I agree that the rules need to change. I dont have a tiny house, but think they are a very good idea for affordable housing.

I think we all need to educate and advocate for smaller, sustainable, affordable living spaces. If you are not personally impacted now, you probably know someone that is or you will in the future. The cost and availability of housing is not going to get any better if we do nothing. -Thank you for sharing-Sue in MI

I live in Hawaii and many single people here can only afford to rent a room in someone’s house. If you want a 1 bedroom apartment to yourself it’s like 2k for a descent one. And a tiny studio you still have to pay at least around 1,400. It’s ridiculous. Also minimum wage just went up to 12.10. I’m a care giver so at least I can get paid more but yea it’s hard to survive these days for us regularly folks. also in U.S not all jobs provide medical care.

A very similar story was in the news today in Queensland, Australia. A neighbour complained to council and now the residents of 4 tiny homes on a large acerage are being evicted. Just when we're facing the biggest housing crisis in history. It's appalling.

Thank youfor inspiring me to keep encouraging others to buy affordable housing. My tiny is 8 x 16 and it is cute and cozy. I live debt free on a modest income. On a campground where I own my lot it is legal. However the county planning and zoning do not want any tiny home Community . I have spoken out and am sure over time things will change . It is the future in the US. Thank you and God bless you.

Thank you for explaining the difficulty of finding a place for a tiny house. I'm a single, senior who would love to live in a tiny home. But, with so many obstacles, it's not in my future. Many of us are unable to find affordable housing. The rising cost of property tax/utilities/insurance make it increasingly difficult especially for those of us living on social security. Hopefully more states, counties and cities will change their restrictions. Congratulations on such a beautiful place to live!

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Building codes are an important safety measure but I also understand building your own if you own land. Laws must change to fit the current times. I’m glad we have someone like you to pave the way for people like me that are close to having their own tiny home and will be looking for a community. Thank you for all you do. I love you channel more than other tiny house channels because you are real and have a way of talking like it’s just you and me. Keep up the good work and don’t listen to naysayers. As always you are so on point! Here I sit in my tiny home at a campground even though I have purchased a 5000 sq ft lot. Having to jump through all kinds of hoops to be able to legally live in my home on my land. The saving grace is that the campground is year round and the rent is so affordable and I have time to wait.

Well said!! Our housing situation is horribly crippling to many. I personally think Tiny House Living is exceptional. To live with more ease, less debt allows for space to enjoy what our lives can be. I've been watching this movement for about 2 years now. Some of the designs are mind blowing with what they can design in such a small space. It's very unfortunate how far Canada is behind in allowing the establishments of Tiny House communities. Or even as you say.. allow them to have a Tiny House on their own property. Other parts of the world definitely got it right. We need to learn from them! Your absolutely correct..things need to change. The rules are archaic! More needs to be done so people can have something of their own and take pride in it ❤

I completely agree with your views on this. As a single aging female who lives in the very expensive Southern California USA, I cannot afford to retire here. I need a tiny affordable home that I can park on someone’s land. The cities , counties and states need to come around and change the rules and regulations to accept tiny homes. It IS the way of the future!

Totally agree with you! I always think it's wonderful for people who do own a lot of property in the country and they are willing to rent a portion to someone that needs an affordable housing option. And yes, it needs to be safe for sure...but you wouldn't necessarily always want to have a rental that has a permanent foundation in that situation. Leaves the property owner the ability to evolve themselves over time, if their situation changes.

In my opinion, the adaptions to building code and land usage should have been started about 10 years ago and in place ( with adjustments) about 5 years ago. Back then, housing was becoming an issue that developed into the current crisis. Sadly most housing authorities are out of touch with the need for affordable housing. I would like to see the housing crisis being addressed with a crisis response ( ie a lot of time and resources towards solutions) I currently reside in an older RV that was built to many tiny house standards before tiny houses were more common. The local municipality closes their eyes unless forced to deal with the idea of this campground slowly becoming a tiny home community. We need more flexibility for housing options that are safe and affordable.

Firstly, welcome to one of the hidden gems of our little city. Ideal has been here for many decades, and well thought of by many locals. Laurie and I have been married for 35 years this week, and that is where we went on our first date, coffee and a burger lunch. I had been going there for many years before that. And secondly, thankyou for saying everything you said about people needing to live a smaller, more affordable lifestyle. I can't agree more. I believe this is the opinion of many, but councils just listen to the wrong people. I remember, when Laurie and I got married, we started house hunting. We already lived in a mobile home I had bought cheap and rebuilt into a nice comfortable small space. But relators insisted on showing us houses way over what we wanted to spend. I ended up telling them we didn't want to see any more with them as they weren't listening to us. I didn't care what I could afford, it was what we wanted to spend. I am quite capable of going in, gutting it, and making it what we want. He was quick to agree to start again the next day, and show us more in line what we were looking for. And he found it, and we are still here. Some of our other gems are the Canyon Trail and Suspension Bridge, lots of walking trails, and some hidden food places. There is a vegan food truck downtown in the summer. Don't know when they will be there again, but the food is great. Laurie and I have eaten there. I didn't notice your little car. Do you still have it? I really enjoyed ours.

The crow agrees. Yes I love everything you are doing and agree 1000%. I live in the U S and grew up on a farm 400 acres. I now live on 1 acre of land and a 1500 square foot ranch style home. But someday if my dear wife were to pass before I do I will not be able to afford to live her or in a retirement home. I am 81 and live on a fixed income and things have become so costly that it just scares me . I will need to live in a tiny home if I live that long and still able to take care of myself. Thanks for what you are doing and keep trucking and watch out for Bigfoot. From Iowa bye for now.

Hi Adelina, I love all of your videos but I think this is your best one yet! You really make a very reasoned argument for the need of governments to evolve extremely archaic zoning laws. While I live in a very nice small sticks and bricks house with wooded privacy and beautiful views of New Mexico mountains, I like to think I’d have options if I want to experience a new place. Looking at Zillow, I don’t see many affordable options for another mountain home (and like you I am single with a good income) so I think about the option of a tiny house that can be located in a place of my choosing. Thank you for your thoughtful insights to this topic! PS: I do wish one of your commenters restrained from bringing up the “Karen” meme. I get that it is a joke but our names are not about who we are as people. (As you communicated very well in your expression of your feelings towards the disgruntled neighbor Dick.)

@TNbear0126
@TNbear0126 Год назад
I love this. So real, such passion. Nice to see your take on the situation. And that little pancake pout. ❤😁 As I’ve said all along, all the disgruntled neighbor had to do was just come knock on your and/or your former landlord’s door, and you guys talk and hash things thing out amongst yourselves. Getting The Man (government) involved, on an impulsive, angry whim, will always result in a hassle/pain-in-the-ass. Your assessment of your neighbor is probably spot on. He had options to pursue, but he chose the one that caused you the most stress and expense. In a sane world, he’d cut you a check for some of the expenses, and sleepless nights, he directly introduced into your life. That’s the unfairness/“injustice” that still chaps my buuuttt, honestly speaking. Your neighbor threw a hand grenade into you low-key life and caused months of work, stress, worry, upheaval, etc. And all that’s resulted for him are some people (me), making jokes/jabs about how accurately he was named, etc. Haha. Doesn’t seem fair. You moved to the island last year to, hopefully, get away from city/suburban red tape and all, and someone put you right in the middle of it. I’m happy you got moved, and that having to do so again is no longer anything that curly little head has to worry about anymore. It’s great to see you moved/settled in and that dread/weight lifted. I enjoyed this video because, all along, through all this, I’ve kinda wanted to hear you cut loose and truly talk about it all from that specific angle. The things you say are true. Hopefully in the years to come, this isn’t such a freaky, weird “movement” or sliver scenario, and counties/towns will have their shit together on all the rules and codes to where one griping neighbor doesn’t put a good person over such a logistical and financial barrel. I know you enough to know you’re not a troublemaker and that you weren’t directly impacting your neighbor’s existence in any real way. But he had to make a fuss. And the whole hair-splitting over “mobile home vs. RV” by the county is a little silly. They should be ashamed of themselves. LOL Again, apologies for the pancakes. 😂 I chuckled/smiled when you called the counter a “bar”. PS - I love those kitty at slippers you had on. This was a great video. Human Adelina, running it down for everyone to hear. I’m always gonna dig those installments. 😊🐻 PS #2: it’s pretty up there!!! It seems the further north/up-island you go, the prettier it is? Just my limited, know-nothing observation. I do know you’re part duck, and you love being near all that water. ❤ 🐧

@@myBIGtinyhouselife I suppose there are no concrete rules. I just always associate "counter" with lunch/food (or breakfast) and "bar" with booze/beer. It just made me chuckle. 😂 We have lots of little mom-and-pop, meat-and-three (and breakfast) joints all around here. agree completely with you. What I dislike seeing is still the BIG mansions being built and homes on a foundation can not be less than i think 600-700 ft. More affordable tiny permanent homes should be built. Like cottages but not allowed where i live, I'm in US. I'd be happy as a clam in 200-300 ft, have a 900 ft house and only live in two rooms. Your home is beautiful, i too love a big kitchen! Only change for me i would not need the bedroom above gooseneck and sleep in the living room. I commented on your prior video regarding you having to move your home. I've been working for Pennsylvania local governments for nearly 30 years, starting in the zoning department and now managing a mostly rural township. In PA most local governments run the zoning, code enforcement and planning of their township, borough or city. The counties do not legislate these areas. Whether you agree with the local ordinances or bylaws concerning zoning, building code or planning or not, everyone should be aware of these laws and comply with them. If you choose to not comply, then you may be fined or even worst, made to move your home or tear down your pole building. I definitely do not agree with some of the local ordinances. They are intrusive and outdated. Some have been mandated by the state of PA or the federal government but most have been adopted because of residents and organizations that pushed the elected officials to adopt them. The state of PA in 2004 adopted a state-wide building code that every municipality must enforce and may make more stringent. I've found quite a few of our northern tier municipalities that are extremely rural, do not enforce the building code. Those areas do not having zoning ordinances, which are optional, so why would they enforce a building code? Well because it's the law and if your resident has a fire, a deck or roof collapse or a neighbor files a complaint, the municipality could be held liable for not enforcing the ordinance using tax payer funding to fight court battles, etc. I agree with Adelina that people should mind their own business but I know for a fact that some do not. These are the residents that make workers in government cringe when they stop into the township office or you hear their voice on the phone you just answered. The only way local government will change ordinances is by being pressured by groups of local residents, organizations or businesses to do so. People need to get involved with local politics because that level of government effects your daily life even more than state or federal government does. Okay, I'm done with my rant. BTW, I love the tiny house option for residential living especially with the costs of housing and rentals in most locations. I hope the tiny house movement can get laws changed in the near future. There are many things to consider though, like sewage planning, well or public water access, construction safeguards, access to utilities, self-contained and off-grid requirements, lot sizes, etc. There is definitely not a one-size fits all solution.

This is happening in other countries , here in Ireland a lot of people who are lucky. To have a desert size garden , are putting small buildings . Mobile homes , converted garage etc fir family members , but it also is on shakey ground so to speak , rural family farms “ most have jobs plus running their farm” are being refused planning for the one off build “. So forced to leave to buy expensive houses in our cities , emptying our rural towns and villages . Taking our choices away!!

The point of many controlling government is to make sure people work until they drop, they’re not interested in you, your feelings, or your intentions. They want everyone housed in something they can’t payoff (because it costs too much or because it’s a rental) to ensure that people have to continue working. Building codes set safety standards and indirectly keep ‘em working standards.

Besides the well-known affordable housing crisis, living in a smaller footprint just makes sense environmentally. There may come a time when these laws reverse and that a person cannot put a 3,000+ house on land taking up farmland and changing the eco-system. These extremes need to be addressed. I had to sell my shed on wheels, because of my immediate disgruntled neighbor I’ve never met calling code enforcement for everything I do on my property. I am being spied on and harassed by the city for everything I do here, including planting hedges. They have violated my right to privacy, peace and quiet and enjoyment of my land. I have been threatened, accused and assumed a liar. I moved into a dump, have cleaned up the entire property, renovated the entire small home, and the shed on wheels I bought was for my crafting, sewing and yoga. They told me that I was renting it out, which was nonsense. Wasn’t even hooked up to utilities. All because of the neighbor feeding them misinformation. I feel like selling! I can definitely relate to your situation, and yes we need change.

It’s so beautiful there. I have a little different take on the dick, I mean the man named Dick. He’s butt hurt that he couldn’t do what he wanted to do on his property. Like a child, if he couldn’t, your landlord couldn’t! He’s probably feeling very accomplished now that you’ve moved, but will it truly make happy? I think not. I do believe that everything happens as it should & hope that this move is turning out to be a blessing for you. I live in any very mountainous, somewhat secluded area. This was to be our retirement home, unfortunately, with raising taxes every year, coupled with the rising cost of living and the passing of my husband that it is becoming so difficult for me as a retiree to maintain a home. I’m starting to see many farms & large properties be subdivided for subdivisions because the landowners cannot afford the taxes. It’s a snowball effect with more homes that the infrastructure can’t handle & continued rising taxes to keep up. Sorry, didn’t mean to be so negative. I love the area you are in. It looks so peaceful and that is something we all need! Have a good week!

Interesting you would mention the smoke from the US to Canada, they have certainly given Canada a hard time this past week over the smoke from Canada to the US. How often have we heard 'cause that's the way it's always been', crazy ass statement. Yes, changes are needed, but it's the government so don't hold your breath. I once went to the city to have a sign removed, they said it would cost $300, that was 20 years ago, can only imagine the price now. Anyway, I was joking and carrying on with the fella and I said 'what if it just disappeared lol' and he said 'your neighbours would report it immediately' and then he went on to say 'most everything we know comes from nosy neighbours'. He's right!! Glad your settling in..

Thank you so much for your honesty and openness about your journeys, including how you lost your space and your move. You really touch on matters that I have concerns about. It is a shame that the bylaws are stifling us from affordable/desirable alternatives. I keep wondering how mobile homes came to be accepted, not just in parks but on their own patches of land too. Maybe because they are an acceptable size and agreed to be on foundations (ha, not mobile anymore). I did notice that you said Dick tried to place a tiny home on his land. Maybe the frustration of the process it would have taken him to do it legally, led him to lash out at your landowners and you. My biggest future concern is juggling the timing of getting my home built and finding a spot. The builder says I must have a place for it to go first. One of the villages I checked with, says I must have a tiny home already, when I apply to be placed on the wait list. It is daunting. Keep up with the great content!

Im 76 and living in 314 sq ft inter-shelter dome i own in the backyard of my daughters residential home here in SE Alaska. Because of code, i was not allowed to buy a little lot and move a tiny house on wheels on it. The codes are ancient and frustrating. Ive worked hard all my life, had home in Seattle, raised 2 girls, divorced. I could not afford to live otherwise on SS. Women have not had a say in how laws were written, and we still have many nonsense laws on the books. The political is personal. In my day, I wasn’t allowed a credit card without hubbies permission! We haven’t moved much from that, and appear to be sliding back. None of this will change soon, building codes or women, black, minority… human rights in US, Canada around the globe until straight men lose their power over us. That is happening, and they know it. Meanwhile, stay informed, vote, and live life to the fullest (in a tiny home), we only have one!

I think those people making those comments she talked about need to take a step back and think. Based on the details given, "Dick" was not complaining because bylaws were being broken. "Dick" was complaining because they could not have what the neighbour had. That's the juvenile and selfish part of "Dick". "Dick" could have easily gone to her landlord and teamed up against the council and got other neighbours involved as well to get council to update the bylaws but they didn't. Anyway, I live in Ontario. We have some of the the most outdated bylaws, with regards to this, in all of Canada. Pretty sad really.

With respect and in my opinion, the people who are complaining are not the problem. I believe it is the building code/fire codes which do not address tiny homes. Dick was pointing out the law. If the municipality allows people to brake the rules, where do you draw the line. Dick was just the messenger. Things hopefully will change sooner than later. People need to Lobby the government to add an addendum to the codes as was done in the U.S. I watched a television program where they had the same problem and found the addendum solution. Until the law changes, anyone who wants to put a tiny house on even there own land will run into this.

The reason people live on the "fringe of rules and by-laws, I believe, is because local governments won't, or remain slow to recognize the sustainability of tiny homes. I believe that when you purchase a tiny home, there should be the option to catagorize them as RV OR Modular home. That blanket "RV" designation makes people think that anyone living in a tiny home, is always moving it around and won't actually be a contributing asset to the community. Also, I can not speak for "self built" tiny homes, but those build by licensed builders, are built to a higher standard than an RV or even a manufactered home and are closer to an actual "stick build" home in the materials used. It's crazy to think, with the state of the economy and the lack of affordable housing, that local governments aren't racing to be the first to employ this creative housing idea. And to the negative nancy's in the comments,,,,😛

Counties, councils etc wherever you live, need to adapt for quality built & certified tiny homes and land use for residential tiny homes. The housing crisis has changed everything very fast. Here in Australia you need to earn AUD$170,000 a year to service an average mortgage for the medium house price of AUD$700,000. That is an unbelievable salary that knocks out 80% or so of Australians. Loved this RU-vid, you have articulated it very well & that we do need affordable options.
