Jonas Herman, a certified fiduciary is the brain behind my success. I've gotten into a plethora of assets with $25k spread across stocks (options and futures) for the short term, index funds, and ETFs, for the long term. I take profits from time to time (ie sell some but not all of my shares that have done well)- we've definitely hit a high point. And our portfolios have performed rather well. One could in theory sell everything now and wait for the next crash, then buy in again. It could continue upwards - but there will at least be a decent correction at some stage.
@acmramon
@acmramon Месяц назад
Hi. Im new this, i want to ask you how do you take the profits? Sell all the shares or just a part? Example £1000 of shares and £200 profit how will you take profit out? Ty
@SuperBartles
@SuperBartles Месяц назад
@@acmramon Good question. I didn’t make that sufficiently clear. I have to say that I’m not any sort of qualified financial advisor, and these are all just my personal thoughts. I really meant to sell just some of the shares - or all if one wishes, but I thought an idea would be to sell just some of one’s position. If there’s a company with colossal share size (as Amazon used to be) someone could have had 2 shares that had grown to $6000. Selling one share would have meant they’d sold half their position, but some brokers allow people to buy and sell fractions of shares
@SuperBartles
@SuperBartles Месяц назад
Some investors say just buy and hold. They say you can’t accurately guess when the top and bottom of the market are, which is true, except that one does know when one has made a decent profit already I OTOH have something of a trader’s mentality, partly because I’m now in my early 50s and am not going to be holding for 30 years.
@damianbragg

If you sell now you'll start making 5.2% straight away if you keep it within the stocks/cash ISA on 212. Is this a reasonable strategy?
@mrkiplingman
@mrkiplingman Месяц назад
For short term maybe but for long term growth absolutely stay invested in the stock market you will pretty much beat any cash isa in the long term.
@MitchShoesmith
@MitchShoesmith Месяц назад

Remember that cash in your stocks and shares 212 ISA is not protected by the UK Government guarantee if you opt for the 5.2% interest now. If you are staying in cash for a while open a 212 cash isa and put it in there. It's easy to transfer between the two accounts and it means your cash is fully protected.

I sold a chunk of tech ETFs (874 of IITU) in my ISA on way down (18/7) and then bought 899 of IITU back for same money on 25/7. Reckon I saved £600 but was lucky! I have done this a few times in my ISA (no CGT in an ISA) - if I think price is going down due to sentiment (no solid reason) after a week, then I sell. When sentiment wanes or price has dropped enough, then I buy them back at the lower price. It is like catching a falling knife but I don't look for the bottom to buy back in, I just buy back at a lower price.
