Tips for Formatting Your Book for Editing Success

Spending hours setting your book up to look just the way you want it to look might make you feel good, but it's not going to make your editor very happy. The happier your editor is and the easier you make their job, the more likely you are to get a great edit of your book faster!
In this video, author and founder of Self-Publishing Services Company Book Launchers explains the things that make it easier for an editor to do a great job of polishing your manuscript to perfection. Some formatting steps can make sense in Microsoft Word for your editor but many of the formatting things authors do before sending their book to an editor have to be stripped down!

The only one space after a period still gets me. I have to search for “. “ and replace with “. “ at least once during a proof edit.

Great tip about Google Docs! Thank you!! I didn’t know about the clunkiness with larger files. Makes sense!! What are your thoughts on typing in a particular font? Is there a set one like in APA that editors prefer?

When editing what we are looking for is typos and errors. I.e. grammar, spelling, and style. You could literally use notepad and send a plaintext file. Formatting and editing are two different steps. I would suggest double spaced with times new roman 12 point and that's it. You want to do edit and format as separate steps because they both require attention to detail and each distracts from the other. It's like tying your shoes and walking. Can't effectively do both at once, yet complementery.

Here's a fun editing problem: a book which uses styles! Oh, about 200 of them ... and their inconsistent. And no, there's no way to automatically conform them. For once I don't think regex can save it.

Or ... maybe I am actually a human that sometimes doesn't even realize what I have said. 😂 I figure most people will figure it out in the end but thanks for pointing it out. I do use Mac but I don't use Pages. I don't like it. :)
