Just bought the videos . Broke even on the first repair not to mention the time saved dropping off my 2019 at the shop. Front and rear brake pad replacements. The videos are thorough , easy to follow and it's comforting to know that the job I did was done correctly and safe.

The caliper bolts are not stretch to fit. Honda recommends replacing them only because they have threadlock on the new bolts. Just thread lock the old ones and your fine
@rooster3019
@rooster3019 2 года назад
BUT, the type of thread lock is not the anerobic "locktite". There is a type ttat you apply to bolt and let air dry for 15 minutes and then tighten, looks just like OE.

I just did this last week. I used the old pads to push all the pistons back so I wouldn't ding up the new pads. My inside pads were waaaay more worn than the outside pads.

Isn't it a little silly to insert new plates without throwing up the clips all the way back
@robb3652
@robb3652 2 года назад
Try a thin wall C-clamp to reach over the caliper inside and outside walls to push the pucks back in.

A huge contributing factor to the Uneven pad wear comes from the fact the Calipers are of the non floating type as used on the last model Goldwings my 2012 did 55'000Ks on a set of front pads and NO sign of uneven wear at all and i rode that like a sports bike :) :) :)

Another reason why I'm still happy with my 2016 f6b! Having to remove the entire caliper? Replace bolts? Good gracious! I like loosening bolts popping pads out and put new ones in end of story on the pre-18 models! But as usual great instructive video!

I went to buy the caliper bolts from the Honda Dealer and he said they never stock them because the techs in the back service area never ask for them. SO your right on your bet.

When using a torque wrench, you should hold the wrench by the handle, not mid way like you did in this video. I use a technique called counter torque, hold the head of the wrench in one hand and the handle in the other and push/pull in opposite directions to apply an accurate torque.

Rest assured if Honda recommends that the bolts be replaced I will. Thanks for the video. What blows me away is the Honda technicians don't bother replacing them.

Hello, at how many miles did you replace the break pads? Thank you 🙏🏼

I am giving BREMBO the chance after the OEM. I just got the sets from Italy. Just found out they make them for the new GW. I will just swap the plates. I had them on a k1600. Superb and cheaper too.

Why don't you link the brake pads and bolts??
@davidspensberger7862
@davidspensberger7862 2 года назад
idk i seem to remember on gl1500 front brake grip uses one side of caliper in front and one side in back foot brake does activates other sides front and back interlinked brakes i think they call it

Looks like you put the right side pads on upside down. There are arrows on the bend over tabs, my understanding is they are supposed to be pointing up.
@flyboy1ron
@flyboy1ron 2 года назад
When I did my brake pads I put them in with the arrows pointing down, not knowing the correct way to install them was pointing up, and they would squeal. After making comments on social media about it squealing, someone told me to install them with the arrows up and I did, and the squeal went away.

Brake pad wear is normal. Even back in the days of drum brakes on cars and motorcycles the wear was not always the same on each pad. Yep I’m old enough that I’ve done drum brakes on motorcycles.

Sorry, never heard of replacing caliber bolts when changing pads. I would clean old locktite off and reapply locktite, tighten to spec and move on.

I agree I recently had the shop do my brake pads as I was having the tires replaced - so they did the pads at the same time - I’ll bet they didn’t replace the bolts (no charge - for doing brakes and no charge for bolts?? - so I doubt they replaced them???) Can I now just replace the bolts and properly toque them without removing the calipers?

Just curious, how many miles did you have on your bike when you replaced them. I know we all use brakes at a different pace. I bought replacements last year but found I was ok all around. UPDATE: your video was a timely reminder to recheck my brake wear. The left front pads looked like yours, inside pad was about a 1/3 of the outside pad and ready to be replaced. The right caliper had almost even wear inside and out. I have 27,000 miles at this time and mostly ride the twisties in mid Missouri that are just below tail of the dragon difficulty.

Did my front at 12K and didn’t really need them. I saw how uneven the wear was and just changed them anyway.
@jeffreycash3662
@jeffreycash3662 2 года назад
CM, could the unusual wear be a result of the rider's style of braking within the parameters of Honda's integrated braking system? Personally I understand why there is integrated braking but I prefer them separately, like old school bikes, ie front brakes via lever, back brakes via the pedal.

When purchasing the maintenance videos, are all procedures included or just the procedure shown. Eg replacing brake pads. Are they then downloaded to a phone?

I replace mine with each tire change which is around 12,000. Curious how much you got out of a pair it says 4k. Very simple change I think the torque specs are a little heavy for such lightweight bolts in the fact that they caliper sit on bosses. Much simpler design than my Honda Valkyrie.

It depends a lot on riding style.

@@cruisemansgarage I know you do a lot more highway than I do. I'm just curious what people are getting out of a set of front brake pads. Mine were pretty well worn out at 12,000. Check the back ones and there's more than 50% on those.
@gordonb216
@gordonb216 2 года назад
@@Doc832 Also 2018 GL non-tour. At 30,000 km (18,000 miles) in September I measured the brake pads and found front had 60% and rear had 75% remaining I hardly use the rear pedal and mainly highway miles. If this ratio stays I will easily get 30,000 miles. My next big maintenance comes in 2024 at 50,000 km so I will replace both sets then. Please note I do not ride this bike much in the city.
@Doc832
@Doc832 2 года назад
@@gordonb216 well thanks for the heads up on that. I ride this bike more like a sport bike in the twisties and country back roads. I do a lot of city driving and not enough highway that's for sure. My front brakes were down to about 20% when I changed the front tire. I just checked my back brakes the other day and I still have more than 50% left. I may still change them out when I change the tire. I bought extra rim and tires from eBay so it's just a quick switch out. Thanks for the info. Good to know what the OEMs should get.

I had 35,000 when I changed out both front and rear, thanks to Cruisemans maintenance videos, rear could have gone another 5K. I won't go that long for the front. I do a lot of braking coaching safety classes and lots of slow speed parking lot practicing.

I'd put the pistons all the way back and then clean the jaw and then make the plates. You're showing it pretty sloppy
