The Weinsberg Xcursion 500LT is a tiny motorhome built on the base of the VW Bulli 6.1 in a very original format. The Weinsberg Xcursion comes in two floor plans and attempts to pack as much as possible into a small space - however according to the Weinsberg website, payload is only 140kg - bear that mind before putting too much water in the tank - or eating that pizza!
2.800 kg
Permissible gross weight
588 cm
Length (min./max.)
216 cm / 200 cm
Width (outside / inside)
280 cm / 199 cm
Height (outside / inside)
I live in a motorhome full time and travel around Europe in it. I spend most of my time in Poland, Germany and Italy. Vanlife is my life.
In my RU-vid channel, I present reviews of recreational vehicles. Here you will find campervans and motorhomes from the cheapest camper vans to the most expensive luxury liners, from various companies including Hobby, Hymer, Carthago, Westfalia, Wingamm, La Strada, Frankia, Wavecamper, Maurer, Dreamer, Itineo, Rapido, Clever Vans, Pössl, Bürstner, Niesmann Bischoff, Action Mobil, Reisemobil Manufaktur, Robeta, Trigano, Challenger, EuraMobil, Karmann Mobil, Laika, Forster, Mobilvetta Design, Affinity, Globe Traveller, Benimar, Roller Team, Adria, Bocklet, Woelcke,Tourne, Megamobil, VW, Mercedes, CS, Renault, Ford, Fiat, Carado, Sunlight, Baileys, Chausson, Balcamp, Knaus, Weinsberg, Murvi, Bliss, Mitsubishi, Woelcke, Reisemobile Bürow, Holzmobil, Giotti Line, Florium, Fleurette, Ahorn, Westfalia, Space Camper, Orange Work, Concorde, Womondo, Protec, Auto Sleeper, Dethleffs, Ilusion, Gehocab, Malibu, Pilote, Wild Ax, Vantage, Bresler, Tom's Fahrzeugtechnik, Morelo, Swift, Carado and others.
I do this by regularly attending trade events such as CMT Stuttgart, Abenteuer und Allrad, Caravan Salon Dusseldorf, Warsaw Caravan and Camping Show and sometimes others.
I cover equipment, including 12v electrical equipment and talk a lot about lithium batteries.
I also show some of the places I have visited in Europe in my own motorhome, as well as the places you can stay at! I try to give as much coverage as I can to official campsites and free places which I use for overnighting. Therefore you can find here the aire or stellplatz that you are possibly looking for.

Clever design, payload as you pointed out (notes) 140 kg is simply a no go and that is before your quality observations about the company in general. The Italian Wingamm 540 knocks spots of this with its design and quality + payload. A lot more expensive but this one is not worth spending 86 k given its payload and quality. Cheers Alan but the Wingamm will remain the one on my wish list.

Thanks for a good objective review! I was thinking of buying this motorhome after seeing one in France. After the negative responses you received for customers with problems- its a no-no!!

Thanks George - I try to be as objective as possible. My suggestion is that using the same money, you go for a more upmarket used vehicle - Hymer, Carthago, Frankia - something like that.

I am currently camping in Norway in a rental Knaus Vansation of the rear bed layout which is similar to this van. The shower is a disaster, it requires a lot of force to move. My wife sleeps by the edge and the shower “frame” is digging into her thighs when sleeping. I tried to grab another topper from the upper bunk to help but it didn’t work. 3 weeks of agony… The fridge needs to be a double opening type as reaching into the cab to get food from outside is not possible. The rear door is poorly sealed and you hear so much road AND exhaust noise it is frankly crazy. When I picked up this rental, I thought the door wasn’t closed! On the positive side the fuel economy is good On the German autobahn doing 120 on cruise I got 10.2/100km. The side deflectors around the cab are rattling from wind noise like crazy as well. My rental has a 540kg load capacity thou and the garage is quite spacious. Overall I wanted to rent a smaller van as I plan to buy a camper this year. Better to pay for a rental, try it out than be unsatisfied with your purchase. Plan to drive a Grand California next to see if I like it. They happen to be quite “affordable” on the used market some under 60k now….

I wanted to add some more irritating observations after 5-6k km of driving. In gusty wind conditions the van is all over the road like crazy. I feel this is attributed by the fact the van sits too low in the rear. The rear springs are too soft and the van needs upgraded stabilizer bare. The wheel track in the rear is too narrow and the vehicle sways way too much. As a matter a fact, when the van is parked on a level surface it's sagging in the rear. You can't open the the freezer with the side exterior door closed... Genius design Knaus. The buttons for the lights are not responding and require multiple taps to turn off... Why? I will pass on Knaus for my next van purchase. Need to rent a few more different kinds to see where my money should go.

Thanks for the absolutely thorough report which I will repeat in a future video. Just to defend Knaus a little, do you think that some of the problems could have been caused by previous rental users who did not look after it properly?

@@VanlifewithAlan Alan no, the van was brand spanking new when I picked it up. I took some pictures of the horrible bed layout. I am in a market for a slightly used camper/camper van and seeing your reports on Knaus makes me little hesitant about their MAN based Vanti 640 Vansation.. Which I have rented for end of this month for a week. Grand California is out, the storage above the bed is horrible.

The layout is great. But of all the vans I won't be buying, that is the first one. I will take my lack of money somewhere more reliable. 😀

Brutally honest assessment from you Alan. I do like the idea of a large lounge and drop down bed though!

I really liked the layout of the first van. Do you know of any other more reliable manufacturer of something similar ?

The layout is pretty similar to one of the Wingham products I think.

You didn't know how to pull up the shower 😂 You missed the most interesting bit of this motorhome. Too much talking!

I know perfectly well how to pull up the shower and if you had been listening to the talking then you would have heard.

The non-working touch-pad is one of my pet hates. People who replace perfectly functional analog solutions with unreliable digital ones in a vain attempt to be 'fancy'. My local shopping centre replaced all of it's shopping centre maps with touchscreens, now only one person can use it at once and it takes 3 times as long to find the store you want because rather than just look at a map you have to navigate stupid menus. And then every now and again they simply stop working. So it costs more, does less. But I digress, the first van looks to be a copy of the fantastically compact Wingamm Oasis although not as nice but equally as expensive. If only you could get something like this for 20k less...
@VanlifewithAlan
@VanlifewithAlan Год назад
I could not agree more. Now there are touchscreens but one thing that became clear with Covid that touching things that everyone else has touched can get you ill so I won't touch them but it won't work if touched with a gloved hand. And then there are those things that won't work because they don't have a software update but to get the software update they need to work! And I am at an age to understand these things, but what about my mother - what is she supposed to do? You are not the first person to say it looks like an Oasis but I don't see the connection. I must be missing something!
@gooble69

@@VanlifewithAlan I think it's less the exact look and more the similar format, ie compact, rear entry, swing down bed over the cab etc.
