Time Stand Still
Music by Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson
Lyrics by Neil Peart
On January 7, 2020, the music industry lost a giant. Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist for the band RUSH, lost a three and and a half year battle with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. Neil will forever be one of the most influential rock drummers of all time. Over RUSH’s 40 year career, his drumming and thoughtful lyrics have been part of the soundtrack to millions of lives around the globe, and his passing has created a huge void.
When SFC Tim Whalen heard the news, he was shocked and saddened. As a lifelong RUSH fan, he felt compelled to do something to honor Neil and the band that has meant so much in his own life. He immediately knew the song “Time Stand Still” would be the perfect choice.
SFC Whalen relfects, "The lyrics to this song have always resonated deeply with me, and they show Neil’s heart. I wanted to showcase the deep humanity he had in his writing. The song is about life moving too fast, due to both things we can control and things we can’t, and the desire to hold onto something just a little longer. This is such a universal message, whether it be children growing up too fast, a loved one dying, or a soldier leaving home wondering if they’ll ever see their family again.”
Neil Peart
September 12, 1952 - January 7, 2020

Because there are no drums at all in this arrangement, the focus of this particular memorial performance turns to Neil Peart’s lyrics. The man deserves recognition as a great poet in his own right.

Without neil's drum I see/ hear this as a sort of "missing man formation". Paying respect to a lost team member. The focal shift to the lyrics is equally as chilling buy yet uplifting in content as recognizing the missing member.

From one Rush fan to another, I feel your pain and loss. I was an Infantryman in the US Army and served with your guys in Northern Germany back in the Evil Empire days. You guys are second to NONE. Then my 3 year old grandson says, "Grandad, why are you sad?". I said "you'll understand when you get older, when I introduce you to the music and lyrics of a band called Rush". I hope what I went thru to be able to watch this video you never have to experience. What this song means to you isn't what it means to me. For me it goes way deeper because of my experiences and memories. I know the Rush version of this song very well and with the emotion they used in the song it was a different meaning than the Armys meaning. I'm not going to explain exactly why it was so inspiring for me because that's for me only. If this song has no meaning for you then maybe you should start listening to what music is really about. I can't imagine what it's like to be soulless antonio. There's got to be nothing but a dull, colorless, numbing feeling inside you. @@applejaxx1613 you are wrong. its men that go to war, and die. of course women and children can become victims, unfortunately. but its men who die, get burned to death, dismembered way more often, and its been like that since the advent of recorded history. its mostly men who fight fires, who work construction under the August sun, who drill for oil and gas that people take for granted. the US army does not recklessly kill women and children. efforts are made to avoid civilian targets. its too bad extremists hide among the population in some countries, and allow otherwise innocent people to take the wrath of an attack.
@Chris-yj2di

@@jacksonmiller6679 That doesn't change the message of what he was saying. Men who serve are the greater losses throughout history. 25,000 people may have died in Dresden but 226,386 men were casualties during Operation Overlord. If you really feel that strongly about it, then do something about it. Leave the comfort of your own little world and go provide aid to those who are suffering. I'm not saying that as an insult or a hidden attack, I'm saying that would genuinely make the world a better place because what you are expressing is mercy towards people you see suffering. Go work that gift. RU-vid comments mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.

When you think about it, it makes total sense. The audition process to be in the army band is VERY INTENSIVE. I don't know what all it entails, but when I arrived at the 2nd infantry division replacement company at Camp Mobile in Korea 1997, one of the guys staying in our 8 man room was going to be in the 2nd ID band as a percussionist... One day I noticed he was listening to RUSH and immediately we got into a long RUSH discussion, as we were both HUGE fans. That was how we got to talking to each other, but because of the intense RUSH discussion, he didn't quite get around to telling me about band auditions, other than it was no joke and they don't just take anyone! With all that being said to describe the calibre of army musicians, you just KNOW peach and every one of them KNOW who RUSH is and what their music is all about. So with that example and the guy I met in Korea as an example, thyre all influenced by RUSH and I believe they feel they owe it to them for helping them get to where they are in the army band... that's what I think anyway

I just turned 49 and have heard this song for over 30 years. I had never felt words this strong. I'm a fire fighter and paramedic who has had PTSD for quite some time. I've made so many mistakes that have hurt those that I truly love, but am working hard to be better. I have stopped to smell the flowers, finally forgiven myself for my poor choices and am taking in life. This makes me think of how my kids are growing up, how much I love my wife, and live life as if it were my last. From a Navy man, who gives his Army brother a lot of grief for his branch of service choice...Army wins this one without question!

We got this, my brother!!! I've since found a great lady..sorry FIANCEE...to help me through this and share my life. She's now my ROCK! Army, Navy..all a brotherhood as well. Army was my deal before. In short, I say thumbs up to you and yours!! Be safe and love those you have. ...but I do gotta love your props to the Army for your brother... :-) It's all good!!!!

As an Army Veteran, and a RUSH fan since I first heard the band's music in 1974, I was both proud and touched by this tribute to Neil. He was unquestionably the greatest drummer/percussionist there has ever been; as well as being a fantastic lyricist. RUSH has been my favorite band since I first heard their music when I was stationed overseas; and that has never changed. I was very blessed to see them in concert many, many times. I won concert tickets from Pirate Radio on Thanksgiving morning in 1991 for the January 23, 1992, Roll the Bones tour concert at the LA Forum. During the pre-concert party I won a contest that included backstage passes and front/center seats. I actually got to meet, and talk with, Geddy and Alex while backstage. That night, meeting Geddy and Alex, and sitting front/center for that concert remains one of the highlights of my life. I still cannot believe Neil is gone and that I will never get to see RUSH live in concert again; but I will always listen to the music they created for us. I still can't watch this video without getting choked up because of the pride I feel seeing these soldiers do such a beautiful rendition of Time Stand Still; a song that has deep meaning for me as the lyrics truly describe my life. I spent way too much time working and trying to be successful and not nearly enough time enjoying life.

Being almost 19 years old, Rush has been an influence and a support to me throughout my entire life, thanks mainly to my dad. I still vividly remember the days back when I lived in Southern California, as a 4/5 year old kid, going to t-ball practice, listening to Vapor Trails, Test For Echo, and Counterparts through the CD player in the 2002 Toyota RAV4 that my dad was driving, that I now mainly drive, today. My dad and I have shared some of our best memories together at the 3 Rush concerts I was lucky enough to attend in my (compared to others) short exposure to Rush. I was never a great fan of this song... until today. At 50 years of age, and as a near life-long Rush fan, I have no qualms in proposing that these men’s arrangement has elevated this composition to the level of emotus maximus. I had never before felt the introspective sting of the lyric or the wide-eyed optimism of the underlying message. I suspect the dedication to Neil has something to do with it. But clearly, their interpretation simply nails the emotive sentiment that, at least for me, the original never did. Big, big kudos to all the personnel involved in this production.

I ordered it in August of 1987 and received it in October of 1987. The SuperStar line was totally discontinued on January 1st of 1988. I CHERISH My drums like my own children and STILL gig with them! I almost sold them a few desperate times in my life... but I am SO GLAD, ESPECIALLY NOW that I kept them! Neil's was My MENTOR and Main Inspiration and always will be!

60 times / WOW, awesome Earl. My old guitar player used to roommate with skip Gildersleeve, and when touring (working) with RUSH, and they rolled into town Skip would get my friend 11 tickets every time they rolled into tow. Indeed I'm crushed all over again. Here's a relived day in my home studio. www.youtube.com/watch?v=B38D alvPBeA

I'm sitting here contemplating things past and my life partner who passed coming up 4 years ago. She was a beautiful soul. I've been a Rush fan forever, knowing of them in their original form way back in the "70's before Neil Peart. Being aware of his devastating personal loss, today it finally dawned on me. This song is about dying and the experience as the soul becomes aware of the transition. Its beyond beautiful. That a living soul can find the words to convey. Such a gift to us all. Thank you Rush for putting it all together in a way we all want to hear, over and over and over again

I am a lifelong Rush fan. I love all Rush Music, but lean towards the heavier stuff. You gave me an entirely new appreciation for the power and sentiment of this song. Superbly done! From the bottom of my heart - Thank you! ...and a huge Thank You to each one of you for your service to this country.

I've been choking up rereading and listening to his lyrics since his passing. I love and play some of the darkest and most brutal music out there, but very, very few in my genre can touch his level. His words and his drumming are what every musician, no matter what genre, should view as the ideal.

I agree. It's kind of like the rearrangement of Resist on R30. I liked that a lot more than the original recording. In fact, Time Stand Still, is near the very bottom of Rush songs for me and this was the take that elevated it for me.

I'm not quite there yet, but I was able to hold them back until they showed the picture of Neil at the end. There's alot that makes Rush special, but aside from their unparalled talent, they were just 3 genuinely decent, kind, really nice human beings. Heck, Geddy and Alex are still married to their high school sweethearts.

I am 4th generation Navy. I'm Blue and Gold till I am called home. I'll razz my land locked brothers and sisters whenever there's a chance, as I know they will do to me. But credit where credit is due. Bravo Zulu brothers and sisters ! Damn well done. I'm a life long Rush fan. Neil's passing hit me very hard indeed. February 8th, 2016 I lost a cousin to the same type of tumor. Dana was also a professional drummer though he'd be the first to admit, not on the same level as The Professor. No one is on that level now. Prayers for Neil's family. After 40+ years Geddy and Alex weren't friends, they were indeed part of Neil's family. Thank you for the music of my life. Thank you to my brothers and sisters for this tribute. God Bless Doc G

A truly moving tribute to Neil. Judging by the number of people who say that they're crying, this rendition is clearly touching a lot of us for various reasons. It's 6 weeks tomorrow since Neil passed, but I'm still so, so saddened. His words captured the human condition so eloquently. Simply very sorry that you had to go, you're sorely missed.
