Finally a helpful video on dry socket, I’ve been in agony for the past few days and has to wait out the weekend before going back. I had a wisdom and impacted molar pulled 4 days ago. Idiot dentist told me it’d be like this for 5 more weeks but all the information I can find is a few more days so I’m relieved to see that. Thank you for the information!

This has been exponentially helpful. Experiencing dry socket after a traumatic removal. I have been on a high hormone birth control for endo and had no idea that could affect a tooth extraction. Going through hell trying to heal. This helped easy my mind about the process and give me some hope for a light at the end of the tunnel.

I am currently dealing with a dry socket. My tooth was a difficult extraction so this explains the pain. The clot really never fully developed so by day 3 it was over the top radiating to the ear and eye. Thanks for explaining what you did. One good tip, for anyone having to do an extraction to reduce the chances of having a dry socket. Have a deep clean done beforehand on the same day, by scaling and cleaning your mouth of tartar and plaque, it gets rid of a lot of bacteria which would otherwise affect the bloodclot, so this in essence will prep your mouth for the extraction. It will cost more, but will help to heal your extraction quicker and leave your mouth feeling fresh.

@@OnlineExodontia my dentist gave me one of those. Unfortunately, I messed up on two things. 1. Was that I didn't know how hard i had to bite on gauze, so I bled fora few hours. 2. I missed a part of the paper that told me I should avoid rinsing, which is something I did when I got home a few hours after the dentist appointment (this was before I properly bit on gauze). I am currently on day 6, and it appears that I am healing normally. One of my sutures fell out today. I hope that won't be troublesome in the future.

Hey y'all clove oil was a life saver when i had dry socket and couldn't get to a dentist every couple days. Once i was diagnosed i got it cleaned out, kept it cleaned out and then used clove oil on gauze on it and its the only thing that touched the pain. Weird i know, but if you have a dry socket youll try anything desperately to relieve the pain. I tried this that someone told me and it worked. Now im sharing it anytime i see dry socket cause that was literally the worst.

I don't have dry socket as it was done just a few hours ago, but I am trying to do EVERYTHING I can to avoid this nightmare. I have been a pack a day smoker for nearly 6 years and I haven't had a single one since I left the office... I am about ready to slam my head through the wall but I figure the nicotine cravings must be better than dry socket.. not taking any chances. Great information, it is useful to know that the pain will gradually subside in approximately 7 days. Also to know That it is a common complication from surgery, and it will heal on its own with growth over the hole. If one can deal with the pain using ibuprofen, no need to go to the dentist. hohohoda n when the dentist pulls it out a blood clot is supposed to form in the hole after he’s done it’s why they tell you not to suck through the straw, smoke and other stuff because the sucking motion can dislodge the blood clot and if you do (which I did) it leaves the hole open leaving exposed bone and the pain is just god awful your whole side of the face throbs and it just feels horrible you don’t want to get one try your best to avoid it but if you do end up getting one you can go back to the dentist they have this awesome stuff that takes the pain away it’s called Dry Socket Paste it tastes horrible but once you get it in oh my god it’s like such a relief lol I had to do that once and not again lol

Having dry socket right now, because of part of blood clot washed away a week ago. I took painkillers containing Diplofenak Epolamin three times each day and was rinsing my mouth with Baking soda mixed in warm water after eating and before sleeping. Baking soda and water mixture was especially good to ease the swelling and pain. Today is the first day that my pain is easing after a week and I did not take any painkillers.

I don’t know if I have dry socket this is my third day and it’s still aching I don’t taste nor smell any bad odor in my mouth but I’m having anxiety having this because of the ache and the ache around the area because my dentist haven’t said anything what are the do’s and don’ts so I’m basically just searching online. I don’t smoke, didn’t brush my teeth really for a day after the extraction, did the cold compress and salt water, didn’t drink from straw and just eat porridge until now. Day 2 evening, that’s when I started to feel the pain, I’m going back to my dentist just to make sure.

Thank you for your clear and informative video 🙂 So I'm on day 2, and I have unknowingly done all the things I shouldn't have : used a straw (to drink soup), smoked (only about 5 a day) and ended up spitting the clot out whilst trying to sleep thinking it was a bit of food stuf in there. Ive learnt I have dry socket with the symptoms of that foul saliva taste, smelly breath and swollen glands under my jaw and round my ear. I've been running with salt water and have put a fresh gaunt in then ringed my mouth with mouth wash to prevent that taste seeping through - seems to do the trick... But would that infect / irritate the gum?
@OnlineExodontia

That shouldn't be a problem for the gum Ms Maglorie, but certainly if you start noticing more symptoms, follow-up with your dentist. All the best!

Thank you for this info! I just had all lower teeth, and an upper wisdom and molar, extracted today. So, I'm bracing for dry socket(s). I have a question: Someone in the comments below suggested putting Clove Oil on a cotton ball or gauze. Do you think doing so might help??
@OnlineExodontia
@OnlineExodontia 3 года назад
I would refrain from doing anything prior to experiencing the symptoms and / or diagnosis of dry socket. Placing anything foreign in the site while healing will only compromise the site further. I assume you're asking if this would help IF you got a dry socket...Clove oil from what I've been told by patients seems to help for some pains in the mouth, but I really can't give you a solid answer on that other than just anecdotal evidence. All the best in your recovery!

I did something like this- I was working a month long gig (no days off) and got my bottom right wisdom removed the day prior to my flight to my gig. I smoked, I ate crunchy things, then met my match on about day 4. Thank God my Dentist gave me tons of amoxicillin, Ibuprofen, and Tylenol, or I wouldn’t have been able to make it. I would clean the site myself by removing any food with one of those poke tools, and tweezers/ cotton swabs, and then rinse the site with salt water. I then would brush my teeth & I had medicated toothpaste at the time for my gums, so I figured it would help. Afterwards, I would rinse again and then squeeze oragel inside and packing wet gauze in the hole- following up with taking one ibuprofen 500 & one Tylenol 500 & amoxicillin. Slowly it got better, and then I realized the gums were healing/ closing. I feel no pain as of now (2 months later) but it definitely took about 16/17 days post extraction to finally have a 90% better sense of relief.

I'm on day 4 right now and it's been the worst. I almost vomited from the pain. I had my general dentist pull the tooth and it ended up being a traumatic extraction. The tooth broke into 4 pieces and it was like 4 extractions in 1. The first day was sore but tolerable, days two and three it felt a lot better, then BAM day 4 I had gum pain, jaw pain and it was unbearable. It's Friday evening so I can't see my dentist until Monday. Ibuprofen and Tylenol have not helped. The only thing that worked was today I went and got Red Cross Toothache with eugenol and packed the socket with it - I was worried it was going to sting bad and it didn't - you just have to be very careful not to touch other parts of your mouth it will sting - but it's decreased the pain probably by 80% and has made it at least tolerable until it's over and can see my dentist.

Dealing with this right now. What I'm really worried about is residual food debris. The pain is manageable, and I've only been eating 'solid' food once or twice a day. Otherwise it's yogurt or low sugar smoothies. I take ibuprofen, then eat, and by the time I'm done eating and giving my teeth a quick brush, that's when I grab my monoject to irrigate the food out of the socket. That way the medicine is fully kicking in by then. My worry is that it seems like I can never get all the particles out, there's always a little bit that doesn't want to lift out and clings to the interior. It waves around and looks like if I just irrigated harder it would flush out, but I don't want to be too aggressive on such a sensitive area. The roots still have clots in the bottoms of them and I'd hate to dislodge them. There's some exposed bone between the roots and I think that's what's causing the discomfort. For clarification, it's a lower first molar and the clot never formed properly and was almost completely gone by the third day. Everytime I would eat anything there was a little less there when I went to irrigate. For irrigation and mouth rinsing, I bought a 12 pack of 12 oz bottled water and use 1 - 1 1/2 tsp of fine table salt to create a clean saline rinse solution. Like I said, the pain is manageable. I'm just concerned about the residual food particles that don't want to come out. I may try using a tiny amount of hydrogen peroxide to water. I found this video very helpful. It made me feel better to know that it will heal on it's own.

It was a week ago yesterday so this is the 8th day. Didn't feel the pain till about the 6th day. Rinsing with salt water and taking motrin . Hoping this will go away soon without having to go back and have him cut me open again.

I got seven teeth (4 wisdom, 2 baby molars, one adult molar) removed on June 26th (9 days ago) and i got a dry socket about day 4. I went back to the dentist and they put that paste in my socket. The pain has stopped but every time i do a rinse, especially on my left side a yellowish color comes out with my saliva. Also my swelling has went down significantly but there is a bump under my left chin towards the back of my jaw. When do you think swelling will be completely gone and is it normal for the paste to natural come out of the socket? Also thanks for the very informative video
@OnlineExodontia
@OnlineExodontia 2 года назад
Swelling should be decreasing by day 3 so if you're still swollen and have yellowish fluid coming from the socket, it's possible you could have some infection. Probably best to follow-up with your provider. All the best!

Buy a plastic or rubber tipped syringe from the drug store. Too many dentists send us home without something to properly flush out the socket. If you're having bottom teeth removed, it's a very high chance of happening no matter how careful you are. I used it to flush with salt water and the pain substantially improved by doing that. Applying some orajel or any other brand around the gums was also another life saver. The ibprofen and Tylenol did an okay job, but it really only takes the edge off when you're dealing with dry socket. Just my two cents after dealing with absolute agony for 5 days, lol.

Hello, I got my wisdom teeth removed on October 20th, on the 22nd I went back to to dentist because I fear that I had dry socket. They irrigated the extraction points and said they are healing nicely and I didn’t have dry socket. However, it is now the 26th and for today and the past two days I have had a constant dull pain in my lower left extraction point and when I look at it in the mirror I see what I believe to be bone. There is also an indent on my cheek in that area that I’m not sure what it is. I feel as though I do have a case of dry socket. I do take a contraceptive pill that I’ve read causes weak or no blood clots to form as you mentioned. What are your thoughts on how I should go about the rest of my recovery. I’ve been taking acetaminophen and ibuprofen interchangeably but so often that it’s not working as long anymore and have been doing numerous salt water rinses. Thank you and I hope you see this!
@OnlineExodontia
@OnlineExodontia 3 года назад
Hi Mackenzie - sorry to hear that you're having troubles with your extraction site. It's tough to diagnose without seeing you, however it does sound like something is not quite right. Dry socket for most is very intense. Typically Tylenol and Ibuprofen don't even touch it. You mentioned it's helping, but working less than it was. If you find the pain is increasing and you're not able to taper off of your pills, then there is a chance you could have a dry socket. By 6 days post-op your pain should be decreasing significantly. The indent in your cheek is likely where the incision was made, but that's just a guess. If you are concerned, there is no harm contacting your dentist / surgeon again to see what they say. I realize this doesn't solve the problem, but hopefully it helps. All the best and thanks for watching!

Doctors need to stop relying on conversation to instruct the patient of what to do. Important details can be easily missed or forgotten especially when the patient is already managing pain and stress when they come in. The on paper directions my oral surgeon gave me don't even allude to the need to keep a blood clot in place. Just reading through it otherwise uninformed the gauze is just for stopping the bleeding and "dry socket" is caused by smoking. The instruction sheet never even tells you what dry socket is.

I developed two dry sockets and my dentist/ oral surgeon told me to take 3 ibuprofen and one Tylenol every 4 hours. It’s been around a week since my wisdom tooth extraction ( all 4) and my dentist said he wouldn’t be able to do anything. I haven’t gotten my dry sockets cleaned or anything and I’m just wondering if I need to go to the dentist in order to make sure it heals? Or can I continue with my at home care and wait for it to heal on my own? I’m quite confused.
@OnlineExodontia
@OnlineExodontia 3 года назад
Dry sockets are self-resolving with enough time. What I tell patients is if you can manage your pain with Advil / Tylenol and you're functioning okay, continue with that approach as long as the pain is decreasing day by day. If the pain is too much for those basic meds, or if it's staying steady or increasing, it's best to visit the dentist so they can flush the sites and evaluate whether or not they could benefit from a dressing of some kind. Hope that helps! I wish you well!
