Tiny Core Linux 11 - Super Lightweight for Old Systems

Tiny Core Linux comes in 3 sizes - an 11MB, 16MB and 106MB ISO size. Its 32bit only and is a good candidate for very old computers. Although my preference is AntiX.
Tiny Core has a very limited software library.

I swear there used to be a time a 1Ghz cpu was considered crazy fast and that I've seen windows 98/2000 perform much better on those than most linux-based alternatives today :/

Well, 1 GHZ was lightning fast for a system that could do everything in the past.... Windows 2000 for the win.

I have a love hate relationship with this os. In 2016 I was doing a certificate III in game programming and they "taught us how to install Linux" and made us install tiny core. It is my first distro but after installing it I thought Linux is extremely hard, getting internet and audio to work was a pain.

You're not limited to the pkg manager. You can install rpm binaries, tho it helps if they don't have too many dependancies.. :)

I have a atom netbook from the year 2008 which is ridiculously slow with any newer "lightweight" distro. For example. It takes 4+ seconds to open a terminal in those distros. So I will be trying this in the future and see if it is an improvement

I use Coreplus 10 on my ancient ACER 1GB RAM, works ok as a project but prefer Puppy Linux (Xenial 7.5) 32 bit and 64 bit.

I had downloaded and ran both Core.iso terminal and Tiny Core.iso gui off a flash drive on a ibm t500 with no hard drive and I was not able to link and mount the cd drive to the operating system to store files and text documents on cd. It would show sr0 or something like that on the mount program, but it won't recognise it. All it would do is rev up the cd drive and not read the cd. I don't know if it had anything to do with it not having the hard drive.
@SinsBird

No, it has nothing to do with hard drive. When you encounter a problem in linux, don't hesitate to ask on forums for help.

I am a user of AntiX as well. I find the amount of work they've put it to be very useful and impressive. But, I will have to look into this distro now.
@derekfrost8991

You can't compare these systems. Antix comes with more features but is nowhere near as reliable on a hard drive. But I always have trouble with the Deb pkg manager.. :)

well i dont know,i really like tiny core,but its like every release its getting worse,first lf all,from version 11 to version 15 pluscore doubled in size,and second not only its increasing in size,but the apps decreased a lot,there are no games at all now,instead on older releases there was doom,and other really intresting stuff,now there are only productivity apps,if it would have some games i would use it for everyday use,but whitout any game,its almost impossible to use it as everyday use

Hey, glad to see the Core getting some coverage, but if your goal is to give it a faor chance you will want Fluxbox. This will allow you to drastically change the layout. Give it a shot, you might like it.

I suspect you wrote it off too quickly. I'm just beginning to use it but so far I solved every problem myself by searching and reading TC forum. Only when I couldn't get graphics card driver to work because I simply did not know what modules to install in what order I just asked on the forum stating that I'm not experienced linux user and I got help immediately.

I wonder how well Cygwin runs on ReactOS? Or if there would be any point in trying it? TinyCore is an interesting project, but never entirely useful.

You're better off just installing Arch Linux, because you have access to the AUR (Arch User Repository), and a fresh install of Arch uses 33 MB of ram...
@ScorpiosLifeLog

It depends. What if your "old" is different from others? Arch only supports 64bit these days. Debian? It's possible. Void Linux? Maybe. Sometimes you need an OS that supports your platform officially.

CCF_100 I said “officially”. I know those two exist. However, Arch 32 doesn’t look so promising to me. ARM? It might be the future of Arch. The emphasis here is on future.

Keep in mind the vast majority of what goes into Tiny Core's repositories coincides with the goal of using as little data as possible, and unlike Arch it is completely open source. There are advantages to both, and Tiny Core will most likely have a slow development its whole life. I was tempted to leave after I had some issues with it, but I realized that had people done that to the more popular issues they never would have gotten the chance to grow. Arch is definetly better for some, but TC is promising and appreciates all the help it can get.

@@ScorpiosLifeLog True. I have to do GUI stuff and Arch with GUI will never consume 33MB.

I've been waiting for this video quids. As have many others it appears based on the number of views and the 90 likes 0 dislikes ratio. With your skills, Linux knowledge, and dry wit, I would sincerely enjoy if you were able to turn this type of video into some type of 'vintage gear runs Linux' series. I'm sure others would enjoy as well 😬 Well done as always 👍 Cheers! -H.B.

I see on your screen that you have Firefox installed. Did you install it or was it already installed ? I am trying to run coreplus but I can't do anything with it since my internet connection is a hotspot wifi (id and pwd) so I absolutely need a web browser. I can't understant why the developers of TCL didn't anticipate this problem. I just need a mere web browder. It is so frustrating !
@tomassosaoconnor
@tomassosaoconnor 4 года назад
Firefox doesn't come installed, just write "fire" on the app thing and you should find it if your internet connection is working. If it isn't, then coreplus didn't come with your wifi drivers already installed so you'll have to use ethernet.

I use Coreplus 10 and I use the Seamonkey browser, it works fine on my ancient ACER 1GB RAM and plays RU-vid. Firefox kept crashing and I use VLC2 as my screen recorder which works fine. VLC 3 doesn't work at all.

Does anyone actually use things like Tiny Core of Puppy for anything productive?
@tonymarcuscassani9465
@tonymarcuscassani9465 4 года назад
Perhaps number of people do,(but how to know?) it would depend on the limitations and compatibility of them, and only people who are really into minimalism and tech in every single aspect of life, and know a lot about linux are most likely.I once used puppy linux for fun, and It seemed basic documentation was doable, (pehaps with a bit of a struggle,) other wise any other reasons other people would have is possesing really old hardware, and needing to make use of it.

I have an old ThinkPad T42 that I use primarily as a writing machine but it’s suddenly had to become my daily driver. It runs XP well enough but none of the other “lightweight” Linux distro run well enough (or at all sometimes) for me to actually get work done. I’m thinking about trying this out on it and seeing if it will meet my needs and not kill this 16 year old laptop.

I had 10.1 my experience was a great problem The problem was that I could not see live video from youtube because the Firefox browser asked for a codec that was incompatible with Xvesa and if I removed Xvesa to install Xorg then I had video problems with Nvidia. I couldn't do without live video and Nvidia on my computer, so I had to give up this distribution. Maybe if my PC had another graphical card i still stand there.
@SinsBird
@SinsBird 2 года назад
Try 12.0 then. 1. Boot the system. 2. (Download only option) firmware-nvidia.tcz, graphics-5.10.3-tinycore.tcz, xf86-video-nv.tcz, Xorg-7.7-3d.tcz. 3. Add everything to onboot list in the order above and remove Xvesa from onboot list. 4. Reboot and see if it's better now.
