We had a Robin for 14 years. My husband found him when he was fuzz. We taught him to eat, drink and tried to help him to fly, he finally did. So when the time came for him to leave and be on his own, we let him go. He would come up to the windows and pick at the glass until we would go out and he would come up to us. I put the cage outside to see if he would get back into it, and he did. I would sit the cage outside and one day a female came and sat on the cage and she would feed him bugs, this went on the whole summer, she came back the following year and did the same thing. This Robin would mimic my whistle and would talk, he could say his name, "JR" and say pretty bird and did wolf whistles. Everyone loved JR. Back in 2015, JR passed away. He is missed, the joy that little bird gave us was great, and he was spoiled, everyone made over him, he would sit on our arm and loved it.

Pretty sure this girl bird-napped a fledgling, almost 90% certain based on appearance and how spirited (not malnourished, meaning mama watching and feeding from afar) the robin was. You can't justify interfering by only waiting 5 hours, you come back the next day and look for signs of mom's return. Birds take days on the ground to fly, fledglings look old but they're just big babies. This girl clearly saw an opportunity to connect with a cute animal (who wouldn't) but she really should have stopped after finding a safe spot for the bird.
@JayGilby
@JayGilby 3 года назад
Also you can't "leave food", birds need predigested and freshly regurgitated diets from their mom.

Good on the dog for not eating the birdie. A grown-up bird got stuck in our furnace once, and our cat "saved" it by hunting it and inadvertently letting us know it was there; we let it out, of course

She interrupted the bird learning to fly. Fledglings sometimes spend days on the ground, strengthening their muscles as they struggle to fly. Their mom watches from a distance and feeds them while avoiding danger, aka scary human with camera. Clearly wasn't abandoned judging by how spirited and not malnourished they were.

I did this with a family of Blue Jays. The parents would feed them through the bird cage I provided because they fell out of their nest. I left the top off so parents could get inside the cage. Had brought them in and had them learn how to fly and when they were ready to leave the cage they flew out on their own. It was a beautiful experience to go through.

When I was little we took care of a sparrow with a broken wing. A few years ago a sparrow flew into my front door and he was freezing. So I called the natural history museum thinking they could tell me what to do. I had brought the bird in to try to warm him up. They told me to put the bird in a pile of leaves. He flew to the next door neighbor's fence, turned, chirped a thanks and flew away. What a high knowing I helped the bird. Another bird was next to my outside air conditioner soaked as it had rained. I dried him off and he flew away.

Very touching. Some years ago we had a very similar experience. A baby robin fell out of the nest and landed hard on the sidewalk. We didn't think he'd make it, but he eventually picked himself up and hopped off the sidewalk into the yard. It rained that night and we couldn't bring him in, so I put a table over him to keep him dry. Once he survived the night we just kept an eye on him, helping feed him while the parents did the same in shifts. Gave him water with a syringe, saved him from a snake, chased him all over the yard to keep him from going into the street, etc. Eventually taught him to fly in the same manner, but he was scared of heights and if I got him in the air and stepped back he'd target me and fly over for a landing. Had to get him off the roof once because he flew up there and didn't know how to get back down on his own.

Doing the same darn thing. Baby nestling robin we named Sophie! She’s just staring to learn everything. I found her on a walk and she at first was very lethargic, so I contacted a pro songbird rehabber and she instructed me to purée hard boiled egg yolks, mixed with purified water to make a soup like consistency, then give it to her in a 1 ml syringe every 45 min. They sleep through the night at this age. Also Pureed blueberries or Gerber’s chicken baby food with a little water to make less thick… never release them until they have learned how to care for themselves. It’s best to give these babies to a licensed songbird rehabber when the reach adolescence.❤

Remember Most robins actually are on the ground for a few weeks before hey can fly This is when they teach them to look for bugs on the ground Pretty cute We have a family of doves that I feed and give water too When they have babies it’s the best time of the year!!
