He declared a garrison state to perpetuate himself in power beyond the expected time or perhaps forever. Parang si Idi Amin ng Uganda, who declared himself president for life. Kung hindi pa lumusob ang Tanzanian troops sa Uganda para siya mapatalsik. He was called the butcher of Uganda. It was also the US that gave Marcos Sr. the green light to declare martial law. At that time the US government is fighting their personal war in Vietnam against the north Vietnamese communist gov't. Kailangan ng US ang support ng Ph gov't dahil narito ang one of the biggest US military installations sa Subic and Clark airbase.
