@@SNP-1999 In my line of work I coach people in conversation and public speaking. It makes me hyper-aware of what I call "verbal ticks". I can assure our Canadian friend above that Doug and Bob are not the source of some myth; MANY (not all as I said) Canadians do end every sentence with "eh?". In fact, I have encountered this from Canadians from Moscow to Mali. When spending long periods of time with them, I find myself doing it and hope they don't think I am mocking them; I just can't help it. That never happened when living in the UK (general slang but not dialects as far as I am aware), mostly because there are so many different accents/dialects that you never really hear a particular one often enough to mimic it.

It was a set up, in my opinion. Bill Oddie is a famous comedian, writer, singer, naturalist, environmentalist, etc. First, Oddie pops a squat in the dig, then Phil leaves this rank amateur to his own devices, then the amateur finds and yanks a valuable item out of the dirt wall. Oddie could write such a string of gags and Phil might agree to be the straight man, for a pint.

It wasn't. At the start you see the farmer's drawing. Earlier farmers / sheep herders have also noticed the lines over the centuries but until the last century were just not interested in digging it up

Old pewter is toxic because of the lead content. Recent pewter has some other mix of metals.

As with the other Roman site, Carenza got so excited she forgot they were doing a television show. Tony had to sternly remind everyone, "one at a time" because they started talking all together.

Phil is my favorite to watch & he is best when digging. Love Mick, not sure how he tolerated Carenza acting like the boss of everything though, Love Stewart & John too! Tony asks the obvious for us and of course Carenza answers at nauseum as if she is the only one there smart enough to know. Helen is so much easier to watch.

I've seen her talk over a ninety-year-old guest, interrupt Robin Bush repeatedly while he's reading aloud from an ancient book, and has an annoying habit of echoing the experts whilst they are trying to speak. She gets plenty of airtime and the interruptions are not necessary. If Phil can wait his turn, or cut himself off in mid-speech to let Mick speak, so can she.

The reason I knew about that American pewter manufacturer was because I happened to live somewhere near the factory and showroom. The company *really* pushed the 'ol "handcrafted quality" shtick, because the pieces were sand-mould castings ... done by most probably rather short-lived craftsmen whose lung X-rays must have showed pure white lung-shaped silhouettes. I'm a social psychologist, art therapist and fine artist-- so I've been motivated to do my homework re: anything toxic I get on my hands and/or breathe ... and the only really dangerous material I occasionally used was lead oxide white oil paint. The lead will go right through your skin. Lead oxide's pure, non-yellowing and cheaply produced whiteness has a really horrifying historical track record. Two lowlights: 1) Lead white used as "clown white" theatrical makeup. Imagine being iced with that heavily lead-based greasepaint, and working up the sweat caused by a clown's routinely physically strenuous performance. Cases in point: The reknowned stage clowns of the Italian Commedia della Arte period. They became legendary for their increasingly brilliant performances over some years, and consistently tragic deaths at relatively young ages. Many of them went hopelessly insane years before they died; the opera *PAGLIACCI* precisely chronicles a creative retelling of an actual historical case history. Lead poisoning wasn't recognised as the cause of lead's pretty consistent physical and mental double-deterioration downwards spiral. 2) Lead-based housepaint chips ingested by toddlers-- they taste somewhat sweet. Older house restorations must take extreme precautions when power-sanding off old paint layers; lead paint dust is extremely toxic when inhaled, and deposited in the moist lung linings. Here's the capper: even when finally recognised as dangerously toxic to the touch, lead oxide's seductively pure, creamy white resulted in one of the most bizarre pieces of ladies' cosmetics history. During the late 1880"s, many Victorian women consistently used a combination face cream / light makeup called "Youth Dew". Lead oxide, oils and perfume in a fancy bottle. "Youth Dew's" covert popularity was due to the routine symptomology of gradual and uninterrupted weight loss, and the initial not-unpleasant slight numbing of the extremities in tandem with a somewhat tranquilising interference with, and gradual reduction of, normal brain function. "Youth Dew's" pure, creamy white also gave women of that era the fashionably "pale and interesting" look. Their eyes would apparently appear to become larger and more luminous-- due to tissue damage and shrinkage around the eyeball orbits, and gradually increasing permanent pupil dilation. It was only after a number of women wasted away and died that "Youth Dew" was very publicly and permanently banned. And here's the "punch line": remaining stocks of Youth Dew literally flew off the shelves as the supply warehouses were quickly emptied. "Fashion Victims" as diabolical irony. So, *no*, Jamie. You weren't losing *your* mind ;)

we recently did the family tree thing and we had a relative living in scunthorpe england in the 1800s and we got her diary from 34 to 68 when she died,she was kind of a fine hand artist,who states were she worked at a watch factory when she retired the next two oldest workers didnt add up to her age because they all died,she claims it was bcoz she never licked the[could understand word]but we guess she meant brush to get the wink,once again we guess this means the point on the brush instead shed roll it in the v of her fingers,qoute,i warned the younger lassys but none took heed,except lil gwen who went on and outlived them all. we did a search and this was proven to be the case and banned in 1934,some 50 years after the first surgeons warnings

Jamie, that business of licking the fine brush-tip to "point" it for painting the finest and most accurate line is *exactly* the same lethal procedure forced upon teenage American girls who were employed by the *Westclox* company. These unsuspecting young girls were hired to paint radium on watch and clock hands and dials, and required to lick / re-point their brush after each and every dip into the lethal radium paint. There's an absolutely appalling docu about it on RU-vid. These girls were lured into and kept in employment by being paid relatively very generous wages during the American Great Depression. Westclox was well aware that the girls were consistently becoming sickened to the point of incapacity to work, and *death.* Westclox therefore moved its radium dial painting facility across state lines 3 times in an attempt to "outrun the problem". The girls died horrifying deaths of massive tumours that typically dissolved their jawbones and surrounding tissues, among other serious health issues such as major organ failures. Long story short, nothing was ever done to prosecute Westclox, nor compensate the handful of totally disabled survivors in any way whatsoever. One of the affected girl's bodies was exhumed for forensic examination years after her death, and was determined to be horrifically radioactive. Lead remains and is detectable in the body long after death, too. My heart goes out to you and your family, Jamie. Only natural rage, disgust and loathing is due to these corporate mass murderers, aided and abetted by governmentally masked administrative evil.

+Thomas Cervasio for those unaware .Peter is still in use for plates etc, but there are differing types of pewter by the 1600's pewter was graded into atleast three grades of which plates and tureens etc were the highest they do however require special treatment when washing up or your finger prints get etched into the plate.....

It wasn't completely filling because of trapped air. Molds like that normally have extra little vents cut into them, that push the air out as it's being filled. I'm surprised none of them knew that tbh! Shame as even the final one wasn't fully filled :(

When you are going to be around muddy trenches and dirt being fling around you don't want to wear anything that you don't want to get ruined. Archaeology is dirty work and you don't wear a three piece suit for that.

He is as bad as Toxic Sandi Toksvig on the live broadcasts. I assume these "guests" were Tim Taylor's idea. When Time Team first started they received a lot of criticism about treating archaeology like a joke with the fake drama of the three day deadline. Many experts stayed away from taking part. But Mick, Phil, Carenza and the other archaeologists involved insisted on following proper procedures and practices. Slowly the show gained the respect of the community of archaeologists and other experts. It was viewed as helping increase the public's interest in archaeology and therefore increasing the available funding for more field work.

My guess is Bill Oddie and Tony worked up this stunt. Oddie wanted a cameo and was willing to be the butt of all the archaeology jokes. Maybe even wrote them himself, with Phil and Tony as the straight men. After all, Oddie is a comedian.
