I've been putting off recording a video for this tune because....well it's not my favorite. It gets worn out at beginner sessions a lot of the time but it's actually a lovely tune and one that everyone needs to know.

Great... I still struggle to get this one to sound right... Are you going to do some old Trad Christmas tunes... this year ?

We'll see, I've had a few requests so I'll see what I can put together.

As a sax player newish to the whistle, my brain has such a hard time understanding using ornamentals in place of tonguing. You do it so artfully and naturally. I hope I get close some day

Hard for me to follow, wish there was some tabs for the basic tune

This tune is pretty popular so I imagine there are tabs out there someplace - I never used tabs so I don't really know much about them myself, but the sheet music is in the description if that helps. Cheers!

I’m going to sound like an old crank, but if you want to read music for Irish traditional tunes, ditch tab and go with standard notation in treble clef. Tab is guitar centric and these tunes were created for fiddle or tin whistle. There are tons of versions on a site called “ The Session” - but all are in standard notation. My wonderful teacher got me to put away written music and learn the tune first by listening. I can have written music if I transcribe it myself - which I have learned to do. Good luck! This music is a lifelong adventure.

I struggle to get the heartbeat in this tune. I play it, but I don't feel it, if that makes sense.

What are your thoughts on working variations in during sessions? I've gotten strange looks for playing the same roll on high G you play in the A part instead of the standard gdd. Love the tutorial though, always good to see fresh variations on some of the beginner tunes

Well, I'm a variations guy. That's one of my favorite parts of this music and I'm fortunate to play with people who (for the most part) feel the same way. It's one of those things like starting tunes, making new sets, different settings, etc. that are a part of the umbrella of session etiquette and so you have to decide if you want to risk the stink eye. :)

Variations may not always fit, but rolling the tonic note of a chord or playing an octave-popped note doesn't interfere with melodic flow at all. If you get a nasty look from someone who plays the same thing every time through a tune, consider it a compliment! ;)

Thank you for another great video. I like the way you break the tunes into segments.
