I recently watched a video on Ranger Survival And Field Craft's channel titled "Ultimate Coffee Can Survival Kit". I thought it was done really well and wanted to challenge myself to make something similar. So this is my rendition of the ultimate coffee can survival kit! I tried to include items from all the groups Ranger Survival and Field Craft mentioned in his video.
Here is a link to his video:

Absolutely awesome kit. Very well thought out, and I think this can give a lot of people some really good ideas on how to prepare for themselves. If I may be so bold, I have just a few minor suggestions: 1) Pack the signal mirror and whistle at the top, and perhaps loop both on a length of cord sized right to be worn around your neck because if you do become lost or stranded, the first 72 hours from when you get reported missing is when the search and rescue teams will be the most active and are the most crucial for your survival. It's better to be rescued than rough it. 2) In your fishing kit, pre tie a few inches of leader to at least one fishing hook since health and weather conditions may make threading the eye of a hook nearly impossible. Same would apply to a sewing needle if one is included, just a few feet of thread on a pre threaded needle can really help. 3) The only addition to the kit I would add is a few paper coffee filters to help strain out any muck from the water you intend to sterilize or boil. Really like the mention of the importance of redunancy. I think many, as well as myself, have taken away some really good ideas and insights from you. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Excellent! Earlier tonight, before finding this video, I found 2 empty sweet wafer cans similar to yours., which I brought inside to hold my emergency kit components. I plan on making my own kit after studying the Ranger version & yours several times. A military P-38 can opener would provide back-up to the one on the Swiss Army Knife. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent. I agree with your item selection on the whole. Recommend a wide mouth, single-walled water bottle as the container (thrift stores have tons of these!), and perhaps a very small water filter as you’ll probably be sweating a lot in the emergency situ! Thanks for sharing your concept with us!

Another good option if finding the right bottle around is difficult is to get a clean kanteen 64 ounce wide mouth bottle its a good option albeit runs 30$ or so but its another option.

I just lived and "SURVIVED" yet another hurricane here on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Im sitting here thinking of all the things we needed to make it through the storm and then the days later of not having any electricity and therefore no running water. Funny thing.....most of what you have in that can....I never needed. The bug spray, yeah. Oh yes! Could you perhaps explain a situation where the elements of your survival system would be used?

Hi from the UK. Really enjoyed the video. I watch all the videos I can regarding survival kits and while all have merit, I often think about what I would add or leave out. This is probably the first that I would make NO changes to at all. I am a great believer in the 'Two is one' philosophy as well.

A good idea is to add more tiny fire starters, I use coton mixed with candle wax, it works amazing, also another idea is to have some cotton bandana to create char material with the can

FYI, Put some aluminum tap in your kit and make a foil pot to cook in with tap on bottom, check out aluminum foil pots and cups. Lots of room for straw containers.

your box is not good for boiling water because sh es not welded !it is crimped on the side and the bottom the water will relax the steel while heating and the container will leak
@NEP_Chris
@NEP_Chris 3 года назад
You are correct. I am in the process of finding a can to replace it that has metal lid like this one. In the meantime, I’ve added a fair amount of aluminum foil that I can line the inside of the can with and use it for boiling. I was wondering how long before someone would catch this detail. I myself didn’t think of it until after I had made the video. Thanks for watching. 👍

Nice video. If I am going to carry a kit that big, I would go with a Nalgene bottle and slip a stainless steel cup and cup stove on the end. It can then fit in a pouch and be carried on your belt. Good Luck, Rick

Well thought out kit the only thing I would do. Is add a few glucose tabs for a little pick me up and a couple trick birthday candles to help with fire. Also I’d go right below the rolled down top edge of the can and make a small hole on each side for a bail. The lid will cover them and it’s easier at home. Just my 2 cents but what do I know I’m just a dumbass behind a keyboard.

Great Kit. I would add an extra battery for flashlight and put in a wide mouth water bottle instead. Not as much room perhaps but better for storing water and boiling as somebody mentioned. Might also want to consider Pepto Bismol for first aid. Not fun if you are stranded with stomach ailments. Otherwise awesome job. Will look at your other videos.

@bob_the_bomb4508
@bob_the_bomb4508 2 года назад
There’s a slightly different philosophy for backpacking. A survival kit kit is something set aside if things go wrong and you’re separated from your main kit. It’s packed and sealed in such a way that it’s on your person at all times but not used routinely. Back in the day we used 2 oz tobacco tins that could fit in one pocket of our combat jackets. For backpacking it might be better to have what bushcrafters in the UK call a ‘possibles’ kit, which is a collection of the useful and necessary things you need to take hiking. It’s not a special kit kept sealed and separated. Put another way, a survival kit is to get you OUT of the wild: a possibles kit is the stuff you take INTO the wild. I thought this was an excellent kit though.

I would swap out the picture fram wire for some mechanics wire, picture frame wire are hell to try and make a snare out of. If you have a harbor freight anywhere near you the have small rolls of mechanics wire for .99 cents.

I’ve always used the frame wire and actually prefer it.

@porkerthepig
@porkerthepig 2 года назад
Only slight problem I can see, I put picture wire in my kit too. Unless you have a leatherman or similar it’s nearly impossible to cut down and bending it till it fatigues doesn’t really work
@NEP_Chris

I usually carry a good multitool but if I were to build this kit again, I’d just substitute bank line for the wire.
@SebastianSynn18252

This was actually gonna be the one flaw I planned to point out. I always have a multitool on my belt. But substituting the wire for bank line is an excellent idea.

No disrespect to the ranger channel I think your tin is much more usable…multiple use items 👍🇬🇧
@NEP_Chris
@NEP_Chris 2 года назад
I appreciate the compliment but his was better than mine for one HUGE reason. When I chose the tin, I never considered the fact that it had a seam. So, if I try to use it to boil water, it will definitely fail. His can was much better for that purpose. I can have all the redundant tools in the world but, if I can’t boil water for drinking, I’m screwed lol. I think he put together a solid kit. I just found a way to include a bit more.
