Let's talk two resources that are a must-have as we inch closer to the start of the school year: the timetable and the weekly plans.
What's a timetable? How do we break down a term? Should we plan by day or week? How can you keep a high-level view of it all each week? How will I use these resources this fall?
We've got a little bit of Charlotte Mason philosophy and a little bit of practical application, and I hope it helps you!
Don't forget, my resources are available in Common House! 👇🏽

Yes to more organizational videos! Recovering perfectionist paralytic here 💁‍♀ but I also am a highly creative type so that if something gets into my imagination (perhaps via inspiring youtube vids) no amount of imperfection can stop me! Eyes on the prize and all that. I just made the decision to switch from AO to CMEC for next school year and am really excited. :)

I stumbled upon your channel recently and it has been such a blessing and inspiration! I have an almost 4 year old little boy, an almost 2 year old little girl, and we are expecting our third little boy to arrive at the end of May. Needless to say, any and all organizational/ time management videos would be incredibly valuable to this mama!

Hi Autumn! This has nothing to do with time tables, but as I'm listening to your video and seeing your lovely book collection, it made me think of the living library we just joined. This library is one of a very few in the country and it is amazing. She has 17k children's books that she's collected over 40 years. She is a believer and has approved all of these books, and it is so nice to go there and know that we are getting quality books for our children. Just wanted to share!

@@thecommonplacehomeschool Hi!!! I have an only child and he should be form 3 this year. It’s actually what I’m struggling with and don’t know what to do. This is our 5th year homeschooling and have always used Masons method but didn’t really know as much as I do now. I wish I dove deeper in my own understanding when he was younger. The curriculum we used first (which I still love but would tweak certain things to be more true mason) they didn’t start with our country. It was all ancient history. So joining the CMEC last year I started him in 2b to get that beginning us history. But I don’t know if I’m doing a disservice. I did talk to the form leader last year but still felt a little weary starting in 2A with an extra stream possible 3 all together if we did 2a upper. I’m sorry this is soooo long lol….so he should be form 3 (he’ll be 13 next month.) oh I should mention he was in public school till 2nd grade. I just don’t know what Mason would do with a student that is behind. I have all the volumes and don’t know if I’m missing it. But then again sometimes I still have a hard time understanding lol. You my friend seem to really have a handle on the approach and why I’m soooo happy to have found you!!! Sorry again for making this so long. I could even go longer lol….Hope you are having a fantastic day!!! 💜

@@nucca687 I'm so glad you shared! I can't speak to the middle years, but I do want to point you to Brandy Vencel of Afterthoughts. If you haven't been on her site, it's a pile of goodness. She's graduated her oldest and has so much wisdom to share about Mason education from start to finish! And then, lastly, I understand what you mean by "behind" but in classical ed, the emphasis rests on deeply knowing instead of learning something by a grade or date. I hope that gives you encouragement that we all learn at different paces and at different times. (We're not even all ready for the same books at the same time even if they're on our year reading list!) What I love about classical ed is that it's an education for persons. I wasn't educated this way and am "behind" by the Form 1 standard, if we're being honest! But what a gift to be learning now, and I know it's a gift to be introducing him to living ideas in this year too.

Im glad you said youre not type A because some of your planning is so detailed it makes me feel so bad I could never 😂 trying to find a system of planning that works for me as well. What sort of planning sheet do you use, just excel? anything on paper? I cant do the computer planning, I need the physical copy but then it also is hard to change once you make a plan.
@thecommonplacehomeschool
@thecommonplacehomeschool 2 месяца назад
Oh yes. I’m very Type A/detailed in planning and more Type B in execution. I don’t feel able to be more people-oriented (ie. able to shift for the person in front of me when needed) if I haven’t done the intense planning to show me where it needs to go/how it all fits together. I always start my planning on paper, usually scrap paper. I also need to write it all out. (I’m basically paper first for everything!) Then I move to my Notion for finalising plans, adding links, shopping items, etc.

@@thecommonplacehomeschool interesting perspective! I hadn’t thought of it like that, I love a beautiful plan and am great at that part as well but then not great at following it. But because now the plan exists, I feel stressed that it’s not being followed. So then I feel like I do better without having made set plans to begin with (but then it’s harder to track goals and how to meet them). Trying to find a good way to approach with as my oldest gets into school years

So encouraged every time I watch your videos! Thank you for spending the time making these. Side question: where did you get that beautiful clock you’re holding at the beginning? My oldest will be 6 soon and is learning how to tell time, so I’m on the hunt for a beautiful clock - also to remind me on a daily basis to tamale the most of the time God gives us. Thanks!

I am a Christian ( not a Catholic) and am just wondering how much of that plays into the book recommendations. Its hard for me to find information on it.
@thecommonplacehomeschool
@thecommonplacehomeschool 2 года назад
Great question! Mason was a devout Anglican so many of her recommendations for Bible will be Anglican/an Anglican perspective. As with many older books, they may be written by Catholics but the book isn’t Catholic. They pull from great literature of the western tradition! Ranging from EB White to Plutarch, depending on the year! You can also always choose to swap a book if you disagree with it (like a history book) but the CMEC isn’t a Catholic curriculum, so any Catholics choose to supplement and add-just like any other tradition would.

@@FostersFollowingJesus I subbed for some natural history, some common subjects (to align with our co-op), and tales and literature. I haven't looked at the upper forms much, though, so I'm not sure how things look for 6th and 8th! A lot of people make swaps, combine forms, etc. based on their family's needs so there's plenty of chatter about it!

How do you account for time you might be interrupted or pulled away from a lesson by younger siblings? With short lessons you need every minute I'm sure! Do you set a timer and pause it for interruptions?
@thecommonplacehomeschool
@thecommonplacehomeschool 11 месяцев назад
Great question! We talk about the younger siblings a lot in Common House! Since my daughter is doing notebook work about every 10-15 minutes (or so), I can usually ask the boys to wait until that spot and then pop out to help them!
