This video is from a presentation I did for The Photography Show 2020 talking about how to take portraits with great lighting despite using minimal kit and having little space.
Check out more including the kit I use over on my website at www.glyndewis.com

I have learn so much with your videos. I'm still much "green" on this kind of photography but i notice, as you said, i allways try to change the lights between diferent sessions, like something necessary. And that is not a good way

if i may ask, is your camera always in portrait/vertical orientation or do you occasionally photograph faces in wide/landscape mode?
@glyndewis
@glyndewis 2 года назад
Yeah I do vary it from time to time; you'll see a couple in landscape orientation in my most recent video too 👍

Excellent video. Excellent instructor. I looked up the background at B&H. They stock canvas and vinyl. Do you use the canvas more often? Thanks.

Many thanks...Great tutorial...I actually used your technique in Adobe Dimension, using a Mixamo male model seated, and then created a light from a 'rectangluar' object with a glow material to provide the light, (the standard 'lights' in Dimension are limited in where I can actually position them), but using an object as a light I can move it anywhere! Bottom line, this tutorial was one of the best of the best! By the way are you getting settled into your 'new' place? Thanks again! Say are you 'presenting' at Max 2020?
@glyndewis

Hey Mark..I'm going to have to give that a go now :) At the time of replying we've not moved just yet...about 3 weeks from now we reckon...fingers crossed.

I’m just learning OCF is there a tutorial that’s best for learning what power to have your strobe lights or speed lights on for indoor and outdoor portraits?

Hi Cindy. My 'Timeless' Tutorial over on my website covers indoors OCF and I'm going to be putting together an 'on location tutorial / course in the near future

Kudos! May I ask the approximate fstop used? f8? ty
@glyndewis
@glyndewis 3 года назад
For the seated portraits maybe f/8 to f/11 but the very close up portraits I use sometimes f/2.0 - f/2.8

Something that over time has evolved in my photography is that I have moved from first concentrating on settings and type of equipment to first concentrating on the composition of the image. I want my viewer to first be aware of the composition and preferably be unaware of the equipment used. Is my approach to tackling photography correct?

@11:15 I thought smaller light source close to the subject created a sharp light
@glyndewis
@glyndewis Год назад
No … small light source in close means softer.
@chrism7067
@chrism7067 Год назад
@@glyndewis is that only in comparison to a larger light farther away? Im just trying to learn. I've placed an object on a table and moved a 9x9inch light box (wrapped picture frame) closer with the light. It sharpened the shadows since there was less diffusion before hitting the subject. I'm really new to photography. I'm just trying to better understand of I'm miss understanding, apologies if I sound like anything but willing to learn.
