Timmy Burch wasn’t introduced until season 4 of South Park, but he INSTANTLY made a huge splash, and is easily one of the fandoms favorite characters in the show. I think it would be easy to expect South Park to make the handicapped kid a punchline, but on the contrary, Timmy is an incredibly well rounded and well respected character. By both fans AND the other characters in the show. And though he maybe doesn’t get as much focus as he did previously, he remains easily one of the most popular. So today, let’s explore the ins and outs of South Park’s Timmy Burch.

My brother was like Timmy. He was disabled, he could barely speak, and he did need assistant for a lot of things we take for granted. But he was also loving, smart, and always happy. I think it’s really honorable the way South Park uses Timmy, and I wish more media would acknowledge the overlooked community that Timmy represents.

Timmy is one of those characters that's so nice you question how the fuck he was born in south park. Him learning to say the band name because he doesn't want anyone to feel excluded, and the episode where he gets attached to the disabled turkey are so sweet. Seeing a character being genuinely tender just because they want to is rare in that town.

My mom is a teacher for kids with disabilities, she has a 25+ year career One of the things that I've learned from her is that the best way to make people with disabilities feel included and free, is to let them participate and make choices 😂 Is that simple, and the writers of South Park nailed it, they don't celebrate Timmy doing normal stuff, they don't patronize him either, and let him just be a regular kid The "Timmy 2000" episode reminded me of anecdote from my mom about a kid with down syndrome who was obsessed with motorcycles At that time all his family and the teachers were worried he was going to hurt himself if they let him near one, but one day he managed to get to the bike of one oh the teachers Not only he didn't do anything crazy, he just explored it and made questions, but also he was visibly happier after that That was almost 10 years ago, and iirc, he is now a mechanic My mom hates South Park, but she'd agree that Timmy has been treated well

Timmy is definitely one of my favorite characters from the series and it makes me a little sad that he’s fallen into the background over the years. It’s kind of crazy how frequently used Timmy was throughout seasons 4-10 considering that he went for several seasons afterwards without saying a word. His prominence in The Fractured But Whole and Handicar at least gave us some great moments, but more Timmy is only a great thing. Hope to see him make another return soon!

Matt n Trey are good at picking characters to focus on. Simply put no stories they've had have a easy slot for Timmay. When he can fit in a story he'll slot in fine but he's usually there in episodes focused on the disabled. Sadly he does just say Timmay. It is hard for him to fit in when Jimmy actually talks more.
@alphabetsoup6837
@alphabetsoup6837 28 дней назад
If I remember correctly, Trey addressed the reason for this is because Timmy can’t speak dialogue and it’s very hard to write compelling stories when your character can only say one thing.
@Duskool
@Duskool 28 дней назад
Granted, the lack of focus on him gives him the luxury of being probably the only kid in the South Park cast without godawful parents, as they only show up once and never again. Come to think of it, his house also doesn't get shown again after Timmy 2000, not even in the games...

The time travel joke was top tier. it is both a joke at timmy's expense on a meta level, as well as being the punchline of a time travel joke because he can't tell anyone of his adventures, so him being all over time is a secret kept to himself.

Long time South Park fan here, I remember growing up watching reruns of episodes before I finally started to get into the show on a regular basis when season 8 aired. I always loved Timmy's character, even if sometimes I felt uncomfortable in certain moments because I was a kid and adults would always tell me and everyone else that people with severe mental disabilities were not to be made fun of or laughed at. But the way in which Timmy was treated by the boys was so akin to what it's like being a child and still having the innocence to not fully understand why Timmy is the way he is but include and befriend him, because it's not about what Timmy can and cannot do compared to everyone else, it's quite literally what their adventure is going to be today and Timmy is riding in tow with the action. Like Johnny and some of the rest of you, I felt disappointed when Timmy took a back seat in the following seasons so that Jimmy could ride shotgun with the plot. But, the same can be said for characters like Wendy, Token, and Craig, not always in the spotlight, but still important enough to escape permanent death in the series. I would love to see more episodes centered around Timmy, his early episodes are iconic and can never be replaced. The steroids and Gobbles episodes live rent free in my mind but there's definitely room for more.

What I love about timmy and jimmy is that their handicaps are not just setdressing but sometimes the jokes we laugh about. not because we feel pity but just like in life we find things others act and say funny. jimmy unable to form sentences is hilarious it is apart of his disability but we care about him as a character and the stuttering is funny and something we love about them. everyone has jokes made at their expense but between friends and people who care it's not out of malice but some slight ribbing. they are characters who are disabled not disabled characters and that is rarely seen.

Timmy is the type of diversity that every piece of media should strive for. Having characters that aren’t limited to just their gimmicks. As much as representation is more common nowadays. How often will you find an episode of a tv show or movie where a gay, trans or disabled person isn’t part of a story about their identity. Those stories are no doubt important in order to reverse a lot of the bigotry aimed that them for decades now. But at the same time. This is kind of representation is important to. True equality. Not just brining out your token characters when you want to write a story about a certain group.

My favourite Timmy scene is definitely the one where he tries to explain to Mr Mackey that Jimmy is taking steroids to win the Special Olympics

As a special Ed teacher, I really think Timmy is how disabled people should be shown in the media. Treating them like babies is actually super ableist.

at the nursing home i used to work at there was a young man about like Timmy his bones stone, unable to speak well but everyone loved him and tired to spend as much time as possible with him, I'm a little guilty of going to his room and playing a little bit of GTA5 with him during work hours myself

I love Timmy and Jimmy, I hate how many SP fans now use the characters to mock real disabled people who just want to go through their day-to-day in peace. I can not tell you how many disabled people have been harassed by these fans either, I'm only surprised it hasn't happened to me yet and once I finally get my mobility aids I know it won't be long till some ass-wipe follows me through the store yelling "TIMMEH TIMMEH" as I try to shop. People need to get normal about actual disabled people like yesterday..

Timmy is one of the characters who reminds me of why I think South Park works: The show takes a simple issue that society tends to overcomplicate and then throws that same issue back in our face. It's as you said about the creators VS. the network. The network was worried about backlash surrounding a disabled character and how they're portrayed, and the creators were just like, "You're stupid, now hold my beer," and showed the audience specifically why the issue was stupid, why it was easy to fix, and why it didn't need to become a complicated nightmare. Timmy (and Jimmy, for that matter) work partially because South Park reminds us that sometimes society makes things way harder than it needs to be and that we don't need to overcomplicate things by pushing our own ignorant perceptions onto the issue. Like the issue of how to "properly" treat the disabled. It's easy. Treat them as you would anyone else. This is sh*t we learned in elementary school. Clearly, the South Park kids understood that. Why can't the rest of us?

In the Latin America dub in Timmy first appearance he would say Vive una mentira Timmy (living a lie timmy) it didn't make any sense and I thought it was reference to some song or something like that
