The Itsy, Bitsy Apartment with Huge Design Ideas, How to design a small space, Scott remembers how he and Rebecca decorated his tiny 300 sq ft. apartment in Chicago last year. Rebecca and Greyson take off for another out of state project and continue working on design plans for the resort in Utah and Robeson Design's version of "Doomsday Preppers". Season 2 of Driven to Design is bursting with great Design projects working on beautiful homes, designing hotels, underground shelters, roof top terraces in luxury homes, Game rooms, Living rooms, Kitchen designs, Bedroom designs, Room Tours and more. Follow along with us for more awesome Design Ideas each week and of course, more family and office antics!
Rebecca shows you how to decorate with style on a budget using IKEA furniture.
Paint colors are carefully selected and placement is well thought out to maximize the space visually. Bold color on the walls, even in a temporary space like a rented apartment can make all the difference in the world! Use of inexpensive art pieces along with colorful books and accessories can liven up a tiny space and add warmth and personality to your home. Mirrors on cabinets can make them "go away" visually and carefully chosen furniture pieces can add much needed storage in a tiny apartment.

I like how you used one short bookcase next to the taller one instead of just all tall, it feels so much more open. That table shape for the space was GENIUS!

For me the cleverest thing in the design was finding that place for the dining table. I would never have thougt to 'extend' that wall fuildly into the dining table. Awesome!
@di4085

I was quite intrigued and fascinated by how the shape of the table extends out from the wall to a point that you'rer able to walk around it. The widest part of the table actually flows with the width of the bookcase.

Very nice! The only thing that seemed weird was the floor shelves behind the sectional couch. the bottom shelves are not even accessible. Maybe some nice hanging shelves instead so the couch can be against the wall and give that room a more open feeling, and more storage/deco display
@rebeccarobeson1
@rebeccarobeson1 8 лет назад
+jemohseni Good attention to detail Jemohseni! The issue was a floor radiator that was in the way of pushing the sofa all the way to the wall. The narrow bookcase filled in the awkward space left and provided a flat surface for the sofa. We knew the bookcase would not be easily accessible so we stored Scotts Christmas decorations in that location. Had there been more time I think I would have added casters to the base so it could be easily rolled out when necessary. Thats what happens when you have 3 days to transform a space :-/. Thanks for leaving the comment. We love hearing the feedback from our viewers :-) RR

i guess i'm too obsessed with her designs that i can still not see what you're pointing out. where is it exactly??
@inkpen9547
@inkpen9547 7 лет назад
Personally I don't like sofas that are pushed to the wall, unless there's no other option. But, even then, I prefer to see a little air between the furniture and wall. It gives the room more dimension and style in my opinion. In the case of Scott's apartment it seems like pushing it to the wall would look so basic. Because it sits out, it appears more cozy and balanced. Of course most people prefer everything to look bigger, larger, and wider, even if it's not as appealing or looks like everyone else's house.
@caroline10081
@caroline10081 5 лет назад
I prefer floor shelves behind couches and beds. I leave the bottom shelves empty or if there's room to easily move the couch/bed, I would put stuff I don't use very often. The problem with hanging shelves over a couch or bed is that they encroach on our head space. It feels as if the shelves are looming over us instead of merely floating.

I always like how professionals get things like an orange accent wall to be the same color as one piece of furniture and then get matching little accessories in the same color. Normal people don't get that polished look. I guess its because we buy stuff over long periods of time / don't have the discipline to stick to the palate and just buy what's on sale or what we like. Well that's me anyway.

Ms. Rebecca you are to funny. I LOL out loud when you said you went out to the neighborhood and cut the flowers. It reminded me of a time when I visited North Carolina in the Spring and beautiful colorful Tulips were everywhere. Since they were everywhere, I decided to pick a few during my walk one morning :) When I returned to my friends home from my walk and showed her my bouquet of tulips; she asked where I got them from and I told her that I picked them during my walk. She laughed so hard and said I was truly blessed because people are killed for tampering with flowers. So I just laughed at you son's response. Too funny. I love your channel and keep up the good work.

My favorite part was when Scott walked in, seeing his smiling face and having a son of my own, that was priceless. I loved the color scheme. Also, by using tall bookcases, the tall kitchen cabinets and even the large sectional, surprisingly made the place look larger rather than smaller! I don't know how you do it but everything came together fabulously! PS: how do you manage to put Ikea furniture together and make it look so effortlessly???

So glad to see you are painting a wall Whataburger Orange, I did that once on one wall in my living room, it matched a color in the fabric of my sofa, but it was too much, almost everyone that saw it grew silent, when my husband got home from his trip, he was smart enough to simply say it looked like I’d done a lot of work!!!! 😂 The color looks so much better in Scott’s place!!!! The last time I painted that wall, which by the way was heavily textured, I painted it gloss black, which made it look like slate, then I had floor to ceiling, wall to wall opened back book cases built on that wall, everyone that saw the wall and book cases loved it. I loved it too.

I moved from my family home in NY, which wasn't huge, 1200 sqft plus attic & basement to a 500 sqft condo in Greece, which seemed really tiny to me & then I see Scott's which is about half the size and can't believe how beautiful you made it all!! I needed your help back then! :) The whole apartment is awesome, but love where you put the table, I would've never thought of that, so clever! Enjoying watching your videos & hopefully I can get some ideas for our new condo which is double the size of our old one, but I'm limited as we're renting this. Needed to upgrade when my Dad died so my Mom could move in with us as 500 sqft wasn't enough room.

I really like the use of warm colors. Usually guys rooms are cold dark blue or grey or all black. This one is inviting space, energetic and even the gigantic sofa looks cool. Small spaces are the most fun to design (out of my own experience), they are the most challenging where you need to think outside of the box. I love small spaces. Actually a lot of it kind of looks familiar to how I was trying to fit storage into a small room and not overwhelm it.

Have you seen this video where this guy's parents disowned him for being gay and kicked him out of the house. Search "How not to react when your child tells you that he's gay" on RU-vid. You'll agree why i said that. Not many people are lucky to have an awesome mom that supports their child for being gay.
@KellyBrito
@KellyBrito 10 лет назад
Sandy Koong But Sandy, loving a child is the natural thing to do. Kicking a kid out for being gay means the parents never really loved the kids, and are disturbed humans. Therefore, loving your kid when he says he is gay, makes no parent special at all. Hating a kid for being gay, makes a parent as good as garbage.

Disagree. There would have been limited space regardless. What's she's done is make it functional and incorporated everything he needed while making it homely.

This design is so amazing! Not only do I see the happiness and love the two of you share in creating a beautiful space, I also see it in your personal interaction with one another....very beautiful to see between mom and son!

Love this video! I just moved into a new place and this reminded me so much of when my mom came over! I love these small apartment videos because nyc apartments are mostly tiny!

How lucky your kids are to have you as their mom! I love the way that you took this design challenge on - and made it look spectacular! My favorite things are the orange painted walls that you did - and how you were able to squeeze the sectional sofa into the space and set up the entertainment center area. The dining table is so cute! I love the orange accents all around the apartment - and the bedroom is a really good use of space while extremely stylish and cozy! Great job! A wonderful inspiration for a smaller condo or apartment! Love it!

That was a really episode. Mother and son team, very sweet and charming. so glad to see Mrs. Robeson able to decorate a space with IKEA goods and made the space look down to earth and not so glam, glam. Thank you for showing me your talents.

Ha! Great family dialog at 2:56 - Rebecca: "Well, here, let's put [the camera] toward me, and then we'll be fine…" Scott: "Mom, stop."

The first thing I noticed was the windows. Scandinavian design means bare windows. Jimmy's house has no curtains or blinds. Personally, I hate bare windows because I love privacy, which means curtains and blinds. But if you crave lots of light, Scandinavian is the way to go.

I love the table you were able to fit at the end of the dividing wall and next to the shelves. Also, I thought the panels for the shower curtain added a very classy touch and added symmetry :-) LOVED it!!

I live in 450 sq ft that has an entry hall -- 5 rooms in 450 sq ft and that includes a flue in the middle of it too. I don't think people recognize the challenge is really a lot of fun because you have to be creative, and when you do something that ends up this good its really a feeling of accomplishment and pride of place.

Haha… I know, me too. I’d say Scott’s Chicago apartment is a classic for me… kinda like Joeys bedroom… one of my first youtube videos of all time. Some things are just good regardless the year it was posted. Thanks so much for digging through the archives to find some of my oldies but goodies 👍🏻

WOW!!! I've been obsessed with watching your RU-vid Tutorials for a while now!! You have such a beautiful style!!!! The way you transformed this apartment is my most favorite yet!!!! The colors are so beautiful and cozy!!! I love the way you put the bookcases from smaller to larger making the room look bigger as appose to all 3 bookcases the same height. My favorite items are the glass vase looking objects sitting on the book case item sitting on the book shelf. I would have NEVER thought about that shaped table -- or even putting one in!! - I love that!!! You make me laugh! - You’re so daring!! You took tulips! Haha! I can't wait to watch some more!!!

I have to say that besides the fact that I love your videos because you are so very talented, I am really impressed how you treat people from the electrician, to the owners, to a helper. I think the respect that you have for people ia part of your success.

I think it's great that you took on a small place like this apartment. Too often the big budget TV shows will only cast large rooms and although I can understand from a production standpoint, I always think it's a cheap way out.

Really didn’t think that orange wall was going to work and I was like that’s kind of harsh but then when you did the reveal it was absolutely stunning! Thank you for showing me how to think outside the box. Too bad apartments in my area don’t let you paint walls.
