The transmitting frequency and range seem unimportant when you need cables anyway. As usual we are not shown how difficult it is to synchronize in your video editing programs - and how many plugins we have buy or wait for. Back to clapping and hoping.
Thanks for this review. I'm need to get familiar with time code for my cameras (SONY FS5 and Panasonic GH5) and Sound Devices MixPre-6 audio recorder. None of these have timecode BNC input, so I presume timecode would require use of an audio track on each. Can you narrow down my options for which of these systems to look at for a time code system to sync my gear?
Any of these sync boxes would work. Since you're using a DSLR one that might be of particular interest to you would be the Tentacle Sync. This is because it has a built in reference mic.
@@njh209 Thanks for the reply. The built-in mic is a nice addition, but I suppose I could get around that with a Y splitter cable for using the other devices. I'm thinking a device with a display screen would help to set up the devices and confirm what's going on. A friend has the first generation Tentacle Sync and says it requires their (free) software utility for whomever has to handle sync in post. I would prefer timecode be embedded into an audio channel that can be deciphered in a NLE.
@@davidp158 you would not have to use Tentacle's software if you use the Tentacle Sync box. The software is a bonus that's included with your purchase. The time code the Tentacle outputs is exactly like all other sync boxes and can be sync'd the same way. That being said any of these boxes are great!
I'm not clear which of these can output a signal to an audio track, so it can be used on a DSLR type rig. I know that's the primary use for Tentacle, but what about the others?
Since the release of this video, Tentacle Sync firmware 2.0 has been introduced, allowing the Tentacle Sync E to sync over Bluetooth, but to a mobile device, rather than to other Tentacles.
We generally don't include pricing in videos, since that's often subject to change. You can see all the current pricing at the manufacturer links below the video or the 2018 pricing side by side at www.gothamsound.com/tiny-time-code-sync-boxes-comparison-chart-march-2018
Gotham Sound - thx for the table. I get where you’re coming from but a ballpark saying something like they are all in the 250-500 range for example would calibrate the discussion. I do get that you chose not to do it though. Thx again for the table.
Gotham Sound much appreciated. And thanks for making the video. There isn’t a lot of content easily found to find out about current timecode generator products. I spent a few days hunting before I found your video which gave a very good overview of what’s available.
