+TomSka Words reffering to sex don't describe how good this is. Words referring to Tiramisu on the other hand. Unless you have a dislike for the dessert. Then cheese... Cheese for everyone.
+gingervampireFTW Ha, so young. The fight scene is from the old silent Chaplin type movies. That is where Jackie Chan got the moves from. The musical timing was well done here.
+vi 360 Photography Actually he was more of a Buster Keaton fan than Chaplin, but they are from the same era of movies and those two guys were the gold standard for silent movie action and comedy. They kind of still are since, everything you see today is a copy of a copy of what they did in the 1920s.
That's because this is good old fashioned physical comedy. Many directors and comedians forget about such a crucial form of comedy that you almost never truly see it in movies today. Sure we have diologe but this format forces the actors to truly use their body expressions to tell a story. Not many today can do that.
That whole thing was a fucking masterpiece but the icing on the cake had to be the part when they started playing the Psycho theme when that lady came at the bartender with the knife. Bravo boys.
I have massive respect for guy who wrote a score to this. Writing 15 minutes for an ensemble is hard enough, and to do it so perfectly like an old silent film is incredible. I can only imagine how much time and effort they had to put into it
Oh, both Ellary and Josh seem so much more expressive in this. Silent comedies really rely on your acting and facial expressions, not flashy effects, CGI monsters, explosions or the like. It's a breath of fresh air to see something like this!
8o8inSquares yes but Jackie Chan used Charlie Chaplins style but reinvented it... this is more JC then CC style (apart from the black and white of course)
That was unbelievable. The style, movements, facial expressions, music (the MUSIC, HOLY CRAP THE MUSIC) are absolutely perfect for the genre. Awesome to see a return of Josh and Ellary, love you both. This is absolutely one of the best videos I have ever seen on this website. I'll be honest, I thought VGHS was the "peak" of this channel, but I think this one film (this is absolutely a standalone film) rivals the entire first season of VGHS. 10/10 IGN
This was awesome, I hope their will be a making-off, because I really want to know how you did this super-long-shot when the microfilm is ending in the glass
+David DSB You can see the entire process of the long take on the hulu show! rocketjump.com/hulu And if you watch it on hulu we look super important and cool.
+Achallon thats its the lighting actually. Because they knew it was going to be monochrome, they had a little more room to work with lighting, and give it that old fashioned noir look.
+Da Fuq I guess it has something to do with being anonymous so you don't know who they actually are, making them more, free in what they choose to say, but yea it sucks :/
Normally, your videos are really good and a lot of fun, but this was approaching serious, serious levels of quality. Like, Cannes film festival quality. The acting, especially by the bartender, and cinematography and choreography were incredible and a blend of the actual old-time silent movies and newer movies. This was really good and I don't go around saying that about everything. A fantastic 15 minutes. Wow, I sound like a snob, but it's true though.
I really enjoyed it and really impressed that they managed to make it interesting even though a pretty large portion of it had zero camera movement/change of angle. But just because it's a short doesn't mean it's bad. Shorts can be really powerful and be really well done and even land writers and directors larger jobs.
I don't understand, why is everyone criticizing when the pros far outweigh the cons in this short? Did anyone notice that there were no cuts at all from 9:40 to 12:09? That's a solid 2.5 minutes of clever antics they needed to all get right in one shot. Have some appreciation for their hard work once in a while; is that too much to ask for?
Seriously this was awesome! The guy who you got to play the barkeeper his expressions remind me of Matthew Broderick and I loved it! This is why I love Rocket Jump just...please nothing like Fan Friction again.
This was incredible. I'm a lowly film student, and I think I can clear up some of the sound confusion. Silent films were more often than not accompanied by live music. In some cases, they had sound effect teams (that could account for the dogs barking and the sneeze). These are easy to emulate with a very small foley crew. This isn't meant to be seen as a home video; it's meant to be similar to watching a silent movie in the theater.
I love how you reunited Josh and Ellary. The long shot is impressive, but it gets boring after a while when there are no new story points. Love the tone of the piece and how much the stakes raise. Hilarious.
Actually taking a bit from the cash register to start the tip is normal, back when I worked at five guys the manager would start the tip jar at the beginning of the day with a 5 or a few 1s, psychologically no one wants to be the first to tip, and if they see an empty jar they think it's not workth it or maybe the service wasn't as good or etc Granted when the tip was counted at the end of the day however much the manager put in at the beginning was put back into the register.
Some of the short films you've put out recently have been good, but this one was amazing. The costumes, the set / lighting, the action, the laughs... everything was on point. Seriously impressed Rocket Jump!
+Kankabar Thank you I've worked with film and I was so confused at how they could have ~6min of the same scene- but if they were do it that way it makes a lot more since!
Rocketjump made a very big mistake!!! The scene of this video is based in Switzerland, so they don't use US Dollars!!! In Switzerland they use Swiss Franc!! They should have got this right!
+tye tygon That sign was, in fact, Sfr, but it didn't read to people as a price right away. Let's assume it's an American travelling fun fair and they expect the locals to convert to their currency haha!
damn you guys definitely saved the best for last. holy shit that was amazing. and the fight scene, goddamn. a mix of buster keaton, chaplin, and jackie chan, and so effortless. this shit is amazing
Wow, this was very well done! Can't wait for the behing the scenes material and see how long the single takes were on this one! Very impressive! It also makes you respect the masters of old a lot more when you realise see difficult this kind of visual comedy must be to get right.
9:40 - 3 minutes barfight in one long take, with no apparent cuts, perfectly timed action and trick shots like throwing the reel into the drinking glass (10:28) - pretty awesome, I guess there's more effect trickery going on than it seems at first...
Oh Lord, it's like the first vid where I purposely decreased the quality because of its special style. So well done! You guys are not only the ones who are great in making fun stuff, but also great filmmakers! Great job!
***** true, they were good, but when i was watching in 720p, it felt like they just filmed something and made it black and white. I don't know about you, but i wanted it to look like i was watching from a tube tv or something... :)
Since I don't see it mentioned anywhere in the top comments, I'll write it myself: I really liked that 3 minute one shot bar scene. :) P.S. I liked the rest of the short, too.
+Ducati Kozak 9:40 to 12:40 all one slapstick take! (with a slow zoom) & a Great soundtrack! Can't say enough about it! My vote is in too! (Sorry, where do I vote?)
