This language list is ranked based on how long it takes (in hour) to reach fluency as a native english speaker. English is not included in this list because each person could learn it with different durations based mainly on what their mother language is. So there is not a specific time that applies to everybody.
When it comes to the specific hours needed to reach fluency, using the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) difficulty rankings are essential. They rank languages based on difficulty and list the exact hours needed to learn them.
Please keep in mind that this ranking only shows the view of the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) and some language students or experts may disagree with the ranking.

fun fact, you actually have to practice any langauge you've learned till the last day of your life. and that's not sad or something you have to worry about. cause in the future when you become almost fluent all what you have to worry about is including this language in your daily life as much as you can. languages is all about practicing! it's been more than 7 years since I started this journy and I'm sure that I'm making plenty of mistakes and I'm still not sure sometimes if what I'm saying is grammaly correct? but I'm satisfied and I appreciate that I learned English by my own, my goal is to be C2 in English and be good enough in Spanish wish me luck!

Me seeing these people say they’ve been studying for 3+ years and still can’t speak what their learning fluently is making me break a sweat
3 года назад
Well really it depends how you learn it, how much time you put in, how much passive exposure you get, how much abstract linguistic knowledge you have, what languages you know and what not. If all you do is learn three words a day without context, you might spend your whole life not understanding a word in the language you’re learning. If you put in a few hours a day, read and listen to content for native speakers and have regular interactions with native speakers, you can get pretty good at any language in a matter of months. During lockdown I took up Russian and six months later I spent a whole evening chatting in Russian with a Russian lady even though I’d never learnt a Slavic language before. It’s very much possible

Learning a new language can be both challenging and rewarding. When we study a new language, we expand our horizons and open up new opportunities for communication and understanding. Practice and consistency are key to mastering a language, so it's important to be patient and persistent in our efforts. By immersing ourselves in the language through listening, speaking, reading, and writing, we can gradually improve our skills and become fluent in that language. Ultimately, the journey of learning a new language can be a fulfilling experience that enriches our lives in many ways.

The difficulty of languages depends also on the degree you want to master them and the degree to which a linguistic standard is existing at all. English has an estimated vocabulary of 500,000 words (who counted them?) whereas standard Vietnamese (which also uses the latin alphabet) is estimated to have 40,000 words and has very little grammar. But lots of heavy accents and a very fine tuned pronunciation make it almost impossible to explore for outsiders. Same with Portuguese: Portuguese has no standard pronunciation. In my native language German there are in "good German" few basic words but the whole language is built with many derivations, suffixes, affixes and combined words allowing you to instantly understand new words (try this in French!). German has a tricky grammar giving you a bad start whereas in English and to a lesser degree also in French the difficulties come later. The good thing about German is that is has a standard (Hochdeutsch = high German) which is widely accepted and further pushing accents aside. And one thing about Norwegian: There are two of them, the standards Nynorsk and Bokmål. To live there you have to understand them all and are constantly in a continuum of accents that get more Swedish the closer you get to the Swedish border.
