Time Team S19-E07 The Only Earl Is Essex

Property magnate Paul Whight has two very expensive hobbies. He collects and drives classic racing cars, which he keeps in the grounds of his second obsession - his beautiful stately home and garden in Essex.
Paul is so keen to know everything he can about the history of his home that he's rashly invited Tony Robinson and Time Team in to do their worst.
The site used to be owned by one of the nation's foremost families, the De Veres, who were better known as the Earls of Oxford.
In the twelfth century they founded a grand priory somewhere on this site, and centuries later they may well have built themselves a fine country house.
What's more, the most famous and dissolute Earl of Oxford - who some believe wrote Shakespeare's plays - might even be buried here.
The Team rip up Paul's pristine lawns and subject his house to merciless scrutiny, gradually conjuring up the ghosts of the De Vere family.

I used to work with a heavy machine operator that could open a beer bottle with the bucket on his excavator. I'd be willing to bet that Ed could do the same. It takes an inordinate level of coordination and dexterity to work a machine as smoothly as he does.

There's no reply button to Greg Barnes so I'm fairly certain that he won't see this, but Time Team has always written up their finds and continued the research past filming. In fact, there apparently are only five as of yet unpublished sites from all the Time Team excavations - which is an incredible feat unto itself. They've done incredible research and publication off camera from everything which they've done and have actually earned the grudging respect from many archaeologists who would hitherto grumble about their methods. I'm not sure about the status of this find, but I'm fairly certain it follows in the same footsteps of scholarly aptitude as all their others. :)

This episode had some of the camaraderie of the early seasons. It shows that the new time might possibly have gelled if the producers hadn't kept messing with the show. Incidentally, with the teasing about Phil's clothing, I went back and looked -- Mick's stripey jumpers began episode 1 of season 2, though that one was more muted than this one.

THANKS SO MUCH for putting these up.. excellent. I have been watching some episodes of series 1 & 2 & 4 , but this series 19.. good grief what a change, in the first ten minutes, that presenter (don't know why she's there ?) being driven around in a sports car, and then background' rock music'.. did Channel 4 tell them they had to 'sex' it up?.. it JUST did NOT need this style of produced TV so everywhere now. Except that loved the episode..but; no Victor, no Helen, no Carenza.. what happened to them ? I love the experts.

@granthurlburt4062 2 года назад
@@wbrewer5352 The show died after the changes. Had 20 million viewers in 2006 at its height and still 1.1 million in season 18. The production was moved to Cardiff for season 19, in a political gesture aimed at building up regional television, Time Team was picked because it seemed a safe pair of hands. Jim describes this miscalculation as a ‘death blow’, which cost the show almost all of its behind the scenes staff. Expertise honed over 15 years was lost at a stroke, to be replaced by crew and production staff who knew neither each other nor archaeology.. " A number of archaeological old hands were sacrificed in favour of more youthful presenters. Disgusted, Mick walked out, explaining later ‘For some reason they didn’t think “oh, we’d better run that past Mick.” He’s the archaeological consultant, he might have an opinion about that’ (see CA 271). The changes proved too much, too fast, and viewing figures crashed to 700,000. "

They should have gone back to basics instead of trying to jazz it up, and focus more on the local archaeology that people wrote in about.

Then came a time when all the parts originally used to build it had been replaced, although the ship itself retained exactly its original form. Thinking about this situation (the ship was completely replaced, but at the same time the ship remained Teseo's ship), the question that can be asked is: is Teseo's ship preserved or not? That is: is the entity (the ship), modified in substance but without variations in form, still the same entity? Or is it just like her? This question can easily be applied to countless other cases; for example to the scrupulous preservation of some ancient Japanese temples (also mainly made of wood, like the ship of Theseus), for which one can ask whether they are still original temples. One can also turn the paradox about the identity of our own person, which changes widely over the years, both in the substance that makes it up and in its form, but despite this it seems to remain that same person." big hug

Well, shirts. For most ppl they grow older and bigger but I have clothes from the 80s that I can still wear. Then came time to leave the office stting yet have all these suitable clothes not past their prime. What I found was that on my dress shirts they were billowy enuf that if i sewed up the front to the first or second button i cud use them as night shirts, just n case i have 2 exit the house wearing what i wore in bed. Then friends who had grown in age and size and cud not do the same with their dress shirts gave them to me so I haven even more billowy nightshirt. A torn shirt? That fabric looks like a well worn blend of cotton and polyester. I stick 2 the 100 % cotton. He shud make that shirt n2 house rags rather than landfill dregs.

The researchers must have known from the beginning that Edward was not buried there. It would have been a much better episode without all the De Vere/Shakespeare stuff. Makes me wonder if they were hoping to sell the newly Americanized series on to the US market.

Actually, there are no known paintings of the Bard. Any pictures you see are later guesses. At least, that's what I remember from my literature classes.
@inapickle806
@inapickle806 9 лет назад
Gerald Costlow They're not exactly later guesses- though they're not exactly paintings either. The engraving that was done for the first folio was likely done from a painting and Ben Jonson, who personally knew Shakespeare, said that it was a good likeness, so we can assume it's reflects pretty much what he looked like. The monument in the church at Stratford upon Avon was also done after death and the original paint which gave detail was removed at one time and then replaced, can also be assumed to be a pretty good likeness as his family would have commissioned that. Most likely, at least one of the portraits floating around that claim to be him, are indeed him.

Not often I'm mad at Time Team, but this whole presentation of the half-assed (and basically just classist nonsense) notion that Shakespeare wasn't just Shakespeare is bullshit. The entire idea is easily debunked half-assery, and I'm surprised they even brought it up. Maybe they just wanted to assuage the views of the land-owner, but it's very very obviously balls if you do any research. I 100% do not understand how all the academics weren't constantly just saying "no" to the Shakespeare stuff. Even those pictures of the two were completely different.

There's enough conservative romantic in me to be saddened how a noble family like the De Veres can pass into irrelevance sufficient that their burial sites are obliterated. Now their very bones are exposed and moved about in trays of "archeology." The Christian beliefs they held in life are disregarded by such treatment. The rich homeowner might have been content to place a group memorial to all the unknown De Veres buried beneath his lawn, and left the lot in peace.
@jeffreycraven8154
@jeffreycraven8154 5 лет назад
I'm Christian and mostly of Brit heritage. To think Christians are being dug up like they were nothing more than apes; that's not archaeology but pure cold desecration. From 10 yrs. of age until when I was on my way to be an archaeologist (specializing in the medieval age) in college, I completely changed my major after learning that Christians were being dug up. To Think: These long dead awaiting the 2nd coming, or spirits coming back with the Lord to be united with their reconstituted bodies. Disturbing Christian graves sickens me.
@MelissaThompson432
@MelissaThompson432 5 лет назад
In Season 18 Ep. 06, they dig in a church cemetery in which church cemetery custodians in centuries past had dug up Christian graves and reburied them in what Helen called a "charnel pit." The church quite obviously thought it was okay.... Many Christian churches of many denominations worldwide have customs of moving remains, whether disinterred or never interred to begin with.... TT specifically, and archaeologists in general, are remarkably respectful of human remains; see the episode referenced above. I have seen remains tested in order that they might be returned to an appropriate place and reinterred or otherwise put to rest in a fitting manner. I haven't seen disrespect, except in the comments section.

@Jeffrey Craven Don't be foolish, bones will deteriorate into nothing in the ground if given a long enough period of time. You surely don't think the bones of Abraham, Moses, Jacob and all the other people of the Bible have not turned to dust by now.
