Am I the only one who could listen to him all night?? His humbleness gets me. A great actor that many actors would love to be considered as good as, and yet he always talks about the people HE "looked up to." What a legend.
Michael Caine is always a wonderful partner, for example, in two of the films cited, apart from The Man Who Would Be King, there is excellent chemistry between the two lead actors: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Sleuth.
For me, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is one of the most underrated performances in Michael Caine's career. It's one of those performances that I never tire of watching.
For a man of such towering achievement over such a long period, Michael Cane’s humility and down to earth nature is wonderful. This man is a credit to his craft.
Andy, if you haven't done so read Caine's memoir Blowing the Bloody Doors Off- it's a self-help book, instruction manual on the craft of acting and so much more. A delight from beginning to end.
The Man who would be King is a magnificent piece of film making. It’s pretty much perfect and I have wonderful memories of my late Dad taking me to watch it. I would have been about 8, that same year he took me to see Zulu which had been re-released. Doesn’t get better than that for a young boy to see two of the greatest adventure movies ever made.
Agree COMPLETELY. It's power is EXTRAORDINARY!!! It's amazing there's only 2 actors in the whole movie...to quote a movie reviewer (paraphrasing here): "An acting battle royale and tour de force of a movie"...so true. It's one of those movies that's gets better the more times you see it (we movie nerds know what that means...e.g. you know you're a movie nerd when you've seen the same movie more than 20 times voluntarily).

I was asked recently for a recommendation for a really great old movie that no one knows. I fired off a few but Sleuth was top of the list. If you're into handsome British fellows from the 70s I'll include The Stuntman as recommended viewing.
1. Man Who Would Be King 2. Alfie 3. Zulu 4. Ipcress File 5. The Italian Job 6. Get Carter 7. The Eagle Has Landed 8. Escape To Victory 9. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels I tried to keep it at just 5 but he's done so many brilliant films!
Another one is "The Mission." Amazing photography and scenery and a fascinating story hidden in history. It doesn't make anybody's Top Ten list except mine.
i want to rewatch all these now ,,,i was in new york as an english man in the 80 ,s ,,i couldnt believe how many famous people you bump into ,,in one day, i saw and spoke to woody allen ,and mia in central park ,,and later i spotted michael and his wife up town ,hailing a taxi ,,i had intended to just say hello im a big fan ,,,,but as i got nearer i could see , he was fuming as there was no taxi for him ,,,the language was wild ,,,so i just turned and walked,,,,great days ,,i suspect that was woody s film at the time ,,,,great interview ,your right about the king ,,,but so many great films ,for some reason ,,never mentioned ,,odd,,,,
I'm glad Dirty Rotten Scoundrels gets mentioned here as it's such an underrated film and absolutely hilarious. Slightly surprised The Italian Job doesn't get mentioned or Zulu or The Ipcress File as in the UK those were three of his most popular films at the box office. He's also excellent in Educating Rita.
@allie fisher I did not know he was in Korea ...Thanks. He really is great....his solid personality comes through , right through the screen . He was A-1 Tops in ...The Quiet American with Fraser.
I've seen Michael Caine talk about lots of stuff. I have to say that I truly love this guy. Bright, Intelligent, Witty. Britain you have a national treasure.
I am so confused, as a major MC fan i find it incredible that nobody mentioned what i think is MC's best piece of acting in this thread. Although he was only in the movie for a short time, his mere presence made a film gravitate to a higher level as his subtle acting shone through like a beacon and made the movie a must watch heart warmer// Cider House Rules.
The man who would be king is a work of genius Every choice is brilliant and caine and connery together are amazing. The opening sequence before peachy's arrival at Kipling's office is so confident - just shots of India, relaxed, dense and fascinating and complex. Beautiful. And then... the greatest shaggy dog story ever. Plummer is also perfect as kipling.
I adore Michael Caine -- he has one of the greatest film careers in the history of the movies, and it spans almost 60 years, going on. And sure as heck he's one of the greatest storytellers. I saw him tell his stories in person once, at a tribute to him in Hollywood. He had people laughing till they practically fell out of their seats.
This is so lovely and amusing. Many thanks for uploading. Michael Caine, as well as being a wonderfully talented actor, is in that fine tradition of English actor raconteurs that includes David Niven and Peter Ustinov. You would certainly want him to be a guest at you 'perfect dinner party.'
I never understood why Second Hand Lions wasn't a major hit. Caine & Duvall at the top of their game. A wonderful script, music & pure movie magic. 😃 So entertaining!
A true genius, entertainer, actor and a humble man with a huge sense of fun and soooooo professional. Proper gent and one of the best. Watch his acting tutorials... Genius...
Caine's acting in war dramas was always spot on. Just to mention Zulu, A bridge too far and Battle of Britain. He was a conscript (National Service) soldier in the Korean War. It helps differentiate him from the current crop of actors who have never served.
And its the role in which the famous film critic Pauline Kael gave Caine a rare glowing review and lauded him as one of the greatest actors of the day. And he couldn't even mention it. Disappointing. No villa in the south of france i guess....
Here he is... A British actor who could play an American with that British accent and be totally Believable.! He is more magician than actor...which is a big complement.
Alfie is a very underrated movie. I've always been fascinated by the way Michael Cain would stop and talk to the camera and everyone else around were totally unaware.
Alfie was a massive hit all over the world (except France, apparently) and it made Caine's career. It's not "underrated", it's just nearly 60 years old, so younger people may not have seen it. As for speaking directly to the camera, while Caine is brilliant at it, that's in the script.
If I had to pick not just a favourite actor but a favourite human being Michael Caine would be in the top 3! So humble and just a nice man! I pray the world keeps him for many more years.
Love the bloke to bits, and I love to hear his natural voice, even after all these years of living here there and everywhere, he still has an accent you hear everyday here in London, every day down the pub, at a football match, and in the markets.
Said Nivens ..the Moon is a Balloon is another Incredible book...and I Mean Incredible..should say " David Niven". The stories he tells there are out of this World *
He's made some classic films, my particular favorites of his are; Get Carter , Zulu, Man who would be King , The Italian Job, Educating Rita and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
I want to watch Sleuth again... two bravura performances and MC matched LO every way and got that fantastic compliment from LO. My late Father worked with MC and Christopher Plummer on the Hamlet 1964 movie, he was the recording engineer. True story.
I remember seeing Sleuth in the theater at 14 years old & being mesmerized by Caine & Olivier. It wasn't until I got home that I realized they were the only 2 actors in the movie!
Saw him in N.Y. He is such a gentleman and such a good actor! Enjoyed his movies and enjoyed his acting. He seemed to put himself down and praised other actors but truth is truth believe we all enjoyed his performance!
Funny, I was just thinking about that very film. My sister took me to see it when I was a kid, I'm sure I only picked it because of the girl on the poster. I hope she at least marginally enjoyed it, I doubt it was her cup of tea at all but she took me out for the day and gave me free choice of what to go and see.
To have Laurence Olivier, one of the greatest actor of his generation, to consider Michael Caine as his partner in acting, probably meant more to Michael than any Oscar he received.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest British actor followed by Sir Lawrence Olivier,Charles Laughton, Claude Rains,Cary Grant,Alec Guiness n Peter Finch.Worjed with some great talented but his present was always felt.Greatest among the greats.❤️🙏
Back around 1990 I worked in the Dallas area. A local talk show host was doing one of those "off site" interviews with Caine at a Half Price Books location near my office (Caine was publicizing and signing copies of his new autobiography). When I found out, I left work, drove to the book store, and spent the next couple of hours hanging out around the table listening to him reminisce and tell stories about the movies he had worked in and the people he had worked with. A "peak experience" I will always treasure.
Michael Caine brings something special to a movie role. I love all of his movies, especially Sleuth, Hannah and Her Sisters, Zulu, and later Flawless and Harry Brown.Glad this video was recommended May 2021.
Would you want to direct the remake and be compared to the original? I watched it again recently...still an amazing movie. (cost of extras would be horrendous now)
War is always racist. But there is some respect given to the Zulu impi's. "They can run twenty miles in the morning, and win a battle in the afternoon." (I may have the exact figures wrong). My analysis is, that the British took South Africa from the Dutch Afrikaaners, who took it from the Zulus, who had taken it from the previous African inhabitants! Notice also that the victorious little company are not English Brigadiers, they are Welsh Engineers!
Get Carter should be in the english version of the library of congress for the same reason The French Connection is in the library of congress. Its a perfect picture of that time and place that you hardly see in most movies, especially today when everything is either futuristic or bland so as not to be dated. And who would ever put that ending on a film now?
We don't have a star system in the uk, actors surrounded by security and assistants would be laughed at. But he exemplifies how an actor should behave. There's no scandal, no pap walks, no gossip. He goes to work and goes home.
Still remember him in the Ipcress File. Saw it so many times when it first came out. What an enjoyable actor to watch - in every film he's ever been in.
It is interesting that no one speaks of "Sleuth" here. A movie, set inside a house with only two characters talking....Olivier and Caine. You get to see two great thespians.
Sleuth was written by Anthony Shaffer a famous London playwright. And get this: he has a twin brother Peter Shaffer who wrote the incredible "Amadeus" that was made into the 1984 Academy Award film that won F. Murray Abraham best actor.
in fact though critics now sneer at michaels accent in zulu at the time everyone thought him a eton type nob so much so that there is footage of him testing for james foxs upper class toff part in magnificent men in their flying machines as producers thought him a public school type. ipcress ans alfie set the cockney tone the world loved though michael has played many types convincingly not just cockneys

Fascinating interview. My wife and I attended the Film Society Of Lincoln Center gala for Caine several years ago and enjoyed it immensely. He is a world class actor and a wonderful guy.
The assistant and partner comment at the end was something being saved because it meant so much to Michael. He is the humblest man ever and this would have been a life defining moment for him and one he shares with the greatest humility. You’ll not meet another famous, legendary actor who would share his sandwich with the average man. God I love him.
