hi richard hows it going ? I have a quick question , I am trying to make a music video with pictures flashing on the beat ... of course I can see the beat in the audio section but I cant move the image exactly right on the beat ...Is there anyway to turn off the time grid so I can put the picture right on beat? I was assuming it was a frame rate thing but I'm not sure... if you could help me with this question I would be much appreciated!!!!

when I drag the }ALE into the clip bin (with clips selected) it creates master clips, not subclips. Can't figure out why - any suggestions? thanks! Also, I don't know if you need the formula in all cases. I have clips V1A1A2A3A4A5 - I wanted to just keep V1A2 so I replaced all "V1A1A2A3A4A5" with "V1A2" - unless that's the reason the master clips are being created?

You have to go to your import settings, and the shot log tab and set that to "Merge Events with known Sources and automatically create Subclips". If you keep it in the default, "Maintain Events as Logged" it will create master clips.

What if you've been given audio and picture to sync and then you want to create mix only sub-clips from the sunc sub-clips? I tried the ALE method but I'm getting BIN_IMPORT_NO_MATCH error which makes me think that this only works for master files. Am I missing something?
@straycatds
@straycatds 2 года назад
If you're syncing clips in Avid, there's nothing to be gained by using an ALE to create mix only subclips, sync Autosync in Avid will create subclips. In that case, if you're syncing by timecode, you can select which audio tracks you want to carry along when you select the picture and sound master clips and hit auto sync. If you're syncing in the timeline, you can lineup the picture to the sound clips, then remove all tracks in the timeline except for the mix track, subsequence so that you only have a single picture track and the single sound mix track, then select that subsequence in hit AutoSync. It is true, whether you're merging data or using an ALE to create subclips, you have to first double check your import > shot log settings and you have to drag them onto master clips. You can reveal the master clips using the "Show Reference Clips" option. Make sure the master clips are selected first, then drag the ALE into the bin. BIN IMPORT NO MATCH means that you don't have matching data to merge. In order to successfully merge an ALE to a master clip it needs to have matching Tape, Start TC & End TC column. If you want to create subclips, Tape has to match and the timecode range has to fall within the Start and End TC values of the master clip.

Excellent Workflow. How to make an Editorial Codebook using Filemaker Pro? Could you please create a Video on this?

Hi Richard, thanks for the informative video. I'm looking into how to export ALEs from Filemaker. Do you know the best place to find out how to script this? Through research I've found it can be done with global container fields, but it's hard to find much information on this online.

There are a couple of a ways you can do it. My preferred way is to use the Create Data File, Open Data File, Write to Data file & Close Data File script steps. This is the cleanest way and allows you to easily create ALEs for different purposes per script. If you're on a version of Filemaker older than 18, you can create one calculation field to aggregate the fields you want to export, a summary field of that calculation to put together a list, and one last calculation field to create the header first, then insert the summary list. It's a messy way of working, but it works on older versions.

10:37 so what about 35mm projects where linking the reference stills by Tape name is not an option because the Tape name is the lab roll and is repeated across multiple clips and thus is not a unique identifier? Couldn’t we just save the stills using the clip name and then make the connection to the record using the clip name?
@RichardSanchezMTW
@RichardSanchezMTW 9 месяцев назад
You could do that. It all depends on your database and workflow. I typically work digital projects where each file has a unique tape name assigned by the camera, but in the case of lab rolls, you'd need a unique name to match to.
@ckavid6312
@ckavid6312 9 месяцев назад
@@RichardSanchezMTW lab rolls aren't unique (eg 15 clips share one labroll on day 29) so we went with clip names for jpegs and just made sure they were unique (numbering colour chart clips etc.)

Maybe your workflow only works with a Mac. I tried the exact same thing. I export an ALE and re-import with no modifications and I get new sub-clips with all the correct data. If I amend the ALE using the ALE editor you linked to and re-import the ALE I get the following error "An error occurred on event #1. An inconsistency exists between the stated timecode duration and the actual timecode duration. Skipping to next clip" Have you encountered this problem? I really want this to work as it would save a tonne of time on our workflow. I already have a slightly quicker way of doing this using hot-keys, but your method would reduce my method from 5-7 mins to 1 min.

Update on this message. I discovered this was happening when the ALE editor was adding extra frame handles to the .ALE file which was causing the previous error. I am now having a new error message which is "an error occurred on event#1 invalid or no tracks defined on the import file" And the odd thing is that this error message is only coming up on every other video file. So if I have 10 video clips then it's all the even files that are showing this error so it's like clips 2,4,6,8 and 10. Any idea why this might be occurring?

Final Update on my problem: Through reading up on this via Avid Forums I realised that in the past you could choose which columns to export and this is something you really cannot do as easily, but I decided to try a little experiment. I whittled my bin columns down to just name, tracks and video codec only. When I exported the ALE and uploaded to Shift-E tools I could see there were less columns in the ALE, but things like start and end were still there despite removing them from the BIN display. Long story short, I downloaded the new ALE and imported it and it worked a treat and I had no errors and my video tracks were reduced to V1 and A1. I did a little bit more experimenting. removing certain columns from bin display to see if it worked with certain columns and found that for it to work completely all I had to do was make sure the "Duration" column wasn't selected in my bin when exporting the ALE. After I discovered this I looked back on your video and noticed you didn't have the duration tab selected either so this seems to be a MUST for this process to work. TLDR: Remove Duration Column from your BIN display to ensure this process works and that you don't get errors.
