Nice. Well designed. I always couldn't stand the creeping around that was required in "normal" tiny homes where you only had a loft. Great idea to lift the top floor (or roof).

I love the concept. But I fear that in very gusty conditions coming broadside with the roof raised, those additional jacks maybe overpowered. They need the types the cranes or utility vehicles use, that can be bolted to the frame.
@WilderwiseHomes
@WilderwiseHomes Год назад
Thanks! So far, we have experienced 55mph+ crosswinds, while stationary, with no issue. This is with the roof raised, detached from our tow vehicle, and without any tie downs secured. We have not had the opportunity to test it in higher winds yet. If you are concerned about highly destructive storm winds, there are several steps you can take: First, you can use stakes and tie downs to anchor the home to the ground. There are multiple lashing points along the trailer and frame. Installing a skirt around the trailer and wheels will prevent wind from going underneath the home. If need be, you can lower the roof for the storm. This will decrease the height by 3.5 ft. Re-hitch to the tow vehicle for added weight and stability. Finally, if you have the chance to, the home can be towed to a safer location for the duration of the storm. Also consider the home’s weight distribution. More than 70% of the weight of the home is in the bottom half, with the majority being in or directly on top of the trailer. Since it is bottom heavy, it is much less likely to be affected by wind. And yes, our homes are lightweight compared to other tiny homes, but still weigh close to 10k lb and can be loaded up to 14K lb with solar panels, personal belongings, water, etc.

I wish all tiny homes could have a roof that raises. That way the loft bedroom is something you can stand in. That would make such a huge difference.
@jershuw
@jershuw Год назад
Only a small problem with that and not an issue they address. With the roof there naturally has to be a gap so it can move up/down so that means the home probably isn't insulated super well (and also probably notably why there isnt a minisplit on the second floor)
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG Год назад
@@jershuw Actually, multiple issues. Mechanism means a system that will need maintenance and deal with risk of it breaking down and needing to be replaced over time... Cost, since this adds complexity, costly components, etc. that can significantly raise the cost of the build and is why this idea hasn't really spread despite being around for decades... Like slide outs you're dependent on weather seal gaskets to make it weatherproof but that will wear out over time... While it usually has to be bottom heavy for stability and as it takes up some space, it reduces the max size of the main level to keep it road legal size for width... There's more but those are the main issues... Being based in California, they can work around many of these issues and so far they're keeping it below the usually over $100K these tend to be, but it's still not without its drawbacks and time will tell how well it works and how much of the country it can work in as it's not as heavy duty as may be required in more extreme climates and weather conditions. Along with whether the system can work with snow loads, etc.
@beyondview
@beyondview Год назад
Well they make tiny homes with completely stand-up Lofts. That way you don't have to worry about the potential mechanical failures in a tiny home like this
@jershuw
@jershuw Год назад
@@beyondview they do at the cost of other things. Since in the US tiny homes are technically too small for HUD so they have to be labeled as RV's the sacrifice is made in the loft since it's not full height they dont have to classify it as square footage.

Saw this home and couple on another channel a year or two ago. So excited for them that they are moving forward with their idea! I'm sure with time the concept will only get better. I do have to wonder however how well the house is insulated though. Since the top floor slides up there has to be a gap of some measure to allow it so that would limit the kind of climate you could have this home in.
@WilderwiseHomes
@WilderwiseHomes Год назад
Thanks for the kind words :) The home is actually really well insulated! The walls are R-22 and the trailer/roof is even higher. We improved the lifting roof seal that you see in this video in our new builds. The new builds have a hinged seal with rubber, foam, and wood. When operating the lifting roof, the seal is folded back on the hinge so that it is out of the way. When the roof is in either its lifted or lowered position, the seal is pushed back into place and puts pressure against the outer wall, thus creating a water and air proof seal.

I love the way they incorporated the full-size second floor with a motor. I also like that they're building customized homes, as there are things I love but things I'd do slightly differently (for example, having a combination microwave/convection oven or trying to fit a bathtub into the bathroom). I'm also impressed that they've kept both the weight and the price down while still creating something that looks and feels "homey."

Love the raisable roof! In most towable tiny houses I'd want my bedroom to be downstairs and use the upstairs only for storage lofts, rather than sleep in a cramped room I can barely sit up in. I still might prefer a downstairs bedroom for ease and less chance of overheated bedroom in summer, but a full height upstairs floor gives so many more comfortable options!

This is a great tiny home because of the roof raise. It’s nice to have a full bedroom and a second good size room to use for whatever you need. I saw another tiny home that was a roof raise that comes out of Germany. They use top end materials, looks like a Swedish type light wood minimalist look, which I didn’t care for, but it was well done. The problem is they start at $125k or perhaps a bit higher. For $40k less, I’d much rather have your home, plus you don’t have to pay for shipping from Germany! The only issue I question on your model is the single lift as I’m not sure how long that would last, but guess it depends on the weight of the roof. I’m sure you had all that engineered so it must be fine. Also wonder how the hight does in really high winds? I guess if there’s any issues, you can always install either the pullout or foldout jacks that stand 2-3 feet from the trailer which would really widen and stabilize the base. If I bought one, I’d want solar, but I’d install it myself or have it done since you guys don’t offer it. Of course that greatly increases the cost. But if you have No hookup, you really have no choice. You can always put the batteries in your tongue box which would add some substantial weight, but if you had sufficient weight capacity on your truck it shouldn’t beca problem. The house really looks quite comfortable and seems to have about everything you need. Congratulations and I hope you find great success guys!

For a tiny home you'd want to move around, the raising roof is amazing and solves one of the biggest issues if you want an upstairs space which is having to crouch to be up there. I don't care what people say, that would get old very fast with me.

Many of the lower cabinets can just be laid on their sides and don't need to be picked up to move them. When the cabinets are filled, it will take a bit longer to prepare for travel. To do so, you can either move them with items still inside by securing the door closed, or you can take items out of the cabinets before moving. This likely wont take more than a few hours at most, and even so, most customers are not moving their tiny home frequently (maybe every few months/years).

They only have one in the center there and large gas struts like on a hatchback in car for the 4 corners that take most of the load. Once the struts start losing some power just like hatchback it'll try closing from the weight and the actuator will start having a lot of issues .

@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG Год назад
It'll have to be hurricane strength... You get much more than a stiff wind just towing it along the highways at up to 60+ MPH...
@WilderwiseHomes
@WilderwiseHomes Год назад

How secure is the top part? So afraid for it coming down and killing the people instantly.
@WilderwiseHomes
@WilderwiseHomes Год назад
From our FAQ page: The entire system locks into place when lifted. The gas springs have additional lock pins that engage when lifted, and the lower cabinets are a secondary safety measure. There will also be the option to position additional steel bars in the corners when parked, especially if you are expecting heavy snow loads. All of these system components are over-engineered, meaning they are rated to withstand more weight and be used much more regularly than in this application. The actuator has a 20+ year lifespan and is designed for multiple cycles per day. The gas springs are designed for 50K-100K cycles in their lifetime. A customer would have to perform an average of 10 cycles per day, every day for 20 years in order to achieve 75K cycles! This extreme example highlights the industrial capacity of the lifting roof system and its ability to operate smoothly for years to come.

I love the whole second gloor concept however having watched hundreds of these tiny home videos I have to say that little oven is useless that washer dryer combo not in ideal position because uou do mot hsve enough place to store your food i would say the himes that have that in the bathroom way better and convection is okay but it is not a boondocking or iff grid as a lot of tiny homes tend to be or in some cases need to be you need either solar or a generator
@WilderwiseHomes
@WilderwiseHomes Год назад
The convection oven works great for us! Our builds are custom so customers can choose to include a larger gas oven. Since this build is small, we have to save space wherever possible. In larger builds, we could put the washer/dryer in the bathroom and include more food storage space.

Much like how camping changed to "glamping", the tiny house "movement" changed quite a few years ago. It's changed from small, cute and affordable to larger and drastically more expensive. Going back to the mid 201x's builds were $20k at the top end. Now the seemingly "low end" is $100k with some costing 3x as much.

A note to Jenna: The introduction to your videos, where you show people with their tiny homes, frequently had a gay couple, an acknowledgement that I liked. I haven't seen them for awhile, and that's disappointing. I'm hoping that you haven't removed them because you've caved to pressure from homophobic MAGA reactionaries. Anyway, would be be nice to see them, or another gay couple, as part of your intro. Thanks.

The home is functional, but it really lacks in esthetics. The vinyl siding is just downright ugly, and the interior lacks originality and a quaintness that some beautiful wood features would add. Utilitarian....yes, but one would think a jazz artist would incorporate some creatively unique features and colors to the pallet.
