Had a quick callout to replace a time switch in central London. I also replaced some fire extinguishers in a communal block.

RU-vid suggested your video like two weeks ago. I was sick at the time and running out of stuff to watch. So I tought let’s give it a go. Now I have watched almoust all of your videos. So nice to see someone that knows what he is doing and gives a crap. And it’s fun to see how things are done in UK. I’m from Finland and im not even an electrician. But had to leave a comment. Keep up the good work!

Hey Tom, Accidentally found one of your videos and have now gone on to watch many more of them. I think you are both well presented and quite entertaining and informative....to the point you keep this non electrician (I am a photographer for my sins) interested in watching (and subscribed) your videos. Basically, keep up the good work old boy!

How much does it cost roughly to install a ceiling fan light fixture from a bog standard b22 light fitting? A couple of questions. 1) What is the min/max height specifications for mounting the fire extinguishers? 2) Since you mentioned that fire ext's get tampered with in common places, then why don't you/client install fire ext cabinets? I was surprised to hear you say that some places/business's either don't install or remove fire ext's because of public liability. Do you not have a national code mandating fire ext's must be present and in working order??

I was wondering why those timed switches don't exist at all in Germany and I think I deduced why: The way those are installed create a switches wire that will be connected to live at multiple points. Which creates so many error scenarios, e.g. people connecting it to lives from different breakers, people working on it after having disabled one switch and getting electrocuted etc. So it makes sense to me to make it code that every wire only ever has one point where it will be connected to live. And in case you're wondering: German standard for this setup is using momentary switches to engage a central timed relay.

230 v single phase 415v 3 phase

But there are usually 3 phases, so one house or flat will probably be on a different phase from the neighbouring house. But, yes, as Ian Stevens has said, generally a single phase per property. 3 phase tends to be for commercial/industrial use only.

Those time delay pneumatic light switches are absolute rubbish. The housing association I work for insist we use the because they're cheap but they don't really save them any money as we get so many callbacks on them. They tend to stick after a while and I find they're quite inconsistent, you'll push the button once and it'll stay in for about 2 minutes, you'll push it in again and it'll stay in for 30 seconds.

Tbh, most landlords I have done work for have converted their emergency lights to LED bulkheads and just leave them on 24/7. For what it costs in call outs and materials to replace the pneumatic switches, it was cheaper to pay the extra electricity at 3W per LED bulk head. love the videos btw.... nice seeing how the other half live/work....

So they are doing away with fire extinguishers in fear of being sued if someone was to use one to escape from a burning building and actually make it out alive. I guess it would be better for business if that person dies in the blaze so that way they can't sue? What a world we live in.

Interesting that you're still being asked to install/replace fire extinguishers in blocks of flats. Our local fire service no longer recommends their use, and I think a lot of London Boroughs are the same - the general advice is not to install them, because they're often not tested and people aren't properly trained in how to use them. They're also often used to prop open fire doors, which is amusingly ironic :)

Also not updating your phone puts your phone at risk of been compromised (assuming samsung just set it to update at 3am in the morning each day) and your way of thinking is why updates are not optional on google phones and they use a dual partition update so updating done in the background and does not take any longer then restarting your phone once The background update is done ,me pixel 2 phone owner (none of the updating app 20 of 346 taking 30 minuets rubbish )

Suppose we are at a better stage of fire proofing, early warning and safe exit routes now, than ever before. No need to be a superhero, and the volume one could safely manually handle is very very limited as to what can be done should the worst happen. The bubble wrap I love, that`s great until you leave the lamps on, and it melts to the fitting, unless they are LED of course. Used to get it all the time with masking tape around GU10 spotlights, leave them switched on while the decorations being done, and hey presto, cremated masking tape and adhesive baked onto the whole lot! Better checking when opening the van door please Thomas, lots of cyclists in London.

And now harmonisation within the EU means black is a live on new installations :) I don't get your point - we don't use white *at all*, and you do. If a house in Australia were wired in English colours, it would not be to standard and would risk confusing people and potentially dangerous. Similarly a house in England wired Australian colours would be confusing and therefore potentially dangerous. What Thomas is showing us is not sloppy, it's just we have a different way of doing things over here that are obviously completely different from the way you do things. It's like a Londoner walking into a shop in France and being surprised if nobody speaks Italian.

Keep a hammer by the bed in case of burglary and that is an illegal weapon. A small fire extinguisher is reasonable. Blast the burglar in the face and then hit them with the extinguisher. Tell the police that the noise sounded like a fire, so you took the extinguisher to investigate. Job done. I have had a fire and it does sound like someone breaking in.
