I'm loving all of these videos! I'm loving the research, I've read Pierre Assouline's biography of Herge, is there any others you'd recommend?

We’ve been referencing The Real Hergé by Sian Lye. And I’d really recommend Tintin: Hergé and his Creation by the late Great Harry Thompson (no relation to the Twins). Thanks for watching!

Miss seeing you guys talking Tintin. Is there ANY hope you might pick up on this again and cover some as-yet-non-covered aspect of the world of Tintin? I'd hate to have another Covid-type event have to come about in order to get you guys doing more videos! (And I also realized, watching this, that I never sent you my never-seen Tintin "thing" I said i was going to send a couple years ago. Guess I'll have to track down where to send one to each of you. Fun watching this again. This is the book I recall the least about. Probably due to fact I live in the US and don't find it all that interesting. Not really exotic like the others.

in the end of the story with the banquet where he is kidnapped, i think that next to rastapuous, sits hollywoodstar Rita Hayworth. i think i read it in the complete companion by michael farr. Al Capone, rita hayworth + a journalist in the flight 714 is 3 authentic persons appearing in this comicbooks.. i will not include the arms dealer from the broken ear, since he was given another name, but based on the real person. Given that Tintin interrupts Rastapopulous film in the dessert in then next book, we can assume the he was in America to find investors to his movie project and also to find ways to extend his narcotic gang..

Ahh! I was aware of Al Capone, but I hadn’t realised it was Rita Hayworth at the banquet.

Very nice and observant chat. I just read these books for the first time this past year, tho I first came across them for sale in the US in/around 1960-ish (I should say that I DID read DESTINATION MOON because I thought it was a tie-in with the 1950 George Pal film, DESTINATION MOON. Well, it obviously featured a lot of references to the film, but it was its own thing.) Tintin is really a whole new world of charming inventive adventure full of fun and colorful characters. I'm surprised those books never really caught on in the US. Thanks for the talk. Good wishes.

Yes - interesting that they weren’t bigger in the US. I guess they feel quite European. I remember Tintin getting an honourable mention in an early episode of The Simpsons though. Glad you enjoyed our musings!

Excellent review! I've always had a special fondness for this one, as it was the first Tintin book I ever read. I agree that the oil bit was good commentary on the removal of the American Indian; even as a kid, I thought that scene was pretty powerful. My only complain about this one is that Bobby Smiles was caught too early. The main gangster Tintin pursues afterwards seems underwhelming compared to the great Smiles. However, this book features one of my all time favorite minor characters in the sleazy detective that "helps" find Snowy. I especially like when he reappears toward the end; just the idea that he of all people is the go-to guy that the town recruits to help find Tintin. Incredible. And now to Egypt...

Haha! Yes, we love Bobby Smiles - great name! It’s indeed a shame he doesn’t make it past page 43! Mike MacAdam, pet detective, is genius too.
