@@SailingMagicCarpet Funny thing, I always catch a finger in ours, last time was yesterday. It is a soft edge anyway. I tested the power use because I put new lights in. The Caframo uses so little power it hardly registers. We only have three but could fit more.

Those bronze cockpit drains with the balls - often on older boats that sit low in the waterwith the leeward cockpit drains will be below sea level when heeled over. So when this happens, the ball rises up in the drain and seals the water from coming into the the cockpit. The drain hoses from these drain should be cross led so the starboard hose goes to the port thruhull and visa versa.

I did wonder about keeping water out of a capsized cockpit. Ours are glassed tubes, but I wish we had balls in them because a passing wave usually makes water come up the drain.

With crossed drains these balls are superfluous. Besides they greatly reduce the outflow which can be serious when pooped. A tip (maybe off topic): If wintering and the water freezes, these pipes can burst. I used to insert Willow twigs which are compressible.

It's always good to have a plan B, just in case. You know, what do we do if things fall apart? I would suggest that you store all of your new appliances that you are not going to install this season back at your parents house instead of storing it there. And anything else that is just going to take up space there. That way Visa problems won't apply. I'm sure that you already have a plan B. If not, at least write something down to reference later. You both are very intelligent and I am probably just preaching to the choir . But I have been watching your videos for so long now that I genuinely care about your future happiness. And want the very best for you guys.

When using a plug to mold a hole, wrap with nylon string or rope. Depending on clearance desired. Wrap it tight together and finish with the string or rope at the top. Then cover with tape or wax paper. Once your lay up is cured, pull the string out. Then you can pull your plug easily.

Glad things are progressing. Have you thought of putting a couple of dingy supports on the cabin top to stabilize it when it's on the boat? That would support it when strapped down and give you a guide to put it in the "best" position every time.

Its probably too late by the time you read this but it seemed like a good idea to me. Before glassing the cabin top why not build up a slightly raised strip that forms a base prior to attaching the wood hatch surround. It could be a 1/2 inch that would be glassed in as part of the cabin top on the surface only in that small area that would be the mounting point for the wood. That way rather than the water on the flat deck tending to run under the wood (as apparently happened before) there would be more of a chance the water would shed and not seek to penetrate the seam.

I’m so impressed by your work! Both the filming and commenting and and the way you solve your challenges. And Aladino, I do really understand your struggle when you cannot do everything just perfect but looking at what you have achieved it it amazing! I guess that many of us would like to have someone with your knowledge and experience to ask for advice when encountering different challenges we may face in less difficult “refits”. You are a true master! And, as someone else wrote, you have given me many good ideas on how to solve challenges I have had and will have. Thank you for that. So, now Kirsten has won the GGR. That's a huge testament to the seaworthiness of the Cape George design, so we need to congratulate you for such a wise purchase as well as Kirsten (we need to give a bit of credit to Kirsten. I'm only kidding, of course. She. not only won the race, she also took a long side trip to rescue another contestant whose boat had sunk. So Kirsten and Cape George yachts are now legendary. Sorry Aladino, but the ball in the drain valve isn't there to close it if you capsize the boat, it's to prevent water from entering in the swell. In other words: water can only run OUT of the cockpit and not enter from below. The valves thus act as a one-way valve since the ball will float up and thereby close the valve. A very imaginative construction that you should definitely get!

Mya, speaking as someone who has a history of back problems starting from the age of 18, please take care of that back. I used to blow it off when I was younger because I could recover in a day or two, but now that I'm approaching 50, it can take anywhere from 3 to 7 days for me to even be able to walk any appreciable distance, and can take months to fully recover.I attribute this to my earlier nonchalance about the problem. If I had begun serious physical therapy at an earlier age, I could have avoided the vast majority (all?) of these problems.

That repair looks succificant to me, I can't see it being a problem down the road, don't be so hard on yourself there Alidino, I think your ocd is kicking in and trying to make you feel as though this dutchman repair, isn't up to bar, I think it's fine. Once its faired and fiberglassed correctly it should be good to go.

If that is the planned storage location for the dinghy, you really ought to be able to design some supports to hold it steady there and glass them into the top of the deck now before painting it. Make it look like it was an original part of the boat. Any motion (as you well know) will cause wear, and eventually wear gets through the fiberglass and lets water in.

The ball in the cockpit floor drain should float so it will not close the hole when capsizing. It should however prevent water from rising up when healing by making the drain "one way".

Less grill means a quieter fan. The grill puts resistance to air flow in the path so it adds noise to the operation of the fan. Good choice.

Love seeing the extra parts of the boat come together! These may not be as flashy as painting large areas, redoing whole sections, or ripping out bulkheads, but these little repairs still keep the project going. Funnily enough, I did some work in my Club’s boatshop last week, and suddenly both of the sailing RU-vidrs I watch (You and Florence) upload repair videos. Granted, you guys normally have been uploading refit videos, but it still felt a little bit intertwined. Fair winds, and can’t wait to see MC once the paint comes in! -J

When removing things like those hatches I have a long history of slipping really thin putty knifes into gaps like those you cut with the recuperating tool and then wedging them apart. Sipping in the putty knife and the wedging them apart usually involves driving another putty knife in between.

Hi Aledino, the balls in the cockpit drains are primarily meant to prevent the cockpit from flooding by following waves. This happens a lot when the cockpit floor is just a small distance above the waterline. Quite annoying to have a wet floor at all times when sailing. Inflow of water into the cockpit when capsized is least of your problems since gravity will drain that through the open top!

I just wanted to acknowledge how tough this job is, and give you and Dino kudos along with virtual hugs. 💜 Like any remodel, it can suck you dry emotionally and physically. It wasn't a pretty repair, but it looked very sturdy. The thing to remember is that it won't show once it is fiberglassed and painted. You also have the peace of mind of knowing the crack will not cause you any more concern.

I have those fans for our boat. You should also take a look at Vornado energy smart fans. They are AC-powered fans (although the energy smart actually convert to 24v, so it might be hackable) and move a max 1000cfm of air for a max 40w consumption. We keep these for hot nights and run them all night pretty easily on our house batteries. I plan to take one apart to see if I can hack it to run off 12v with a step-up to 24v. Our boat has a bus bar that centralizes all the cabin fan runs, so we could buy a single 12v to 24v step up and not have to change any wiring if we ever went that route. And since 24v can move more current through the same awg wire, won't have to worry about doubling the wattage of the fans.

BTW as an ex Navy sailor we always added "Azure Blue" to our white paints. White paint inevitably goes to a cream colour as it ages, Azure Blue tint only just makes the White just notably bluish and as it ages goes white and as expected the older the paint will go to cream colour, regards.

I don't want to be Captain Obvious, but turn the dinghy 180 degrees with the bow between the dorads and the stern resting solidly on the foredeck. You'll be able to move the dinghy back at least a foot, and the shearline will sit more closely to the hull. If you play your cards right, you'll have five solid contact points, less windage, better cockpit visibility, and better protection for the cabin top. I could be all wrong, but that sure looked like something worth trying.

You can get non-snap-off blades for sliding blade type knives, with things like lifting those hatch frames they are very good for slicing through sealant once you get the 1st part lifted slightly, lots of light strokes and change the blade often ( or sharpen if so inclined, it's a trade off of time to do it vs. cost of blades)

You may already be aware of the GGR around the world non stop single handed race, but a Cape George 36 cutter sailed by South African,Kirsten Neuschafer is leading the event with about 100 miles remaining to the finish line in France.

Not certain if you were aware, but another Cape George 36 is now heading into port at les Sables d'Olonne, France as part of the Golden Globe Race - skippered by Kirsten Neuschafer. Around the world solo circumnavigation. The boat has held up well. So will yours!

Great inspiration, just did my first dutchmen. certainly I did a crappy job, but it will work and I did not have to rip apart the entire door frame. Thanks for the inspiration : )

I have seen more than one owner demonstrate finger stopping this fan. Press onward, and an ok from him is better than many professionals work. Slightly envious, you won't have topside leaks on launch.
