Thanks for that video. I also plant Basil near tomatoes along with marigolds, good companion plants to attract pollinators and thwart nematodes. Another good hack I use is to keep a bird watering bath at each end of my tomato planter so the birds, especially Blue Jays, dont dive-bomb my tomatoes for water!!
I planted Lavender in buckets near my Tunnell doors and seem to work with most pests apart from slugs but I also catch Harvestmen spiders and place them on my Tomato plants as they seem to sit happily on them and and black beatles and centipedes go in my tunnels when I see them.
Very interesting little clips , just serve as a reminder, I’m growing broad beans this year for the first time, Aquadulce Claudia, I too lost my first batch through frost but my second batch have been growing well outside since February, I’m in Cornwall, I wonder though as a retired chef if you could give me some ideas on how to get the best flavour from the beans how you would cook them. Thanks Steve for all your really practical tips , you are a good source of information.❤️
When do you put your Onions out Steve? Would be good to see yours to do a comparison, I've had mixed germination this year! Next year I'm doing all new seed. Take care
Yes for companion planting! I'm really surprised more people don't mention it as a matter of course - just learning a little bit at a time (like the tagetes) makes it a far less daunting topic. And no - I don't think I've ever cleaned out my water butts (have to be very careful how I say that!) so that's another job for my list! Great tips Steve.
I decided not to grow broad beans this year. I had an accident last year whilst picking them. I forgot to keep two points of contact on the ground, us old ladies need that. So, I fell backwards and landed on the path. Fortunately, I fell on my bum, the only part of me that has padding. I'm being more careful now... I'll buy my broad beans from the shop, not the same I know :(
Have you ever tried the silver antimicrobial discs made for water butts that claim to keep them permanently clean ? Maybe you could trial one on a video ? 😊
Hi Steve, could you tell me how much vermiculite to add to seed compost, some say 50/50, but it seems like a lot. Any advice would be much appreciated, than you.
