I wrote The Desert during a season in my life where I stumbled in my faith and felt alone. This song means a lot to me, so I thought I'd submit it for the 2024 tiny desk contest. Hope you enjoy, and wish me luck!
LYRICS
Verse 1:
Walking barefoot in the sand
A stranger to this foreign land
I felt my knees sink to the ground
And the path that used to lead me faded away
I put my trust in my own two feet
But look at where that led me
I’m lost and empty
Chorus:
Oh let Your cloud hang over me
This desert Sun and scorching heat
Have no mercy for the weak
I’m searching
I’m searching for Your garden, oasis
The stream of living water
Is what I’m chasing
Ever since I got stranded
And reprimanded
I am getting understanding
That You are the answer
Verse 2:
Pulling my weight till I wear
A heavy stone heart to bear
I wander far but end up the same
And the footprints trailed behind me just leave stains
I put my fate in these fragile hands
But now look at where I am
On my own, relenting
Chorus:
Oh let Your cloud hang over me
This desert Sun and scorching heat
Have no mercy for the weak
I’m searching
I’m searching for Your garden, oasis
The stream of living water
Is what I’m chasing
Ever since I got stranded
And reprimanded
I am getting understanding
Bridge:
That I can lack every good thing but You’re all that I need
Trekking this wilderness made me see
That there’s no life worth living if You’re not with me
And I can plan I can dream
But all of these will turn into meaningless schemes if I’m lost in my heart and my soul and my mind and my body
My heart and my soul and my mind and my body
Oh I seek You out
With my heart and my soul and my mind and my body
My heart and my soul and my mind and my body
Oh I seek You out with
My heart and my soul and my mind and my body
