Phil Harding's archaeological instincts are proven astute time and time again . Such a happy-go-lucky guy ! And yet so wonderfully capable and reliable !

Hey ! Mick is back! Time Team is nothing without him. And nor did it ever regain it's integrity after he left . May you rest in peace Mick. You gave so much of your knowledge and expertise to us ignorant but thirsty masses.

The wire coil wasn't disappointing for John. He located a metal object. That's his role. The nature of the find is way beyond his control.

Time Team is a great show! I never have to look for a special episode since they're all special. Each ep has its own story to tell and they always keep it interesting! I'm a lifelong fan!

Interesting that Jimmy Adcock again gets the highest geophys credit in the rollup. He also got it a few episodes ago, which I thought was a caught mistake because John Gater was back on top again for the next episode. Early days, Chris Gaffney was getting the first credit. Then John took it over for years.

And in this episode, in another TT first, a bloke dead for 1,500 years has his pint swiped by Phil.

Everyone seems to forget that for a few seasons now Kerry Ely has dug right by Phil's side and does so much more. The man is always working or pitching in. I wish I had commented on him before so we would watch his work ethic more. But Matt was in the last 2 episodes so I guess I will watch his work progress & Helen Again!!!!! Yippee Helen

I love this show. Thank you so much for posting these videos. I do wish that they had more than 3 days to excavate, especially on a site like this one which was so rich in finds. I'm sure there are still a lot of things to be found in that field. Pity so much has already been lost to ploughing.

So what happens to a site like this? Do they preserve it or just keep dragging a plough over it till it's all gone?

I have always wondered why there isn't a vehicular geophysical array (say 10 devices) so they can cover a lot more ground more quickly.

With the last pic imagining the barro and graves, the barro reminded me of the shield with the mound as the shield boss. I wondered, does anyone know the history of that type of shield?

I'd love to see a 2-3h documentary where they excavate the rest of this site and lift all the burials and grave goods. Not only would it be fascinating but that'll be the only way to preserve them what with all the plowing going on. It amazes me that anyone can choose to be a farmer in Britain given all the history of the islands. Every time you sink your plow into the soil there's a very good chance you're destroying archaeology.

They were wrong about the function of a shield boss. It's main role is to protect the hand that's holding the shield. The axe test showed the exact reason for the need to protect your hand by a steel boss. Then the pin on the top of the boss is not for catching and breaking swords, it's too small for that. Swords of the time were wide blades with little edge taper google image search migration era swords, the disc on the end of the boss is too small to hold a blade and be able to break one. The blade would twist right off the pin. But the pin is perfect for catching the edge of your opponents shield to push it out of the way in a bind. If you and your opponent are pressing shields together you can use the pin to control their shield, move it enough to make an opening for your sword. Later shields just have a round boss without the pin, they are without because they are very situational and can also be used against you by the opponent intentionally putting his shield edge against the pin and creating an opening. Binding shields together in combat is not a common tactic because it limits what you can do, like use the shield to stop an incoming attack. So rarely done and the pin can be used against you just as much as used by you? Better off without them. Also the shields were much thinner at the edge and thicker around the boss like 1/8th of an inch edge and 1/2 center. They also used very thin sheets of rawhide rather than thick leather. The edge cover was also thin rawhide. They were thin like that to get blades stuck into the shield rather than simply stop them. If your blade is stuck in your opponents shield you have no weapon anymore. Thin edge makes a sword blade hitting the edge sink deeply into the shield and cannot be extracted in the heat of combat, that's why they are thin and have very little covering them. You want your opponents blade stuck deep into the edge of your shield because it is better stuck there than in you.

Finding feet is significant: apparently different populations (e.g. Celts, Romans, Saxons) have distinctively different shaped feet.

I wish these people would get over the fact that not all these ancient peoples were midgets. Or that all warriors were male. Female warrior also didn't always come in as second line fighters either. They were known to be 6'+ be they Celts types or saxon/germanic types. The "midgets" were the Romans.

They comment at the end how the Anglo-Saxons must have looked at the barrow with wonder. Is that the case? Were similar barrows found in Europe at the same period, or were they peculiar to Britain?

The metal detectorist's failure to mark the grave, plus his obvious defensiveness about it, tells me he's nothing more than a common treasure hunter.

I had several thoughts after this episode. First, that actual Anglo-Saxon settlers coming from mainland Europe would hardly have been unused to seeing large prehistoric monuments and borrows in the landscape, but may have brought their culture of respecting those monuments with them. Nor would any of the native people who had always been there. Second, that it seems clear from this episode and others on Anglo-Saxon burials that there definitely was, at least until the advent of Christianity, a cultural norm for females to have status and be warriors.

Probably said before, but the guy with the large beaker could have been the brewer or potter rather than a drunkard, i.e. important and respected rather than laughed at. On the other hand, up until quite recently, I believe it was the older women that did the brewing (though I'm not sure).

Not enough time. That's why just a bit earlier (White Queen, I think.), I asked about rigging a small plane or helicopter with Geo Phys equipment. Could cover so much more land.

I bet you'd find that there were tribes during the Saxon period that had warrior women and others that didn't. And the tribe that used this cemetery did have warrior women.

Why can't henges (1) not be a household, (2) a livestock barn and paddock, (3) a religious site, (4) a burial/cremation sacred site, (5) a military fort, (6) an industrial kiln/woodworking/metal working et al site, ..... In the Norse Sagas, they talk about the annual gathering of the tribes, just like a State Fair, and all issues, legal, criminal, and martial were held at some special site, available for a large number of temporary campers. Why can't Stonehenge and other non-artifact henges be althings ?

The average Anglo-Saxon woman was about 5 ft. 3 inches. A 6 foot woman would have been extremely tall, and extremely rare. It was a foolish guess, and a professional should have known better.
