I'm just learning how to cut videos and play in resolve, imagine the complexities in my mind watching this, but i was able to finish it anyway just to see what i am getting into. I'll definitely rewatch this someday and nod with conviction. Thanks !
The colours!! And the multiple timelines for clean up and clip swaps! That's genius! For a long term photographer and adobe user like myself you're demystifying the davinci universe:)
You're a good teacher! Still a bit over my head, just now got DaVinci 16. Love it but still need to learn it! I love how you blended yourself into the screen when you needed to show more of the timeline tools!
Just found this -- many thanks for all you're doing. Seriously, the whole workflow with multiple timelines is a HUGE help -- I'm not a pro or in the business, I'm just editing home movies shot with a GoPro. Many thanks, keep up the good work.
ran across this video just in time for me to start editing a shoot that has been done from three different positions, since we only have 1 camera at this time we shot on 3 different days from three different positions. this is a play in a theater in the round.... thanks for the excellent tutorial on combining timelines .....
3:50 - That's DOPE - I finally know how to operate on one big fusion clip on main timeline and on few clips that are "parts" of that one big clip. Thanks!!!!
What a great teacher you are. I wish I had discovered you earlier. I am a beginner and have been for 4 years now. That's not a typo. I always wondered how professionals built up a timeline without losing track of what they were doing. Like bits that get chopped out where do you put them and how do you find them again if they are needed. I don't know how one retains that in your head. Stupid question I know.
Wow! I'am very thankful I found your channel! Exactly what I searched for kind of tips for Davinci Resolve! Great explanation and tips and that you share your workflow! Also very good that you have the hole Resolve windows at fullscreen all the time and doesn't zoom in and out all the time like many other does on video tuts. Great work Jay!
This was excellent. I'm new to video editing software in general and Davinci Resolve is my first experience in it. Some tutorials (in some cases some of your videos as well) were difficult to follow because nuances of the software interface are omitted as the user moves around. This despite reviewing the video several times and still not catching what it was that was clicked to enable something or other such activity. This video left me with no questions on the various things that were covered. All navigation of the software in this video was very clear. In my opinion your best video to date. I'm still in the dark with Fusion and Fairlight as a beginner. I hope you create videos covering those aspect of Davinci as effective as this one was. Thanks Jay.
I looked at one of your tutorials for the first time a week ago, kind of thinking "what is this guy really going to show me that I don't already know?" But, these tutorials have turned out to be crazy awesome.
Hi JayAre, This was great (as is all of your stuff). I am great fan of your work. I do have a thought for a great tutorial for a real life situation: those of us that have moved to Davinci Resolve from FCP X are likely to miss the simplicity and power of the Magnetic Timeline. In particular a place where I have found that it is painful to use Resolve is where I have, say, three music tracks linked to my main track, and carefully cut clips to match the beat of those tracks. Now if I start editing around where the first music track is attached, I have to turn ON the Edit icon for the later two tracks, so that any insertions I make move those out (or deletions move them in). But the track that is coincident with where I am editing must have the Edit icon turned OFF, otherwise I will start chopping up the music clip as I make my edits to the main track. Remembering which of these Music tracks have to have their Edit icon turn on or off is painful. The Magnetic Timeline makes this really easy. First thing that I had to learn as an FCP X user coming across what that I needed to use a different track for each Music clip so I could toggle the Edit icon separately. (That wasn't obvious.) I also wonder if there is an easier way to do this, and not have to spend so much time thinking about these Edit icon settings? i.e. what I am looking for is to link the Music Files to a particular clip that is at the starting point where that music begins to play, and have it move around directly linked to that clip. Perhaps Link the Clips together? Perhaps using Compound clips is another way to simplify this. Interested in your thoughts, as I am sure you have run into this situation frequently with different music attached to multiple B-Roll segments in your timeline. Thanks, David
This is awesome! Really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I think a video like this showing an efficient color grading workflow would be awesome. How to correct and match multiple clips then how to go back and add the look. Most tutorials show one or two clips at a time. Be interested to see how you organize and approach a larger color grading project!!
My mind is blown!!! Resolve makes it possible to view multiple timelines adjacent to each other - sharing clips - comparing the difference!!! WOW!!! This is something I would think while in the moment of needing this feature. But I just assumed it didn't exist. So Premier Pro does this?
Thank you so much for this! I just downloaded DVR and watched the introductory training video and the guy did a decent job teaching the basics but these multiple timeline tabs made no sense to me. This is amazing and such a powerful tool!
Hello, Thanks for the tutorial Your tutorials are always clear and pleasant to look at, and also very informative. I look forward to some of your work / tutorials in Fusion 😀👍👍👍
Hey man I love your Davinci tutorials. I'm learning video editing from the very beginning and you're a big help. It's interesting just to see how somebody who knows the program inside out uses it.
Great vid JayAre! Let's say I have a downscaled timeline (as you do in this case) and that I want to accomplish the following: - Trim the clip from both ends - Crop in with as high quality as possible (let's pretend it's a 4k clip vs hd timeline) - Add transitions and/or visual effects (In this case the transitions are presets that start from frame 0) Could you explain how you best can accomplish the above and which order you would do it in etc.? Also, let me know if I can clarify anything regarding my question. Looking forward to your reply :)
I've been watching a few of your videos. I think they're really good. Only now did I just realise I hadn't yet subscribed... well I've fixed that now. Thanks.
Again, detailed and extremely clearly presented tutorial! Thousand thanks, once more! One question if you'd be kind enough: if I take a clip to Fusion page (click fusion tab, clip selected) and make a text with effects. I then come back to Edit page and all is well.If I then go to Color page and make changes, they affect the text as well. Which is not what I wanted. For example if there is white text and I make large color shifts, they all affect the text and it no longer is white. Again, thank you very much for your tutorials, easily the best out there, Teemu, Finland
Great video. I would appreciate something similar when dealing with timelines. For example, I have a 25 minutes short movie consisting of approx 12 scenes. How can I create multiple timelines within resolve for each scene and then combine into one?
Great vid! Just wanted to leave some token of appreciation for the work you're doing with this channel. Definitely going to see every single video :-) Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Some super nice tips here bro. Thanks very much. I'm thinking about how to use these 'nested' timelines for intro's and outro's that are reused in multiple videos. Does this kind of use make sense, or better to just render it and drop it in?
Thanks buddy I wish I could like this video twice. The question, how can I cut the timeline to fit the clips? when I play it plays beyond the end of the last clip
Hey JR, Thanks for such a great channel. Really enjoying and learning heaps as a new DR user. One thing has been driving me crazy, which I just figured out today...... Adding new video footage within fusion page: Any added mediaIn node will play/preview IF on the edit page the clip is either video or a fusion clip. It will not play if the original clip is a image file with fusion effects on it. I figure it has something to do with the fact it is a still image with fusion effects, but I can't understand why? Any animation created with background nodes and text plays but not imported video. Thanks again for the vids bro. :)
Thank you for this video. So it is possible to do motion graphics in Fusion page with timing in the Edit page? Another question, if you were to make changes in the timeline would that reflect in the Fusion page or would you need to create a new Fusion clip?
Hey, it's a small thing, but I appreciate that you fade back your inset image when the focus needs to be on something that would otherwise be blocked from view. Thanks!
There are not many people doing tutorials for davinci, and its very helpful to have someone that really seems to know what he is doing, I would like to know the rig that he is using, since it seems that davinci has some issues with footage from the likes of gopro hero, and also sometimes, it would be easier to only have the screen captioning the software, its a little bit distracting to have such a big part of the video showing Jay, its kinda unnecesary
Hey Jay, thank you very much for your great tutorials! They really do help and you are a good teacher. I wonder what was the shortcut at 11:52 to 'close the gap'? It's such a hassle to do it manually. Thanks in advance and keep it up. Best Tom
Hello Jay, your videos are super helpful and very well created! I cannot find the way to create keyboard shortcuts for the colors clips, can you help please?
@@arsh0603 I had the same issue. Using 1-9 as shortcuts doesn't work. The clips only changed color on media pool. But when i used f1 - f12 as shortcuts it worked fine. I really don't know why.
Hey man, been watching your videos for a while. Really helped me transitioning from Premiere into Resolve. Great stuff. Question: if the only difference between compound and fusion clips is whether you can see layers in Fusion, why not having just one kind of clip. I mean, is there any advantage in using compound over fusion clips if Im not planning to do any fusion work on them? if there isn't then they seem like an unnecessary extra option, since both basically achieve compounding numerous clips into one. Thanks
Another excellent tutorial. Thanks! I do have one question: I have occasionally found myself with audio that has gotten out of sync with the video due to editing with a locked video layer or similar. I have searched to find a quick command to re-sync the sound to the video, but not found one. Do you know if there is a command to do that? Many thanks for your great content. Between you and Theo Miesner, you have helped me get comfortable enough with Resolve to give up FCP X completely.
Hi, Jay! Thanks for your nice tutorials! I noticed that you are on Windows as well, and I was wondering if you have the Swap Edit working for you. I only have the Swap Insert with Ctrl+Shift and drag the clip. Supposedly this was supposed to be the key combinations for Swap Edit, but what I get is Swap Insert. Could you share your experience on this?
Great info here Jay. I’m just drilling down into davinci resolve 16 and am quite familiar with NLE workflow in general but I find that most tutorials on YT are either rank beginner level or extremely technical deep dives and they all miss that big gap in between. Your video covers that territory very nicely and I’d encourage you to do more like this one on various tabs if you haven’t already. Sub’d and liked.
Thanks, I really needed to know how to get layered videos into Fusion, this will make working with transitions in Fusions much nicer, I can just use a merge and a mask which I animate... great. I saw a video about some VFX shot in Fusion where text is getting a burning in effect by using text on white background, then blur it and animate a brightness/contrast node. the effect looks good - but how do I turn the white background back into transparency? There is no blend mode for "burn" in the merge node in Fusion.
hey bro, nice vids , please im completely new to resolve program but i have 1 question please if you can help me, basically there two times reading uptop of playback video one is high than the other and one is on left top corner and one is on the right corner can you please explain for does that mean and what is the different between them, because before i export my 2 hours video its says 3 hours 19 min in timeline but after i export it its 2 hours 19 min. thank you in advance for your help
hi Jay, noobie here with DvR 15, decided to take the plunge from premiere tell me, is it possible to have a static playhead on resolve on your time line? like that smooth scroll feature on premiere that lets the whole timeline scroll instead of the playhead itself love the videos btw, following your tutorials to practice my editing
Great video, I have a question regarding clips in timeline. Do you know how to lock clips in timeline so that when I add new clips, it will not move other clips in the timeline?
Swapnil Sohani on each video track header there is an icon that looks like a box with two little arrows inside. That will disable auto editing when dropping new clips into other tracks.
Great idea for coloring the clips, however for some reason "edit timeline"= ctrl+num1 for red is not changing the selected clip to red. Is it the wrong shortcut key?
I have 3 timelines t1 t2 t3, t1 and t2 has different output blanking values, when I put t1 & t2 on t3 output blankings dont show up and t3 plays without any output blanking. Is there any way to switch back and forth between different aspect ratios? thank you for great content.
is there a way to layer things on top of eachother in the timeline? like V1 A1 and on top of it V2 A2 Usually davinci resolve does V1 V2 _ A1 A2 ... and I HATE IT , it makes the feeling so uncomfortable and clunky and dunno how to do it the "movie maker" way
Hi there, THANKS so much for the dual Timeline view. Maybe you or anyone here can help me with a crucial Shortcut I am looking for ever since I switched from Premiere / Avid: Is there a possibility to switch between the two timelines without always clicking with the mouse ? Meaning = Shortcut ? What do I have to look for in the keyboard shortcut menu to asign such a function ?
Is there any way to move windows/panels from resolve around with Dual screen? I need for example to have on a screen my full editing timeline and the media pool panel and in the other screen the source screen and sound. It's something like this possible? Thank you for the video!
Hi Jay, I really do appreciate your work, I got one question though. I recently purchased one of your transition packs and what I noticed is that after I added in the transition, playback this part is absolutely impossible. I already tried the common tips like render caching etc but it won't make that much of a difference. And I got a pretty decent PC. Any advice how I could maintain my workflow? Because there just seems to be no way I can see the changes I have made in real time
Blackmagic design has said it's going to 18 months or so to fix the performance issue some are having. Email support if you are looking for help. RU-vid isn't the best of platforms to have an ongoing support conversation.
@@JayAreTV Alright thank you, I might record a video and send you a link via the email support so that you have a better picture, just have to figure out when I got the time.
