Cats work. I ended up getting 3 of them. Best rodent repellent ever😊 trust me I've tried everything steal whole poison traps exterminators and even the exterminator suggested cats. So I finally gave in. Brought in 3 cats no more problems 18 years later. Btw your dog and cats will adjust. Cats can very easily adapt and so will your dog.

Hi Sarah! I used to have a cat, a long time ago. She would bring me mice as a gift. Nothing like stepping on a cold dead mouse in the middle of the night that she laid in the doorway of the bedroom. Why there, I don't know, but that is where she would leave them every time. I am sure that eventually Kenai would adjust, or that I will find a dead cat. I think I would rather not go through the hassle of him chasing the cat or the fights that would ensue. When the time comes to get a new puppy, I will probably get a cat at the same time. 🤗💛

There are devices that you can plug into a wall socket. They make a sound that scares away rodents and insects. I have found that it works well against mice. And inaudible to K9.

I've found that it takes 3-4 years of plugging entry points to be able to mitigate 99% of the rodents that get into your house, if you're proactive to stay on it a couple times a year. They get more creative each hole you block, until they finally try chewing through. So it takes a while to observe the progression. Even then you get the ones that nest outside your doors so they can run in when you have the door open. And one mouse can turn into a large family in your walls pretty quick. Then you can start noticing the ant egresses ;)

Good Morning Alone, Whew, those mice! and the ermine! So glad for you that you're able to spot the entrances and then, to know to get the underside of the roof trim (I don't know what to call it) taken care of. To me, finding the solution is 95% of the resolving. You'll get it taken care of soon... WOW, seems you really hit the ground running since your friend and family visits were over. So many projects to get on top of before the snow hits.. So grateful that you have all of the needed energy, strength and stamina to 'get 'er done'.. Your property looks so different since the 'machine' came in to take care of the flattening the land, taking off corners on the driveway etc! Looking forward to seeing how you're NOT going to have any flooding in your driveway any longer... Kenai's coat is so beautiful.. Glad you got the ladder all set and anchored to access the roof!.. Til next time. Love to you and Kenai.. Your Alaska pics are so beautiful- thank you for sharing the fauna, flora and critters. Love your accompanying music as well : )

We had some contractors build the outer shell of our log cabin home and the roof. My husband helped and he critter proof the whole outer log shell as they were building it. That was sure a blessing. My mom and dad bought a place and now my step dad has been trying to critter proof their place over the years but they still have mice once in awhile. It sure isn't fun. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. Thanks for showing Kenai, he's so precious and sweet. It's looking wonderful all around your property. Take care and God Bless you and Kenai always

Get a tin bean can , remove top and bottom to make a cylinder, thread a thickish string through it and tie the string accross a bucket of water.Smear the tin with peanut butter.They will drown in the bucket.I used this method and was good. Put the bucket where they come in.Once you find points of entry it will work.They have to come out for water and food.

I lived in a log cabin in the woods for 20 years, and I went through all this too. For the entry points between the roof and ceilings, I used a roll of wire that I got from the feed store. I can’t remember what it was designed for, but it had small enough holes that the average field mouse couldn’t fit through, and I used screws to attach it to the corners where they were coming in, then I foamed that in for insulation. But what ultimately eradicated the problem ware those commercial sized bait traps you see behind restaurants, with a concrete bottom and a large bait holder. I had to get those from a commercial outlet that specializes in pest control. But for this to be most effective, I had to place them every 20ft around the perimeter of my house. I had 10 bait traps around a 2400sq ft home. And It was a lot of poison, that came in a 5 gallon bucket. But, I had no problems after that. I would check and rebait them 2-3 times a year.

Hi Beth! Yes, the moisture meter is awesome. I was really surprised to see that the first piece that I had shown, which had been laying in a puddle for days, had nearly the same moisture content of the last piece. Both the first and the last were from the newly delivered firewood. The second piece was from last year's firewood delivery. Big difference! 😳💛

@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 10 месяцев назад
Hi Tom! Yes, I would think cats would have an impact one way or another on the wildlife; either feasting at will or becoming a feast for some other critter. I cannot even imagine having an outdoor cat here. Even large dogs have become prey to wolves here. The work never stops, but I am okay with that. Keeps me out of trouble. 😉 Glad you enjoy the scenery, and hope that you will make your way to Alaska next year. 🤗💗🐺

Hello Hello. Replace the borax with baking soda in your mouse bait. Non toxic but deadly to mice. Swells in their stomach and they can't pass it. Also try Irish spring bar soap as a deterrent. As it ages and looses it smell you can break it up or shave it down to refresh it. These two items in my off grid slab board cabin have made a huge difference.

I live in an old business in a studio apt. I spent 2 years of filling holes with steel wool and having nightmares because of it. Get some jiffy corn meal and baking soda. Put in a container ( cheap $ store) cut a hole in the side for entrance to food. They eat the baking soda it bloats them so they can’t breathe and they die. So they eat and get full and go back to where ever they came from and die. May not work if they aren’t coming in for food and are looking for a home.

You have to get really good exclusion work done to keep everything out. I know because I owned business for 26 years as a landlord and that was one of the things we always had to take care of to help the tenants. Same thing with my own house. It would be good. If you could call the company that would come out there and help you. It’s not easy to do every single thing alone. And on an economic note, feral cats are great. I did find one out here that I fed for a bit and they keep coming back and they will take care of the problem for you but it’s tricky. You have to get feral cats and get them settled. Then eventually, my feral cat died…

On that log cabin of yours, nice place btw :) , on your to-do list for next year is to redo the chinking. Think thin set with a pastry bag. You can put a dye in it to give it the color you want. There are videos on how to DIY chinking a log home. .. My place has rough sawn cedar siding. Keeping the mice out is a chore to be sure, so I feel your pain.

You need a bucket trap filled with water. Mi have lived off grid and these can catch a couple of dozen a day and not need constant resetting. Take a bucket and drill 2 holes opposite each other near the top of the bucket. Drill a hole in the bottommof a pop tin. Thread the dowel through one side of the bucket, string on the pop tin through the top and bottom, then put the dowel through the second side of the bucket. Smear the tin with peanut butter, add 6-8” of water, add a stick leaning against the bucket so the mice can climb up the bucket, onto the dowel, step onto the pop tin to feast and be dumped into the water as the tin rolls.

It's always a guarantee, if you have a large log cabin or house, you are certain to have mice and a place for them to get in. You are lucky to have an Ermine there, you should have a couple there to handle the mouse problem. Also, sometime the noise you here on the outside isn't always a mouse. This is the time Woodpeckers come around and peck on your house or cabin and Squirrels trying to get in. Your property looks a lot different with all the work that has been done. The best thing you can do is, any place there is an opening place a heavy wire mesh and make sure there are no openings. Wish you luck.

Have a professional Pest control person come out and help find all the entry points of the cabin and then fill them. Mice will continue to eat through the foam. steel wool is better maybe even using sheet metal and screws to close up the holes. You need help to remedy this problem. Get the roof people back and install soffits everywhere. You may have to pay more money to get the problem fixed. Best wishes.

We lived in Alaska from 1970 to 1999 when we retired. We did live in Anchorage but had a place on the Kenai River also. Still miss it and admire what you are doing. ❤❤

Twelve cords of wood!!!! I burn max two cords per winter and I have no insulation in my house! I can't imagine using that much wood, even in 9 months of burning. Wowee. Mice: I've had cats that were good mousers and cats that were not. No guarantees. I've also had dogs that were even better mousers than cats! I had one dog that was so fast he was a blur when he went after a mouse! Always a challenge to prep for winter.

Hi Josh! Thank you. Glad you liked it. The rain has stopped at least for the past couple of days. Now if the mice and gnats would, that would be great! 😂💛

We had a 10 acre homestead in MN and a major problem in our barn with rodents. Cats lived in the barn and removed the problem quickly. Also no more mice in the house even though they were not allowed in the house and all the other out buildings.(allergic to cats in the house)

Hi Tom! I have thought about having an outside cat, but here, there is just too much wildlife that would pick any cat off quickly. Luckily, that is one allergy I do not have is cats. But I feel for you as my son is highly allergic to cats and so I can relate. Someday, I might get a cat. Someday...🤗💛

There's a trap that is a 5 gallon bucket. The mice fall into it, can't get out.

Well, at least is a silver lining here. If you have mice you don't have rats. And if you have rats you don't have mice. Between the two, mice are less gross. But that might change. They are competing species. I am watching your vlog when I can. I didn't comment here for a long while. My personal and professional situation has changed , since last I wrote you. It looks that finally, next summer I will move on my 15 acres of raw land north east of Talkeetna and I will start building my cabin ,an outhouse of course and other structures, all in time. Right now I live in Washington state north east of Seattle. Like you, all my adult life I was attracted by an inner force and desire to move and live in Alaska. Since '90s when I used to live in Tampa Bay Area , in Florida. Alaska is a place that or you love it , or you hate it. There's no between. I enjoy your channel and I can notice your gradual adaptation and progress regarding this life style. You are doing great. Your vlogs have quality , are watchable, and are full of details and useful information. And remember: anything that doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. You are a true pioneer and how I said in the past: you have grit. I love your revolver belt. If you ever make a logo, make sure to include the gun belt and of course the revolver. An empty holster looks unsightly. Now I have to go on Craigslist to look for a 24' cargo trailer. All the best.
