Yoou can sow a crop like beans as refuge crop for bugs. Beans are one of the best. As apaying beneficial crop there is is a species of bean that you can grow the only pods three foot and taller. They have a good yield and a very strong tap root.

The farm is looking fantastic, the drone vision is amazing. I have never seen cotton planted and grown so it will be great to follow. It is very green about the sheds, you must have had some good rain! Very nostalgic for me, this is where I grew up!

Skip row! That’s what we do in west Texas. Two in one out. Well we used to, now we plant solid but with low plant population. If you plant the boll guard and RR you don’t have to do the refuge. You sew small grains and plant cotton. Ewwww I don’t like how hard you had to scrape to get at the seed,,,, cotton doesn’t like crust it will break its neck trying to emerge. It also doesn’t like hard packed ground where the roots have a hard time going down.

All cotton in Oz is usually picked. Skip row is a dryland technique, there are questions whether it is the most efficient but farmers use it. Does a 2 m or 6 ft space store more extra moisture in the soil for the cotton to use over a 1 m or 3 ft row. Weed control has to be very good for skip row, hence rup ready. Refuge crops are used to reduce potential pesticide résistance in insect. We have two helicoverpa species, formerly known as heliothis, one of which, heliocoverpa armigera can rapidly develop resistance to any pesticide we throw at it. Some varieties have been genetically engineered and bred with the Bt gene to help control this species and there may be more genes since I worked in the field. We also have very strong guidelines on the types of insecticides used at different times of the year, all aimed to reduce H. armigera. These procedures are strongly followed by all growers in the area. H. armigera also pupates and survives winters in the soil, so cultivation is done to destroy as many of these larvae as possible. The other species H. punctigera is also present and mainly attacks our legume and oilseed crops early in the season.

What is the reason for cotton this summer. Were these paddocks that you didn't sow in winter due to no rain? Can you turn around and get a winter crop after this in these paddocks?

I thought cotton required lots of water. Do you have irrigation orbhope for rain?

For size of cotton seed would have thought you’d have been bigger seed hopper on planter or was the ones you found already planted very swollen from moisture pick up ?

I couldn’t get over the tiny little seed bins on that cotton planter and the big gaps between the rows. Then again I have never been involved in cotton so it’s all new to me. Can’t wait to see it grow and be harvested. Good drone vision as usual, Matt

Talcum powder has gems in it and it's from volcanoes. It's a good thing for stars and cotton.

Matt how much tain did you get? First part you said you had to beat the rain getting the caravan.

Talcum powder is definitely a good lubricant. I used it on all the tubed tyre's, strangely enough after 20 years I heard that it's toxic to humans lungs. But then again the blue asbestos from the old truck's and car's, was far more dangerous, as the dust of the brakes would cover more and breathing it in. Oh bugger.

I know cotton likes a lot of water, will it leaves you short of moisture in the ground for your winter crop ?

Howdy Matt, Brad, Phil, when i was just a lad (14 yrs old) growing up now i'm (48) I used to help work the fields where I grew up with the land owners and friends that grew and we grew Cotton dang near every year granted we rotated out the fields and such but there was always cotton being growed. We grew it on 20 inch rows with a population of about 30k to 40k (30 to 40 thousand seed count population acer) maybe a little more. We used to have thermite cans / containers around the fields that drew in the insects and bugs that would harm the crop and the containers would catch all the weevils (bow weevils) that would destroy the crop if not caught. There's alot of different things that you can do to prevent insects from attacking the crop just got to know what one is ther to fight against. The Bow Weevil is the main one that will destroy your crop in a heartbeat they attack the plant then attack the pod and then you lose all the fiber out of the bowl. I'm from the South from my Home State of Georgia in the USA and we have fought them there insects for as long as i can remember. I don't know if y'all have them there in Ausie but keep a eye out for them cause they will destroy your crop if ya aint care full. Just as a matter of interest Matt. Your brother Brad was saying you using talcom powder as a lubricant for the seeds and you used to use graphite before that. Do you know if these compounds build up in the soil and are then taken up by the next crop you plant. The reason I ask is that both of those compounds as far as I know are carcinogenic. Singulation is the word you’re looking for Matt. Corn soybean and cotton love it. They call it seed singulation because the seed plate in the metering unit metered out perfectly placed seeds providing an excellent seed stand.

ive never seen a cotton seeder before.... it looks pathetic! its 10m wide? no fert down those tubes? that looks bizzare coming from cereal, canola, lentils, vetch, lupin peas etc...

What chemicals did you spray the ground parquet dichloride roundup etc.
