Recently I ventured out to shoot some old machinery on a farm I visit quite often. But this time I mixed it up by shooting some milky way time lapses as well as standard still images. I hope you like it.

Many people talk about wanting a nightscape with clear skies. I thought some of my time lapses were ruined with clouds. They turned out to be some of my best and most dramatic time lapses.

@Robert-R 2 дня назад
Hello again, Richard. You had a very busy night shooting the night sky! Fantastic imagery as always. With regard to the time lapses, you mentioned setting your interval at 18 secs to allow for the 15 sec exposure + 3 secs between images. Well, you likely only ended up with 1-2 secs between images, which doesn't really matter much for the end result, but the reason why might at some point if you were to leave a smaller pause. The reason is that cameras lie sometimes with regard to shutter speed. Especially at the longer exposures of 15-30secs. A shutter speed of 15 secs is actually 16 secs, and 30 secs is actually 32 secs. You can easily check this with a stop watch. If you think about it, shutter speeds are based on a 1 sec baseline. Leaving aperture and ISO alone, in order to increase/decrease by 1 stop you need to double/halve your shutter speed. So, 1 sec goes to 2, 4, 8, 15 and 30 secs on your camera to increase by 5 stops, but the camera is really exposing your images at 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 secs,. So, your 15 sec exposures were actually 16 secs and typically the camera needs about a second to reset for the next image. If you make the interval too short it will still take the shots, but you will likely end up with fewer images than you wanted. The timing difference is the same thing on the other end of the scale but it doesn't really matter.. 1/30th is really 1/32nd. 1/250th is really 1/256th. And so on. All cameras do this. Fortunately, Nikon doesn't follow the same convention for the extended shutter speeds. So, 60 secs is actually 60 secs.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 дня назад
Yes all of that is correct information Robert. I actually set the 18 sec to establish a total shooting time as much as anything else. The gap between shots in slow moving night photography is less relevant. Appreciate your insights.
@Robert-R
@Robert-R День назад
@@nightscapeimages.richard Yeah, for timelapses a difference of a few seconds plus or minus in the gaps doesn't really matter. My comment is more relevant to doing star trails and where it messes people up is in them not getting the right number of shots because the camera will count down at whatever interval you set, even though it may not have finished taking the previous exposure.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard День назад
