Excellent video- love hearing you talk about Tintin. I'm impressed at how well Herge's art holds up in black and white. The addition of all the background detail does, to my eye, change the impact of the whole comic though. It brings the feel of a real lived in world to a much higher level and makes me invest myself more in each scene. In my opinion, anytime you have more thoughts about Tintin- go ahead and make a video!

Discovering that Tintin had earlier, black and white versions was a mind blowing thing for me (It wasn't that long ago!) and excavating these changes and adjustments to things so deeply entrenched in my mind from childhood has been quite a wonderful process. To know that sharing what I see continues that process brings the purest satisfaction! I completely agree with you - Herge's older stuff holds up pretty well, and I really enjoy the black and white. But just like you, I love the level of background detail and craftsmanship that came into the later adventures (and was inserted into the earlier ones). They add literal depth, putting me in that time and place, and I cannot imagine the series without them!
The redrawing of the figures was, interestingly, restricted to the first few pages, after which Herge decided he could just go with the original drawings for the colorisation, embellishing only the backgrounds. You can see the stark difference in the modern edition where Tintin suddenly appears shorter, with pointy shoes and a more rounded head for the rest of the story. And about the large redrawn rickshaw panel - it was all Herge's work, not his assistants yet. :) And now we wait another lifetime for your next Tintin video. :P

This is something that had puzzled me a lot when I first read the blue lotus. It was such a drastic shift in appearance from the tintin we saw in the redrawn Cigars of the Pharaoh then to this sets of panels of Blue Lotus.
I think I recall from somewhere that the album was first redrawn rather early on while Herge's style was still similar, and the first pages in modern prints are the result of a second redraw that was abandoned.

Another great Tintin vid and very informative as usual. Love the splash panels in the original. I remember thinking as a boy that id read all the Tintin books, as here in the UK you only had 16 books on the back cover in the late 70s. Imagine my surprise when this was released in the early 80s in the UK and it was originally published before anything I had already read. Mind was blown and I loved it.
Thank you! And I had a very similar experience - no back cover of any of the albums I read featured the Blue Lotus and I had no idea it existed, because Methuen hadn't brought it out in English. Then one day I saw a copy, thought it was new, and realized it was older! I talk a little bit about those back covers and trying to navigate that pre-internet in my 'Tintin in the East' video, and I may still have one album with just the 16/17 books you mention! 😁

Ah, the Tintin comparison saga continues! I don't really have much to say here other than again noting for myself that I need to pick up some Tintin comics and do some reading. I've not read any Tintin since I was a small child (if I remember correctly) - and I might be misremembering, maybe I only watched the animated TV series... in which case I haven't read any Tintin at all! Great stuff as always, well done sir!
Reading Tintin is so different from most other reading for me, because as a child I read each adventure over and over again. In fact, most of the things I read as a child I read over and over again because I wasn't getting new books every week, but some of them couldn't hold up to the intense scrutiny. The Tintin books could, however, and they rewarded re-reading and provided a deep satisfaction of familiarity, be it with the world, characters, or the separate plots of the books. That is why finding out that the earliest ones originally looked very different from what I know and loved was such a mind blowing discovery for me, and why I really enjoy making these little comparisons. I think it would be great to know what you think of Tintin as an adult, unfettered perhaps by the amount of nostalgia I invariably am! 😁
Always love watching your takes on the Tintin comics! It's really fascinating to see Herge's evolution as an artist and storyteller. He gets so much better at setting the atmosphere of the locations in the background details, and even his use of panel structure itself gets noticeably better (Picaros being the perfect example, where the camera angles are practically like a live action film). I'm curious about whether you've read the Quick and Flupke comics. I remember seeing a few copies of them in a bookstore in Mumbai about a decade ago but haven't seen them anywhere since. As someone who has ran out of Tintin books to read, they seem like a good substitute for that void lol.

And I absolutely agree with you on how masterfully Herge's style matures (and how quickly!) over the years, and I remember being very confused in my childhood as to how the person who drew Picaros was the same person who drew America, and I was only looking at the redrawn editions! There's also a 'modularity' to the adventures that I think comes from their varying forms of serialization (some by the page, some by the row or dual rows of panels) that I think is wholly unique. Just a few weeks ago I got my very first Quick and Flupke book, a gift from a viewer (as documented in my recent mail-time livestream) but I have not yet cracked it open. I remember reading one Jo Zette and Jocko book in my childhood but other than that it's just been returns to the Tintin well for my Herge fix! 😁
@@ftloc Yeah I noticed that too as I got older. Even the pacing improved a lot. Early adventures had Tintin jumping from one sticky situation to another so that each segment of the story seemed "exciting" to readers when serialized but he gradually got more comfortable with letting them breathe in calmer moments. There's just so much to talk about when it comes to analysing these comics.
Somehow I find the early versions of Tintin adventures so alluring and lovely. I believe there are French editions that allows the reader to compare both versions. Can you confirm if this early version was published in landscape format? It’s clear that Hergé and his studio heavily modified the initial layout, sometimes more than once.
I agree with you on the charm of the earlier, looser style, but the redrawn versions, being what I grew up with and re-read hundreds of times, are too firmly etched into my brain! I believe that the original serialization was in two page segments, but the redrawn versions and later stories were definitely serialized ALSO in landscape format - often a single row running as a daily strip. I've seen several such newspaper printings myself and I know there are landscape format editions of books like The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun, even in English!
A great video, as always :) An interesting observation I had from my childhood days. In the redrawn version there are 2 very different art styles. When tintin is in india there is a certain style, but once he comes to China, the style changes, more like the old versions of tintin. But the large market place picture in China reverts from the "China" style to the "India" style. :)

I couldn't figure out when it was set, when it was created and why the style varied so much! 😁 I think what you have noted is absolutely correct - there must have been some pages Herge and his assistants touched more than others, and you can see that most in the India sections!
This is pretty neat seeing all the changes. I really like the art on the Casterman cover. I think I prefer the background on the redrawn edition, with the black dragon on the red background, but I like the way Tintin and the vase look in the original with more detail, shading, and a different design on the vase.
I just got the black and white version of the blue lotus yesterday. Thanks to your reviews making us aware of these editions. Now hoping to find the other black and white editions. They are being tough to find though

There aren't that many more, at least in English, but I could definitely continue this series with one of the smaller French editions I show in another video. I just need to get my technical skills levelled up to shoot and edit between a tight zoom and a wider shot 😝

A remarkable explanation of the differences between the two versions. I really like these two albums but there are two things that have always shocked me. 1 - The change of style of the first pages in the color version. By the time this happens (leaf 5), I find it ugly. After that I get used to it and of course I find the album very beautiful. 2- The coming of Rastapopoulos. For me, it's impossible that he survived his fall. The end of Cigars of the Pharaoh, which keeps the identity of the leader of the gang a secret is perfect for me. Rastapopoulos doesn't add anything to the story of the Blue Lotus.
Thank you! And I know - the 'shift' in style was confusing but something, like you, that I quickly get used to. As for Rastapopulous, while surviving a fall is sort of classic now (see also Sherlock Holmes! 😊) I guess I also expect a return of a mysterious figure when it was never revealed who they were. But I have to agree that his identity or reveal isn't nearly as important or impactful as it needs to be in this story. Especially since he just volunteers away his secret. I do love him as a character later on in the series, though, so I'm glad he sticks around!

But unlike you, I don't like the character of Rastapopoulos (I think he's the only one I don't like). In the two other albums where he performs, he is a little ridiculous and it's hard to believe that he was such a powerful bandit of the Cigars. Okay, so I'm going to keep checking out your videos. Yay!! I always love these Tintin comparison videos. :) I got my first Tintin B&W Facsimile about a month ago (Cigars of the Pharaoh), and I’m hoping to eventually collect all nine!! That’ll be quite the adventure 😄 In my search, I also found that Éditions Moulinsart is currently colourizing - and for the first time publishing - the original versions of Land of the Soviets - Crab with the Gold Claws! It appears they published the colourized version of Soviets back in 2017 (though a rather thorough search for an English language version has led me to believe it was printed exclusively in French) and while I’ve seen references to a colourized Tintin in the Congo in 2019, it appears to me that it may have only been published in French, in lithograph form. I found this to be really fascinating, but was absolutely chuffed when I found that the colourized version of Tintin in America had just recently been published, and have since been able to get my hands on it! As a fellow Tintin enthusiast/collector, I was curious to hear your thoughts on all this, and whether you had heard of this as well, and or were considering making a video about it. Cheers! 😁

The Collectors Editon of Congo, brought out by Casterman, is a colour edition and I think the only one available these days (I could be wrong!) Soviets I have never seen in colour form at all, interesting to know there is one in French! I think whenever I do another Tintin edition comparison, I may have to go to one of the tiny French copies I have - I believe I'm now out of full-size facsimiles (other than Congo, I suppose). I tried Rakshak but it wasn't my cup of tea. Odayan, on the other hand, was quite interesting. I'm looking forward to the next chapter! And I'll definitely feature more independent Indian comics and anthologies in future spotlights!

When I was around 10 years old the school library had Tintin books. I picked Blue Lotus as the first one to read. It became my favorite. I don't know why I picked it first.
Interesting comparison for someone like me who didn’t read the b&w early versions of Tintin. Around 6:50, about the famous scene in the street. If i’m not mistaken Hergé got help from his long time friend Tchang for some details about Chinese calligraphy for the coloured edition. As you may know when Hergé got his studios and started to «restore/update» his albums he got a lot of help from his collaborators. To name a few Bob de Moor and Edgar P.Jacobs. For example de Moor went to England to make sketches for the new «Black Island» album to update some scenes. De Moor was probably the artist that was able to «copy» perfectly the style of Hergé, so it was really easy for Hergé to take de Moor sketches and make the final drawings with his own style. De Moor was also doing technical drawings like cars, buildings, etc ( he draw the plane of «Flight 714»). Jacobs was the father of the series «Blake and Mortimer» and he helped Hergé with colours for the Tintin albums. For instance he helped a lot for the album «King Ottokar’s Sceptre» (in a ballroom scene Jacob and Hergé make a cameo).

I've been finding out more and more as the years go by - as a child, I knew only the later, colour versions of every adventure, and thought it was one man doing everything! I do mention Jacobs and Bob De Moor a little bit in other videos of mine, and take a close look at two later Black Island versions as well, along with videos on America, and Cigars of the Pharaoh. Another commenter here mentioned that in The Blue Lotus all of the redrawing was by Herge himself though; his associates started helping him after 1946. And another friend of mine has actually illuminated me that it was Roger Leloup, not Bob Demoor who did the plane in Flight 714, alongside other planes and vehicles throughout. Would you be able to confirm that?
@@ftloc I was right to assume that you knew a lot about Hergé ;-) Yes the studio itself has an interesting story because when you think of it Hergé was a sort of Walt Disney, creating his characters, this empire around Tintin. I confirm, after a little bit of research, that Roger Leloup drew the plane of «flight 714». Actually Leloup was known as "the aeronautical expert in the Studios". Getting back to De Moor he took the position of assistant when Jacobs left to work on his own series. Bob de Moor et la méthode de travail de Hergé aux Studios (copy/paste this title on RU-vid) In this video of Bob de Moor and Hergé's working method at the Studios you will see the way drawings where made. Basically it shows De Moor getting rough sketches from Hergé. De Moor refines the drawings by adding precisions and details in the surroundings (like specific plants he had in photos). Then the pencils drawings gets back to Hergé who will put it’s final touch by inking them. (I know that Hergé had problems with his hands at one point. Following this fact, I cannot confirm whether De Moor would have done the final inking himself on some pages). It’s the sort of details that could be in a biography. A few years back a very good one was published and a detail in the content shocked a few fans because it was said that Hergé didn’t like children! For Jacobs it’s interesting to note that, unlike Hergé, he gave the ok to continue «Blake & Mortimer» after his death. I think there is quite a few albums published now. The editor alternates with two duets of authors (a designer and a screenwriter), it seems to work because albums are published. Of course, although the drawings are in the style of Jacobs, there is a slight difference in the rendering. (Too bad DeMoor couldn’t have drawn the last album of Hergé (Alph’art) because if there was an artist to do it it was him). Cheers!

As special editions, with smaller print runs and enhanced production, yes, they were more expensive than the regular editions, but I don't even know if the English editions are available any more. As for if they're worth buying, I leave that for people to decide for themselves, and hopefully the videos I've made on a bunch of them help in some way. I like pictures like that fourth plate where, it's a piece of art, that has other pieces of art within it. so not only did Herge draw the picture itself, but had to come up with designs for the artwork within his own artwork. As an artist too, that kind of thing always fascinates me.
Absolutely! And in another video I glance at the reference materials (and anecdotes of his friend Chang contributing characters for signage etc) that went into this.
Great overview of the books! I'm fairly sure the first four pages are the only ones that are fully redrawn in the colour version, and it's only from then onwards that character drawings from the original B&W are used with backgrounds sometimes being altered (and occasionally characters). If you look carefully, Tintin's appearance in the first four pages is his newer look from the redrawn Cigars of the Pharaoh.
Exactly this was brought to my attention just an hour or so ago in another comment! No wonder there's been this whiplash all my life 😁 To add to that, another comment pointed out, the redrawn Tintin appears for one panel in Shanghai! I may have to go back and do a Cigars to Lotus transition comparison, but by that time I'd have niched myself down to five viewers interested! Thanks so much for the note, and the edification!

I got all of these many years ago, just on Amazon and Infibeam. Unfortunately, they seem harder to find these days. Still, worth checking in from time to time to see if they've been reprinted! Good luck!
From what I have been able to find out, Tintin albums in English were imported into India at least as early as 1970 1971. The Bengali magazine Anandamela serialzed translated Tintin adventures starting in 1975. Translated albums followed in later years.
I didn't know about redrawing of tintin comic. I have only seen redrawn version. Also this reminded me of what Dark Horse did with Blade of the immortal.
Yes, it wasn't until only a few years ago that I realized that the first nine Tintin adventures had been redrawn to the forms I was more familiar with! I have no idea what happened with Blade - the publisher got the work redrawn? At least here it was the artist himself, or collaborators under his direct supervision, who were doing this...
@@ftloc on request of Blade of immortal creator Dark Horse flipped all the pages (to make it read like western comic). This made few pages with onomatopoeia look odd. So dark horse cut those pages/panels and adjusted onomatopoeia to keep the flow of the manga intact. You can find few flipped swastika marks due to this.
They used to be back when I got them many years ago, but seem to have become hard to find in recent times. I hope they get reprinted sometimes soon, and that they continue with the series!

Hello. Can you please do a quick video comparing different edition of dark knight return, locke and key and v for vendetta. There are more i cant remember right now. I can only afford 1 edition😂 of them each.
Great suggestions, but I may not have enough editions in-hand to do a comparison! Let me see what I can come up with but in the meantime: For Locke and Key I would recommend the Master Editions, for the Dark Knight Returns I am partial to the slipcased set of four slim hardcovers (unless you can get the original issues) and V for Vendetta - well, if you can afford it, I would say go for the Absolute, but there's something very charming about the yellowed paper of my TPB for this story, but maybe that is just nostalgia. 😊
It's very hard to be absolutely sure, at least for me, but the colour facsimiles are supposed to be replications of the original colours over the (often) adjusted later editions.

The first nine were; The Shooting Star was the first colour album and the first nine were drawn/ recoloured at the time of various editions, sometimes the English edition, whose audiences were familiar with later adventures (like the Moon and Unicorn stories) before they got to know of the earlier ones (because they were translated later). Interesting thought! For the most though, I really love the later, detailed style - it's a formative part of the adventures for me, and crucial to how many times I re-read them (I keet finding new things in the pages!) I wouldn;t mind seeing them at half the panels per page though! 😁 Giant Herge art !

Is great to watch your video comparisions. I have the old version and the actual version of "L'oreille casée" in catalan lenguage (I'm from Barcelona) and the old version have an entire sequence of a Tintin's dream that not exist in the actual version of the comic book. I want to recommend you "Johan et Pirlouit" comic books by peyó, "Marsupilami" by Franquin and "Les aventures de Chick Bill" by Tibet.

@@pareekatti The facsimiles of America, Cigars and Lotus have been quite readily available (though not as much as the regular editions of course) since their recent Last Gasp / Casterman reissue. It's the others (Soviets, Congo, and the Egmont colour facsimiles until Ottokar's) that are a lot harder to find (in English) at the moment. Though I wouldn't be surprised if at least the colour facsimiles were reissued again - I believe they would have a good number of buyers.

If you're budget conscious, you can wait for a steep price drop like I did - they do happen often. :) I bought them for not much more than their regular album prices. PS - If I may say so - Amazon (India or anywhere else) is the worst place to look for Tintin and other bandes desinees. Artificial rarity and hugely inflated prices.
I love these facsimile editions. It's unfortunate that the English versions stopped at The Blue Lotus. Still, I think I'm going to have to get the rest in French. I just find them too fascinating to not have in my collection.

Haha fair enough. Since I first read these books as a kid, I loved the villain being made a buffoon and being ridiculed. And I know people don't like it as much, but I am a fan of Flight 714 and the Rastapopulous/Carriedas truth battle will always hold a soft spot in my heart! 😊
It may feature in a list video or two, but despite how much it blew me away in my younger years, over the years I've found its appeal lessening as a story. Who knows, I may change my mind one day? But right now there are just SO MANY videos I want to make! 😁
@@bitroast I'd agree with that fully. I don't like it when older colouring becomes absolutely unavailable in any form in print, as has happened with a few DC titles now. I believe even the deluxe is new colours only, but the Absolute has both the old and the new, if I am not mistaken, much like Batman Year One? Luckily I have it collected in the earliest edition of the DC Stories of Alan Moore, from which, it has now been removed!
Actually have to disagree with you here, I prefer the Boat Scenes going from India to China, especially the map panel, gives it more of a High Adventure feel.
I don't think the Tintin books are overtly racist. Every character in the books regardless of race, including whites. is a caricature. King Ottokars Scepter has caricatures of Eastern European people. The Black Island has caricatures of Scottish people, Prisoners Of The Sun has South American caricatures etc. And Herges strongest life long friendship was with a Chinese boy, Chang. That would be strange indeed if he was racist.
It is strange the 4 first pages set in India were redrawn to the more modern and evolved style, while the rest, set in China, remains in the old primitive style.
Have you done a video on EC archives by darkhorse yet? I would love to hear you talk about the reprints. I am confused about which one to collect, gemstone or darkhorse.
I only have 7 or 8 volumes of the Gemstone editions, which are excellent. I knew that someone had finished the series (I thought it was IDW, but as you point out it is Dark Horse) but I have not yet gotten my hands on any of those. At this point I think the Gemstone volumes (which were never completed) are harder to get, but from what I can see, Dark Horse has done a good job maintaining the same production specifications. But of course I can't tell first hand, sorry!
