Quick tip to prevent damaging decorative screw heads. Using Slotted screw these days usually means that it's for decorative purposes, and will often be brass, bronze, or copper. Using normal screwdrivers will often leave you will a damaged screw head since the material is so soft. Gun Smiths and Armorers screwdriver sets can be a cheap source of parallel ground Screwdrivers of varying widths that will give you a perfect fit and leave the head intact.

Great tip, Ray. This is what I've been doing for as long as I can remember. It works great and really saves you a lot of frustration.

+Lyle Kobberstad yeah I used to actually grind my screwdrivers parallel, but since I got the little set I don't bother anymore.

Good tip! I will also get a steel screw of the same size and pre-tap the hole with that screw.

Good tip Ray! I've never heard of armorist screwdrivers.

+Jack Bench Woodworking yeah it’s odd that they seem to be specific to gun smithing. You can buy parallel ground screw drivers other places obviously but you never seem to get the varied blade widths.

July With Fitz parallel ground screwdrivers aren't too uncommon but the different thicknesses you get in gun smithing sets come in really handy!

Yeah I only use them for decoration. And only tighten them by hand.

How come a screw can be used for decorative purposes? That is beyond my understanding... Anyway, pretty good tip for people living in the US :-)
@TabLeft

HODYO Design well some screws look better than others... so if you choose a screw based on aesthetics as opposed to purely function then it would be decorative... and if people can't get things delivered where you live, you should consider moving...

Some screws look less ugly than others, sure, I agree. My point is that when you build stuff for "decorative" purposes, you want to hide screws as much as you can (and yes, you can) so that you get the best nice looking result.

HODYO Design Many people (myself included) use screws that are intentionally left visible (or in some cases by necessity) because they add to the aesthetic. Some times that's just the look you're going for.

homer power not really these are a cheapo set I think I got from walmart many years ago (probably $10) but you can get much better ones. You can even buy nice parallel ground screw drivers from woodworking shops but I don't think you get the varied blade widths. I know there are good sets out there but I don't know the names off hand.

I thought 1/4" slot bits have a similar section of flatness.
@TabLeft
@TabLeft 7 лет назад
Adam Rivera if you have the hollow ground kind (pretty common) they are fairly parallel at the tip but you don't get the varied blade widths which is very important. So that they fit all screws most screw drivers tips are slightly under sized and can damage the screw heads if there's any play.
