Another great point about the “normal” species. If you are sharing your photos with an international or even national audience, just because it’s a common animal where you are doesn’t mean that it won’t be thoroughly enjoyed by a viewer where it is considered exotic.

We have about 4 osprey families in the neighborhood. Has gotten to the point where I don’t pay attention as I havev1000’s of pics. Your advice to keep taking pictures made me think. I don’t have the Osprey fishing yet, and thinking about the lighting on them….well, you just made them exciting again. Thanks for all your tips.

These have been incredibly helpful. I’ve wanted to get a photo of a large white-tailed buck without distracting trees which is tough to do where I live given the deer stick to the woods. I finally had a chance to photograph a large buck in velvet last weekend. I nearly sprinted across a field to reposition myself to good side light and he eventually walked up and I got a beautiful pic that makes his antlers look like they’re glowing!

Fantastic advice! The best tip you gave, for me, is, don't look for the sharpest, look for the interesting, expressive ones. My photos are never that sharp so I already have a head start on that, lol! I love backlit wildlife too and have done it by accident (just grabbing the shot because most are taken on the dog walk and I don't get chance to plan!) and always been really pleased with those shots. My challenge to myself, is to capture a bird's breath in the air.... I love your image of that.

Even if the background is not ideal your tips just allowed me to take my best photo to date of ducks in flight and really close, not even 20m away. Was really happy once at home reviewing them. Among a bunch of nearly on focus ones, there she was, gold, tack sharp and great pose. Made the two hours out in the cold worth every second.

For someone who has a camera for only one month having someone sharing knowledge makes the learning process so much easier. The panning technique was what allowed me to get those shots due to low shutter speeds (F3.5 at 1/400 iso 100) with reduced lightning due to passing clouds. The best one which got me really happy was a bit early with better lighting at F2.8, 1/2000 iso 100. Was shooting in Aperture priority mode at the time.

Hello Simon I'm a recent subscriber. From North central Ohio. For the last 5 years I have been lucky enough to have a pair of nesting osprey about 200 yards off my front lawn. I live literally right along the river that runs past my house and down past their nest. My favorite predator bird for sure as I have studied them alot. I believe they are underrated as their skills and how they teach their young to fish is pretty incredible. Anyway just have had the r6mk2 for a couple weeks and just love it. I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know that I'm completing confused on how the heck you don't have a couple million subscribers?? Your a big inspiration to me and you photos are just amazing brother. I'm 57 years old and pretty much strictly wildlife with occasional landscape or lightning photography. Keep up the amazing journey you have yourself on.

WOW!! Thank you for the nice tip about taking photos of the common wildlife, truthfully I had never considered that. All of your videos are just awesome, they are actually the best instructional videos about photography that I have seen on RU-vid. Thank you.

great tips. Being a rookie photographer you brought up a couple of points I been trying to find the perfect photo opportunity. Get out and shoot and have fun with it. I have been taking photos of the local birds at out feeder and deer in the front yard, I am getting better at it.

Practice by taking pictures of the commonplace... while recognising that 'the commonplace' is contingent - my 'commonplace' is Tui and Saddleback and Fantail and Kokako and Kiwi and Morepork... oh what I'd give for a Muscovy duck or a decent goose. Hence - how extraordinary that chain-smoking black and red thing seems to me - a bona fide GOAT exotic.
