I remember this well. One lesson learned was that the state of Missouri could have and should have acted immediately when they knew of the problem. State government leaders showed a total disregard for people in order to protect themselves from bad press and lawsuits. Sadly, as a Missouri resident, I can’t say that they’ve learned to do any better.
I met Marilyn. After 1982 there was another flood I don’t remember the year. I was a mobile feeding supervisor for the Red Cross. Even tho they weren’t flooded we would go feed the people in the temp housing just to help them out. Living conditions weren’t good just a bunch of bunks. They did let me drive past the sign and into the neighborhood it was very spooky. Looked in a few windows, which we weren’t supposed to do and it looked like people were living there. Plates on the table books on the coffee table etc. I’ll never forget it.
My husband just died of a very rare cancer at 48 bc his mom swam in Castlewood Pool, Russell Bliss dumped barrels near there (it was a spring fed pool) and he paved the parking lot w his sludge. My husbands mom and sister both died of rare cancers from the pool at 4 years old and 46. Why isn’t Russell bliss in jail??? I have 2 little kids without a dad thanks to him.
You cannot put someone in jail when they are not responsible like it or not bliss did not know what he was doing, and it wasn’t required for him to know legally at the time plain, and simply, that’s why he’s not in jail because by the law not emotion he did nothing wrong
The dioxin was a waste product of the manufacturing of agent orange. The plant space was rented from Syntex Agribusiness in Verona. This sludge was stored in a vertical tower that contained 10,000 gallons of the stuff. The leasee of the plant didn't tell Syntex of the potential hazardous nature of their leftover sludge. Middle Missouri got real lucky that a tornado didn't come through there.
Just imagine living your whole life somewhere--especially an idyllic and tight-knit community such as Times Beach--only to be told ya gotta go and you can't take anything with you, because it's contaminated with Dioxin (as well as also dealing with a record 100 year flood and it being Christmas, nonetheless). I don't know how these folks did it, but they all have my respect!
@@gatewayexplorer9973 Awesome. I love your work. I just did Castle Wood after watching your vid a couple of days ago. Going to do Al Foster this weekend. Thanks, and keep them coming so we all can have an interesting summer.
For 5 years I lived in Crescent and went to Eureka elementary school when i was a kid. Been to times beach several times back in early to mid 70's and still remember how the gravel roads smelled of sprayed oil. Imo it stunk and i specifically recall asking why and was told it was because of the dusty roads. I also remember thinking no way I'd want to live in this town. Thank god i only visited there a few times.
I remember watching Times Beach slowly decay over the years as we drove past on the interstate. If memory serves me right it was a later flood (post 1982) that finally caused the eradication of the remaining buildings to follow shortly after. Sad, very sad...
Verona Mo. is the origin of manufacture. The Blue Goose sat by the creek until it was dismantled, and scrapped. The Blue Goose was the incinerator they used to clean up both sites. Verona had all the same history with using the oil to treat the roads, and cattle rubs. Verona didn't get the option of a buy out,and it's still there as a small town.
We lived in Salem throughout most of the 80's and I remember the big signs along the highway stating it was a quarantined zone. I was young and always though it meant the town was hit by a virus because nobody explained it to me.
I lived in Times Beach when I was a tween-17. I remember the water began to pour into iur yard, and we barely got out. We got back in and celebrated christmas in our house. The water got 4 ft in our second story. It was sad....anyway, i was there.
Oh s*** I remember this Flood, I wasn't even a year old! There are baby pictures of me right next to the river in Missouri. God it seemed like it lasted for forever. I lived with my parents conversation at Fort Leonard Wood living off face. °~•.☆.•~°
I was a little boy back then I remember my mom and grandma talking about Times Beach . It's been decades ago but i still remember watching and seeing all of the activity in Times Beach of I-44 while going to Six Flags. Now I am a man that lives hundreds of miles away from St Louis. Times Beach is gone but there is something underneath Lone Elk Park. What is it ? Dexter Lombardo 🧔🤠 A St Louis son
Just a terrible ordeal. Today if a residential community were built there, say by professionals, the streets would be automatically paved, there would be sidewalks, curbs, outside lighting, probably regular garbage collection, and possibly a swimming pool. My sister died from a rare form of cancer in 2012 but we grew up near Grant's Farm.
Most of the people moved out of the beach because of the flood when your house was engulfed by water you couldn't rebuild it if you wanted to he would just bulldoze it
That is so heartbreaking. As a military brat you don't think to have a HomeTown. If you're lucky enough to have discovered one outside military borders you know it's worth protecting and preserving. I'm terribly sorry for this loss. Sincerely Wyoming. Who's in the process of killing their citizens in a similar manner with having a refinery in the middle of the capital city. The city was founded long before 1940 when the refinery was built. This city is dirty, by all means unhealthy. Everything's filthy including restaurants accept the ethnic restaurants. I'm not joking. Don't even get me started about the tons of human feces underneath all the bridges. While God has me here I will do what I can to improve it. °~•.☆.•~°
To see the disaster again in Ohio with their railroad. This is 3rd world country crap. A whole town has lost generations of their LIVELIHOOD due to the last administration's infrastructure cut backs. °~•.☆.•~° Thank you CURRENT Administration for passing the infrastructure bill.
So, Norfolk Southern didn't get enough corporate welfare because of the Trump administration, is that what you're suggesting? A little more Federal $$$ and maybe they could run a railroad safely??
I appreciate that lady telling the truth ? And the truth is once again we see a situation where the u s government ignored and denied the real truth .I went to school with the times beach kids .my best friend was Stanley curtis.stan the man we called him .I knew 25 different kids from times beach .I lived in Fenton Missouri at the exact time this happened.i got alot of respect for this lady telling the truth.goverments basically criminals!
