I procrastinate the most on my artwork, not because I don't enjoy doing it, but because I'm afraid of the results not coming out as good as I want them to be.
Oh, yes, I understand. For me, I have the fears of success and failure. If it's good, the anticipation of another success is anxiety-producing. What if the follow up sucks? Ug.
Some advice on this subject: "Perfect is the enemy of good, or more literally the best is the enemy of the good, is an aphorism which is commonly attributed to Voltaire, who quoted an Italian proverb in his Dictionnaire philosophique in 1770: "Le meglio è l'inimico del bene".[2] It subsequently appeared in his moral poem, La Bégueule, which starts[3] Dans ses écrits, un sage Italien Dit que le mieux est l'ennemi du bien. (In his writings, a wise Italian says that the best is the enemy of the good)" (my source is Wikipedia)
But: if you start out earlier, you have more time to which allows you to take your time and do it to the best of your ability. If it doesn't come out as good as you hoped, you still have time to either redo it, or correct mistakes you made. In the long run, the more time you have, the more practice you are getting from doing it, and the more practice you get from doing it, the better you will get at doing it. So, rather than procrastinating at doing your art work, just tell yourself that the current project is practice for the next project to be better and all you have to do is enjoy yourself while doing it. If you're not willing to go through the time that you suck at doing artwork, you will never get to the time when you are a Rembrandt, a Picasso, a Mozart, a Beethoven, an Edison or an Einstein. Each project is not supposed to be as good as you want it to be. Each project is a step in your journey to becoming as good as you can be and you will never arrive at your destination, if you refuse to travel down the bumpy road of sucky projects. Your mission if you choose to accept it; is to do projects immediately, even when you know they're going to suck.
One last thing. If you show off the art you think sucks, you will probably find that it's a lot better than you think it is. You will also be an inspiration to artists that are less proficient than you are at art, and through this, you will become less self conscience of your art.
I have two days to finish any schoolwork i have to do cause the classrooms are being deleted on july 2nd. Its alot of work. Im dying im only in like 7th grade
Oooo I love the 5-minute rule. Sometimes, one of the biggest reasons for procrastination is exactly what you said, You create it in your head as this massive, undoable task that you keep pushing and pushing till you really have to get done. But when you actually start it, it's really simple but now you're short of time. And you wish you just got started!! At other times, you tell yourself oh, it's such a simple task and it's just going to take a few minutes. But when you sit down to do it, it's actually going to take you an entire hour and now you're, pretty much fudged! lol
Simplification sounds like such a useful tool. Honestly, most of my procrastination does come from anxiety because I complicate projects and it turns from a task into Mount Everest. So will definitely give the simplification a go. On another note, Amy, your hair looks amazing. You're doing such a great job. Keep up the amazing work, girlfriend!
RU-vid autoplayed your MAP video about a week ago--- changed my life. You've built a great community and have amazingly high quality, useful, and concise videos. So happy to be a part of it.
Alas, I tend to procrastinate when it comes to actually taking action and making changes after learning something that could benefit me. I really think it boils down to being afraid to raise the bar for myself, and being so complacent and comfortable where I am.
Let's be honest. I'm watching this video as part of my procrastination... and I just like watching Amy lol. But I love the "power hour" idea, working in the project area. That could really work for me. I love things being done and organized, but can also really procrastinate to get things done.
Love all the tips in here. I do not want to procrastinate ever again because it ruins my daily goals and my time gets messed up. Managing my own online business and affiliate marketing, this video will certainly help me to get things done in a timely manner plus I get to have extra hours to do other things. This is truly amazing!
This honestly could not have come at a better time, in England its the Easter holidays for students and the exams that determine our universities are really soon after we get back! Your channel helps me stay motivated and on top of my workload, it has completely transformed both my grades and my future! Thank you so much for putting out such amazing content! It really makes such a difference to me, whether it directly links to my life or not, because the concepts, skills and mindset advice you have given me or urged me to find on my own, allow me to make the most of every situation I find myself in. It is because of you that I am moving towards the life that I want and not just settling for what I was given; I will forever be grateful to you for this!
LOL I love how I use your videos to procrastinate studying for exams,,,better crack those books open before I get into a youtube hole of time management videos😂😂
Haha same but I think it's much better than watching Netflix etc. because these videos actually help you and motivate you so eventually you'll be like "okay time to use these advices in life..." :D
I procrastinate personally on doing the laundry. And I procrastinate in my business making outlines for topics. And yes, I already knew I was a procrastinator. If I only have two or three things that need to get done I will continually put them off until I’m up to like six or eight things, or I’m down to the last-minute whichever comes first! Love your stuff Amy!
Thank you, Amy, for the tips and especially for the idea of chronic procrastinators who aren't actually lazybones! A quick note for me of what I'll take from the video: 1. a power hour 2. the 5 minute rule 3. limit your decision-making 4. don't compare yourself 5. don't overcomplicate 6. use morning pages to braindump 7. treat yourself!
This could not have been timed better. I am literally sitting here procrastinating about cleaning my house to be ready for house guests who arrive on Tuesday. You've motivated me to get started, so I began with my office area as I listened to this video. Seems a little easier to start tackling the other jobs now that I have gotten started. Thanks so much for helping me with this!!
I procrastinate the most on paying bills & getting really important stuff done. I’m doing a lot to improve stuff such as bills automatically taken out but I’m really struggling with my budget & sticking to it. Great video!!!! Took notes in my Bullet journal!,,👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Oooh new Sunday video! Procrastination can be a total b sometimes. While I enjoy that super focused buzz of energy when the pressure is on, staying up till wee hours of the night and the stress that comes along with it.... Meh. P.S. love the new editing style of your videos Amy!
Love your videos! I procrastinate on things I don’t want to do. Especially school assignments bc I want to do them perfectly but never actually get to it.
I really enjoyed this. I am a recovering procrastinater and have been working really hard at it. I have found that if I want to do something big , for example I'm currently creating my first ecourse, instead of looking at it as a whole and getting overwhelmed, I break it down and think "OK, today I'll spend 20 minutes writing out the contents, or the headings" and leave it at that. If I can get one little part done a day, I feel I've accomplished something, however small.
Watched this twice back-to-back because I needed it! Love the “power hour” because it’s true, im not as efficient and don’t look forward to working in my office when it’s a wreck, which is often! And this is x2 since both of my offices (work and home) are a wreck. Thanks for the amazing advice and love your outfit by the way!
Great tips!! I love the Forest app to help me focus on a task and get it done!! You are building a "forest" and end up killing your trees if you don't stay off your phone. It is silly, but I actually don't want to kill my "forest" so I make sure to follow through and get a lot done by ignoring my phone during that set time! 🍰💕Maria
O. M. G! The presentation conversation!! That is me! 😂I had to laugh when I saw your example of what not to do because that is EXACTLY what I say! This was very helpful! Thank you!
I love the power hour before starting a task to at least accomplish SOMETHING while procrastinating. Also, mindless cleaning or organizing would give me the chance to mentally plan my attack on the thing I’m procrastinating!!
1-Stop comparing yourself 2-Spend time with high performers 3-power hour challenge 4-5 minute rule 5-limit decision making 6-stop overcomplicating things 7-use a treat to motivate yourself
A professional procrastinator over here ✋🏻 and you know what! I literally do all the things you said and they work very well, yes it's mentally exhausting but it gets things done
This video was just for me!!! 😜 It's always putting the clothes away that can wait one more day. It's silly, but always ends up being what trips me up.
I had been working on my assignment, ate some lunch and decided to watch some RU-vid videos. Food got finished, and I kept watching videos. Then this video came up. Thank you. :-)
Great video. I mostly procrastinate anything doing with writing and I've done it since elementary school. I would always start any writing assignment about midnight when it was due at 8am! I would always end up with an A on all my assignments so I decided it worked well for me and continued this method through college. The hardest part is definitely just getting started!
Joseph Ferrari sounds like a total genius, procrastinators have issues with focusing until the pressure is on. When you’re rewarded for it too, it ends up making the habit worse! If you get A+’s no matter if you procrastinate, the habit becomes solidified, why change when nothing negative happens except for the anxiety over your procrastination.
How appropriate, there is a presentation that I am currently procrastinating on doing, so this was very helpful! Thanks so much for your videos. I am a first time commenter, but have been a subscriber for a while. You always have so many great tips.
What helps me stop procrastinating is gaining clarity on my goals and visualizing what it’s going to be like when that THING (I’m procrastinating on) IS DONE!😆
I don't chronically procrastinate, but I realized last week that I've fallen into major procrastinating lately. Usually it's on things that need some decisions or complicated communication with other people. Thanks for the tips!
Ammmmyyyyy I just love you girl! You post what I was thinking about lately:) I was busy doing some tasks the last 5 days that I had shhhhh🤫 “procrastinated” on🤦🏻♀️🤣. It was a huge task many many hours of office paper work and filing but feels SO AMAZING to be done with that task. I wasn’t late...I was just on time😬. Thank goodness for yummy ☕️☕️☕️☕️ & your on point videos girlfriend!💛
The power hour thing is real! I clean my desk and organize my room and I instantly feel a sense of accomplishment and it gives me a feeling to do more... Guess it's just about starting little and making your surroundings ready too...
When I think about it, I'm mainly delayed with personal projects, which will illuminate not a non-technical abilities but reflective and creative and will have a significant impact.
Love the tips! Recently, I'm procrastinating the most when it comes to "voluntary work" I do for my alumni association. Not voluntary anymore once I take responsibility for a task. It's just that I don't like writing emails to strangers or scheduling meetings or writing reports. I love working with my co-members but on my own at home after work I just can't get my ass to do any more admin tasks.
As a procrastinator, I've found that breaking the projects down into smaller chunks makes everything a lot easier. For example: I have to clean the bathroom? Well, right now I'm just gonna wipe the sink and the next time I use it, I'll clean the toilet. Then later the shower. Then I'm not procrastinating/stressing about spending 3 hours at once in the bathroom. Spending a little time here and a little time there while I walk around the house has made things a lot easier. It's how much husband and I deep cleaned the house in a week. Instead of one whole day busting our butts, we broke everything down throughout the week. I'm also a writer, and if I'm procrastinating about writing, I'll just tell myself "All you need to do is write a paragraph." and then usually it ends up being a page or two.
Super helpful thank you! I do disagree with approaching things simply the way you described though. For me that makes it more overwhelming because I don't know where to start. If I break those big things down into easy steps I'm less likely to procrastinate. Another tip I use is to always finish your work at a place where you know exactly the next step so you can easily begin again 😁
I most procrastinate on doing things for my own business and career because it's vulnerable and it's easy to accept failure if you didn't try that hard.
For whatever reason you remind me of Rachel from Friends. I love your videos so much! Thank you, this helped a lot and motivated to start on school work, which is what I procrastinate most on 🙈♥️
Amy, this might be your best video yet! Thank you for the actionable solutions. I don't know if that pun was intentional or not, btw (about choosing an outfit at the last second being "fitting"), but if so, good one!
I procrastinate self care. I take a shower, and I am good. But I want to do things to make myself feel better. I am a mom of 3. Going to make myself a priority. Power hour idea is great!
LMAO about the presentation part... love your personality so much!!! Seriously girl you are rocking it. Love your humble humor and confidence. Keep it up! So helpful!!! 😘🙏🏼👊🏼✨💜
Phone calls! I HATE phone calls, they give me anxiety and I put them off until the absolute last possible minute... dont know why but I've always been like that. 🤷♀️
Same for me! Then one day a friend said to me, " The person who makes the phone call WINS! " (Because if you don't make the phone call, you can't follow-through with your project, and you will never be a winner.) This made so much sense, that I repeat this line every day to motivate myself!
So funny!! Just heard today for last few generations, phone call to us=showing up at someone’s home unannounced to them! Jeesh even at 42 y/o & w/ many friends, dates, & a few businesses plus my 9-5 wouldn’t think of calling someone!
I procrastinate on homework and laundry. My laundry sits unfolded until laundry day the next week! My homework never gets done until 12 hours before it’s due 😭😑 it’s terrible! No matter what I do, it’s like I psych myself out until the pressure kicks in. I have app blockers and everything, but it doesn’t help. I have to just force myself to do it sometimes. I give myself hours throughout the day all week and somehow I never have the time in the end. I stress the entire time too, like I have no time and then I end up with no time and the pressure is on, and the buildup is released as I actually do what I am suppose to. I have no idea what’s wrong with me.
Yes, this video was made for me. I have about 4 things I have to do but have been putting them off. It's the starting I have trouble with but once I start I generally complete it and then sit around wondering why the hell didn't I get it done sooner! Ugh. Your tips are really helpful as I've been a procrastinator my whole life. In college I had to do an art design project so naturally I left it to the last minute, thus pulling an allnighter! I think I got a B on it. Lol. Thank you Amy. I really like the tip of the power hour. ☆
I love 5 minutes rule, may I have the courage to just start because chronic procrastinators have extreme dilemma in their heads 😞 And oh ya I need Amy to continuously lecturing me (in a good way), I’m hook to this channel now!
My problem is that I have been working so hard on not procrastinating, and I've gotten better with tasks like household chores (putting the dishes away right when I get home, vaccuming, watering the plants, cleaning bathrooms, etc.) but when it comes to my passion or hobbies (reading ,writing, studying for wine school) that I really enjoy, it's like those get put on the back burner now because I try to get everything else done so quickly and I'm too mentally and physically exhausted to get the "fun" stuff done.
I tend to procrastinate on things that are mentally and/or emotionally exhausting. Eg doing my income tax course work because it's way above my head, or sending an email to someone because my anxiety makes me worry that I'm going to say something that will upset them. I can't upset them if I don't send them anything, right? Honestly, my reward is simply having the thing that I have to do done so I don't have to think about it anymore. I procrastinate because I don't want to make a mistake and ruin things for myself in the future.
I needed to practice my english listening with two videos...This one I liked so much I didn't procrastinate, the next two I'm gonna leave for later on...hehe
6:00 is so relatable 😭😭 My desk is a mess but I have work to do so I’m like arghhhhh clean or nah? I like this power hour, it’s a good base for before I need to work. Love this video although I know everything about procrastination and what not to do. It’s like a wake up call for me because someone is telling me it almost like “scolding” me into realising I have work to do. If that make sense 😅
Feeling is All about 'Getting it done"' I find my highest procrastination period is the 3 week of the month. So interesting and I'm trying to combat or at least level out the flow
