OMG! I'm a 21 year old stripper living in Dallas, Tx. And this is my deep dark secret: Im OBSESSED with anything King Arthur. I mean it. 100% obsessed. I've studied everything from the ancient religions of Brittain to the Celtic/ Druid/Pagan/Pict/Saxon mythology just to understand certain key figures in the story, their motivations, ect (which is hard to do because the druids never wrote anything down). From James Frazier's _The Golden Bough_ (an *essential* add to anyone interested in a good read on relevant comparitive religions and the aforementioned mythologies). I learned how to properly sketch the beautiful architecture of old cathedrals just so I could try and recreate my models of all the possible Camelots. I love anything and everything to do with King Arthur! (i recommend reading The Mists of Avalon to anyone wanting to start as well as The Once and Future King)

King Arthur never existed. The accepted belief amongst historians and archaeologists is that "Arthur" was probably a Romman Britain commander. ""King Arthur" is an imaginary character created by poets/writers to glorify/glamorize that era in history, which was pretty damn bleak tbh

During the dark ages this place was litarally the source of tin for all surrounding the mediteranian. The main import and export for britain. Amazing! ✌

Richard of Cornwall. Bloody legend. Second son of King John and a colourful figure during the 13th Century. Probably the richest man in Europe. Built Tintagel Castle to connect Arthurian legends. Went on crusade, though more of a virtue signal as he fought no battles and negotiated peace. Opposed Simon De Montfort before it was cool, and rebelled against him. Tried a weak power grab to acquire Poitou, but was thwarted. He bribed the electoral princes in Germany, and managed to wag himself Emperor. Though as King of the Romans, he only visited the country 4 times and soon was booted out and replaced. He was the "bad miller" who hid in a windmill at the Battle of Lewes. Managed to wag himself as lord of Warminster before he suffered a crippling stroke which eventually killed him. Even then he wasn't done, as his influence on Germany created a power vacuum. What a scallywag.

I noticed that you didn’t mention the village. Tintagel is the village and tintagel castle is... well .. the castle aha. There is also the cave that is on the beach directly below the remains of the castle which has links to the legend of merlin which is why locals call it merlons cave. I go there every year as I have family living there it’s a very nice place with one of the best fudge shops in the West Country. Every morning you wake up and smell fresh fudge being made it’s the best. The whole village is said to be haunted with the main pub and the hotel being a major hotspot for the paranormal

Arthur of Camelot, serves more value as a Figure of identity and a legend of aspiration to the Brits, than he ever could have served as a man who ruled by grace and blade. A figure too large for life a man who's accomplishments and legend transcend time immemorial. And yet, he most likely never existed, and if he did.. would have been rather impressed how his tale is remembered as the ultimate fantasy fishing trope. Each retelling being more grand and noble than the last. Likely his origin is actually in Arthur the Red. And has been transcribed by a people who needed leadership from a leader grander than they ever got, and the divine strength of a king, who had the ear of the Almighty and the battle cry of a nation. Noble and great King Arthur, king of all Brits. What a wonderful tale the likes of which American Folklore could never quite muster the same majestic tone and sense of noble duty to a people, place, and time.

One quick thought about the decline of "historical" Tintagel. Tin was an essential in the production of bronze. As the Bronze Age became the Iron Age, tin would be less necessary. If the trade in tin declined, the places where tin was traded (eg Tintagel) would decline too. Maybe-possibly-perhaps?

Nice work on a hugely complicated story. Arthurian folklore grows even more interesting with the entry of Pope Alexander VI who dispatched his historian Polydore Vergil to write the "definitive" account of English history - with the help of Henry VII early 1505. A Tudor! The Anglica Historia was completed about 10 years later and roundly criticized by anyone who WASN'T a Tudor as a mere whitewash propaganda intended to diminish the long-late King Richard (and the Cornish).

Your beard is getting epic. I am jealous. I can't really grow anything that doesn't start to look like a mug shot of a drunken homeless man as it gets longer than medium on my trimmers. My cheeks are not well covered (thanks random recessive gene) either, so it looks really bad when I try and go full beard of any kind.

Simon your beard's looking real fluffy. It's kinda nice is it a quarantine thing or you're just feeling frisky?
