blackhavenranch7293 It's just preserved culture & not meant in a bad way!

@@SteveHolsten I get it. Thanks for the reply. I'm currently building a homestead for my family near Dora, though I'm from Chicago, I'm no city slicker..... I have a lot of respect for the people and preserved history of the Ozarks. Reminds me of the stories my grandfather tells about sharecropping in Mississippi. I want my children to grow up understanding honest hard work.

@@blackhavenranch7293 I can tell you're a good person. I believe you'll have a good life in Dora. It's 157 miles northwest of here.
