A few of you asked me to try out the Tip Top Temp on the Weber kettle. I bought one and gave it a try to see what all the hype is about. Watch the video to see my experience.

I also made some pulled pork for some tacos and it ended up making some great sandwiches too.

I’ve seen people put the gasket on the outside of the vent handle. I’m glad you tried it in the cold, I don’t have that luxury. I adjust mine only a couple of times through the cook.

I tried bending it first, but I'd have to bend it pretty far to get it out of the way. Added benefit: The handle kept it from falling off since I didn't have magnets like you do.

I appreciate the review. I own a TTT and think it is very useful. I did make a mistake in cleaning mine. It said to place in hot water for soaking. I put it in boiling water and the dial popped off so I don’t have numbers anymore. It’s real value is in holding the temp for long cooks. As your coals diminish the vent will open to keep the temp up. I use mine on both the kettle, and my Komado’s. I recommend it.

I find if I follow the tiptoptemp chart for ambient air temp / desired cook temp, it works a treat. I'm at sea level, so maybe that's why it really is set and forget for me.

Hi does the the chart take into account of the difference between the dome and grate temperature for a Weber kettle . It might be 300 at the grate and maybe 350 at the dome ....so If I need my target to be 300 then should I calibrate the device to target 350 ? And I really appreciate the review because the device came without instructions
@GrillTopExperience
@GrillTopExperience 4 года назад
That was my frustration too. I wish they had given better instructions in the box. The chart was made by someone else, but I had to add +1.5 or so and open the bottom vent some to get the right grate temperature. It took a bit of experimenting and you'll probably have to adjust to get it to work at your altitude.

Hi and thank you for your great videos and I apologise for commenting on your video which is 18 months old. However, this may be of use to someone. I bought a Tip Top Temp to use with my Weber Performer here in the UK. The plastic heat resistant handle on the top vent can be removed without too much effort. This allows the Tip Top Temp to sit properly on the lid which achieves a better seal, therefore giving much better air flow control. My TTT now sits on my Weber kettle lid permanently using the wire clips which unfortunately have to be ordered separately, (here anyway) and it doesn't fall off when I place the lid in its holder.
@GrillTopExperience
@GrillTopExperience 3 года назад
Don't apologize. Can you put the plastic handle back on still?
@stevep.8706
@stevep.8706 3 года назад
@@GrillTopExperience Yes, the handle is easily refitted. However, if it was removed and refitted frequently I think it would become loose and maybe not stay in place. My Tip Top Temp is currently fixed to the lid of my kettle using the wire clips as I can't see any reason to remove it at the moment, so the plastic handle is stored safely away.

I use my TTT every smoke and even on hotter cooks (turkey for christmas etc). We often have changing wind and temperature conditions where i live, it helps out with that a lot. I've also found i usually need to crack the intake a bit for low temp cooks, and a bit more for higher temps. But again, being able to walk away for a few hours is nice.

Thank you for doing this! I live in Denver so I will experience the same altitude issues when I'm there. I just received mine for Christmas and haven't had a chance to use it yet. Like most things, it will have a learning curve (air leaks, etc.) but I'm excited to use mine. I really appreciate your honest appraisal.
@GrillTopExperience

Thanks Roger. I'm at 4800 feet, so we should be pretty close. For me, it was about a +1 dial difference compared to what they had in their chart. There are a lot of variables in charcoal cooking, but that's part of the fun.

I think that you did a very good job on a unboxing and what the first experience with the TipTopTemp can be. Yes the edges can be sharp, I will have a chat with the manufacture. Yes Weber never told me of their handle design changes but this was addressed several years ago with leaving the handle outside the TTT as you properly did and pictures on the website showed. Considering air leakage from so many other areas on the grill, the handle area should have minimal effect. I dare say that there is dozens of different manufactures and models annually- it is hard to keep up. I believe that you were correct on the vent changes because of the altitude that you had to open the vents a little. Just as the Kamados , BGEs and Very hot grill cooks will also need to slightly increase the bottom vent. The TTT only controls 1of 3 needed elements for a cook (fuel, fire and air). If the aid is thin through a single opening, then you are starving the fire and will not get the desired temp without an effective larger opening (ie bottom vent). Remember, It is just a simple tool with a simple function, to open and close within a narrow temperature range, don't over think it. You should notice a marked fuel efficiency (30-50% reported by some) and consistent temperature. And as I said, I thought that you did a good job on a possible first impression. What I really like was your comment at the end, in reference to manual adjustment "From experience, I can dial in a temperature and keep it there for 2 hours without touching the kettle" . Isn't that true of everything? With enough experience the TTT should also become easier to use. And I thank you for your last comment "It does hold the temperature really well and set where you need it though". Have a wonderful and healthy new year 2020. You can contact me through the website for any future testing, accessories or questions. Bruce - Inventor of the TipTopTemp - email at INFO@TIPTOPTEMP.COM

I appreciate the feedback. There's always a learning curve when you use something new. With a bit more time and experience with the TTT it would probably be second nature to get it set up to hit your target temperature. I was surprised how tight it kept the temperature range. A vent only adjustment would easily have twice the variance and it's much cheaper than the blower type controllers. Sorry, I missed some of the details from the website. I plan to keep using it. You'll see it again.

Great video and review. In theory the TTT does seems like a great product, replicating for a modest amount of money the type of control you can otherwise only achieve i guess by spending a lot more money including on more expensive and complicated grills . I am thinking about picking one up but would be very interested to know if a year or so later on from your initial review if you feel differently about the TTT. So would be grateful if you could help me with the following quick questions. Would you recommend it now? Do you still use it much or if at all? If you do not use it still, say only because you have other better solutions, would you use it otherwise because from your POV it does help in controlling long and slow cooks especially? How has the build quality of TTT stood up after all this time?
@GrillTopExperience
@GrillTopExperience 3 года назад
Their updated version with the wooden dial with no markings makes me a little bit sad (but I haven't used it). That increases the fiddle factor to get things dialed in the way that you would like. The more you have to fiddle the easier it is to learn how to use the vents well in comparison. It does give you better temperature control once it is dialed in, but it is up to you if that is worth it.

Hey Grill Top Experience, Ive ordered this but I’m actually planning on putting a vent reducer so I can fit the tip top temp on my offset vent stack. Do you think it would work like using it on the Weber where I would not need to have my intake vent open for the tip top temp to work? Or do you think I would still need airflow going into my offset firebox?

New to grilling, Weber, etc. My question: Is that a SNS in the kettle? & isn't that what the SNS is suppose to do (maintain temp for low & slow)? I don't have a SNS, but I thought it was suppose to cook for 8 hrs @225*?
@GrillTopExperience
@GrillTopExperience 4 года назад
I use the SNS all the time. It helps keep the temperatures down by using the water reservoir, but it's the vents that give the fire oxygen to burn. They have to be set right to work, but you are right you SD not have to adjust the vents much with the Slow N Sear if you set it up right.
@jm.519
@jm.519 3 года назад
When comparing how much you have to fiddle with the TTT vs the actual vents, what is the starting point? When I do summer cooks, I have to adjust the vents on my kettle (with slow n sear) every hour or so as the sun moves, and I even give myself 50 degrees of variability (225 to 275). Was that the case here, or is it fiddle for the first hour or two and its good?
@GrillTopExperience
@GrillTopExperience 3 года назад
You'll still need to fiddle as the outside temperature changes and you wrap the meat, etc, but it'll be less often than every hour. I'd easily leave it for a couple hours.

This invention looks really interesting. I have not seen it before. My concern is the build quality. I know it's made in the United States, but I'm concerned that you had to use a Dremel on it for those sharp edges. I don't have a Dremel and I'm not that handy.

They have some information on their website : "Boil a quart/liter of water, add a small amount of hand dish soap, the type that will clean grease. Invert the TTT in the hot water for 2-3 minutes." Then they have you use some sort of scrubber to get it off. You'll want to clean it often to keep it from getting too grimy. It also gets more residue on your kettle vent than you would without it.

I live in Nebraska and the only way I can get this to work is to keep the bottom vent open. Once I got it set it worked pretty well. There has been some fluctuation but I have not touched anything on the grill since I got it set about 2.5 hours ago.
@GrillTopExperience
@GrillTopExperience 4 года назад
Nice! It takes some experimentation, but I was surprised how consistent things were. I've only had to adjust it after wrapping, but I probably would have had to do that with the vents too.

Don’t know if it was already mentioned, but if you take the plastic/rubber handle off the vent, the tip top fits right over it.

@GrillTopExperience 4 года назад
If the plastic handle comes off, it doesn't come off easily. I'd rather leave it on for cooks where I don't use the TTT. It ends up being a nice holder for it so it doesn't pop off. It will fit over the less expensive kettles though.

My two cents. The instructions for this thing are really vague and lacking proper detail, there is a lot they don’t take into account. The updated model had the numbers removed, basically telling you to mark your own settings. Which I guess is technically correct. You would think they would have a few instructional vids, but instead they link a meat cranium review. The appeal vs say a fan controller is obviously the price, especially if you don’t have an appropriate temp probe, and you have to drill a hole. But a bbq guru pit viper is better for the best set it and forget it experience.

Once I get the temp set I can walk away for a few hours without messing with the vents. I have been considering trying out a electronic fire controller with a fan to see how well that works.
