Hi Lisa, I would like you to know there is a 9 year old girl in Rhode Island who faithfully and joyfully watches every one of your videos! She has been on her own chicken journey (along with the rest of our family) and we happily apply many things we have learned from you. Even our pickiest egg eater in the family has become a creamed egg eating fan! So thank you for all you do!!!! 🤗

Thank you for sharing your experiences! Have you ever considered adding a droppings board under your roosts , that catches the droppings and you clean off every morning.. I use PDZ coop fresh sprinkled on top of the board… it was a game changer for me!
@FreshEggsDaily

Yes, I tried one and honestly I HATED it! It was gross and just one more thing to clean. I just flip the straw with a rake. Much quicker and easier. Then it all gets composted when I clean out the coop.

What is the best roof for a chicken coop? My coop is nearly 100 years old and the roof is so rotted it’s about to fall in. Shingles or metal? Thanks, videos are great and provide tips that you don’t hear anywhere else! 🐔🐥🐤🐣🐓
@FreshEggsDaily

I think shingles. The metal would be loud when it rains!

So glad I found this video. We are converting our grown daughters’ playhouse into a coop because it’s bigger (9x7) and we have wondered if we were making a mistake because we thought we would ruin it but seeing your coop and how great it looks puts my mind at ease. We will keep our first coop (4x6) with only food and water (in winter) with no access to nest boxes and no roost bar. We will keep food and water outside and NOT in the new coop for the reasons you stated. The new coop is insulated, dry walled and has electricity. I’ll search your videos to see if you show your ventilation. We have 5 windows in our coop but won’t leave windows open when we get heavy midwest storms (Nebraska).

Too much work for me. I tried that but it's just really gross. I prefer for the poop to fall into the bedding, then I turn it with a rake.

I always wondered if you could use pine needles/straw for the litter on the floor...no one has ever said that you can, except you. I already use leaves. There are lots of pine trees in my yard and I'd like to be able to use the straw also.

What about pine flakes for their bedding? That’s what I’ll be using for my chick brooder come Spring, and people really seem to love it
@FreshEggsDaily
@FreshEggsDaily 3 года назад
I find shavings of any kind very dusty. I use straw, I wouldn't recommend anything but straw in the winter here in Maine especially because of its warmth. Pine does smell nice though and has some lovely minor pest-repelling qualities. I recently started using hemp bedding from Eaton Hemp and like that alot. It's not dusty like shavings and stays dry for a long time.
@mindywampler1635
@mindywampler1635 Год назад
Straw and hay have a tendency to attract moisture causing mold & fungi to form, which can cause disease in your birds. A thin layer on top of shavings is ok. We found this out the hard way! Gotta keep those chics happy! 🐓 We turn our bedding every day also. We also put a tiny bit of Apple Cider Vinegar ( organic, with the mother, like “Braggs”) in their drinking water to keep them healthy!

2 questions??? If tge chickens stay out most of tge time .then how do they lay tgere eggs if you keep them out most of tge day ..and I tried straw seemed straw always attracted mice..so I went to sand ..that was scooping poop..my husband is building another coop that can be washed out and a drain pipe run out into our woods ..I like the look of your flooring. But I'm just afraid of rats ..we are in the woods ..your coup is cute ..gives me ideas ..tks

They can come and go in and out of the coop. They come in, lay they eggs and go back outside. I switched to hemp coop bedding in the summer and love it. Maybe try that.

A big thing I noticed since you didn't really show everything the roost bars are way to close to the wall no Chicken could roost comfortably there they also are to flat Two bye three's and two by fours are best for roosting Chickens
@FreshEggsDaily
@FreshEggsDaily Год назад
Thanks for your comment. Maybe its the angle, but my chickens absolutely do roost on the top bars. Every. single. night. For more than 2 years now. The boards are 2x4's so I'm not sure what you mean by too flat? The flat side should always be facing up. You might learn more about roosting bars here.www.fresheggsdaily.blog/2015/11/all-about-roosting-bars-in-your-chicken.html

My coop floor is dirt so I add pine shavings but if I don’t change it often starts to smells like ammonia. Any suggestion on this?
@FreshEggsDaily
@FreshEggsDaily 3 года назад
Add a plywood floor covered with vinyl flooring on top of the dirt. Then change the shavings on a regular basis. Any coop needs to be cleaned regularly.

How do you keep the ducks out of the nest boxes. I cant keep mine clean because the ducks are in there. I have closed it off as you described but then my chickens don't have a nest box to lay in. I recently took the duck out of my chicken coop and put them in a little area by themselves because they mess up the coop so bad. Now I have 2 areas to clean instead of one. Any ideas would be great!
@susankoch1319
@susankoch1319 3 года назад
Shhh.. I’ve read you’re not supposed to keep the ducks and chickens together. So you are ok
@FreshEggsDaily
@FreshEggsDaily 3 года назад
Well I would raise the boxes up off the floor so the ducks can't use them. I assume they're sleeping in them? Thats why they make a mess? Also, I assume you don't leave feed or water inside? Always outside. That keeps things cleaner.
@FreshEggsDaily
@FreshEggsDaily 3 года назад
We've raised chickens and ducks together for 12 years just fine. Where ever you read that - its not correct.

Yes no food or water. The boxes are built into my pen.

@@wabbit4554 I guess giving the ducks their own house is best. The good thing is the chicken coop will stay a lot cleaner and not need cleaning as often.
