I'm running in super hot climate and I'm a tad bit faster than my missus, but I love running with her. It's always a guarantee I can do a proper Zone 2 long run (sometimes up to 2 hours) because of the pace difference. She still does feel guilty for the slower pace, no matter how many times I told her it's great for me, because I struggle to keep myself slow enough for slow runs.
Loved the discussion of running with others. My husband started running with me this year. He's fast, but doesn't run the distances I do. We've discovered that running with me means he truly can have an "easy" run (I'm usually doing a tempo!) and I am motivated to run faster for longer. Best of both words!
You should definitely do it for longer and do the weekly quizzes, it was great that the quiz was linked into the main topic so we get to learn more about the main topics of the podcast that we might not of learned without the quiz. Either way keep it going!!
My pace is about 18 minute/mile. Hard for anyone to run that slow. If I wanted to run "with" someone, we would figure out the difference in total time and I would start out that much sooner. This way, we pass each other and just about finish together. The passing would give me something to look forward to.
I'd be happy to listen to longer episodes!! Hearing your stories and running news keeps me interested in running when I don't feel like going out for a run! Also I agree with what Rick said about it being emotional running a race in your own city. I did the Great North Run as my first half marathon last year and it was so emotional starting in a city I know so well 🥹 (and running along roads and the bridge when you normally couldn't 😂)
Longer podcast would be great for long runs. You’re on my list with a small amount of others. Maybe some standing features (the quiz was great 😂beep); interviews; specific training tips; whatever. Keep staring at those fields. When you know you know.
I’m running my second Boston on Monday and cannot wait!! Where will you be spectating? I would love to see you out on the course ❤ Enjoy the run Sarah - be prepared for lots of rolling hills the whole way 😊😊 PS: would love the podcast to be longer xxx
Jokes were amazing(ly bad) but also funny... Podcast 30' please. Just thinking back on running London, I was completely fine after and had a pint of bitter (in my drop off bag), chocolate milk, tea, water and probably other things mixed in too. It was all a great experience but the worst was being so tired and not being able to sleep because I was so excited and my legs were just buzzing warmly.
I’m catching this way late but I do appreciate the question about running with others at a different pace. (And I weep at Sarah’s comments about disliking computer games…)
Recently, Roger Robinson, who is Catherine Swizter's husband/partner, and also my former uni lecturer, ran our local park run. This was in training for a race over in Australia. Roger is in his 80s.
I suppose there are already several people who have reported and pointed this out before me... Although she has passed, not without merit although not complete, as the first woman to officially complete the Boston Marathon, Katherine Switzer was not really the first woman to complete it, since than a year earlier (April 19, 1966) Roberta Louise (Bobbi) Gibb with a time of hours, 21 minutes and 40 seconds. In 1996 Bobbi Gibb would be recognized as the winner of the 1966 Boston Marathon. Also in 1967 and 1968. Years in which the athlete ran again, again without a number and without registration - the participation of the Women in the event would not be officially allowed until 1972-, and in which they crossed the finish line again with times similar to those of 1966 (3h 27' and 17'', and 3h30' respectively). Her name, Roberta Louise Gibb, was inscribed in the Boston Athletic Associations Museum. Today she is considered one of the most influential athletes in women's fight for sex equality in the world of sports.
Longer podcast would be great. Keeping me entertained on my long runs. I was laughing out loud on my long run at the jokes (more about how bad they were) 😂
In this day and age, there are still many cycling races women aren't allowed (tour de france), unless she is a hostess celebrating the gentleman's victory...
The great thing about Kathrine Switzer (actually, there are many) is that after her run at Boston in 1967 she became a life-long activist for women in sports. She's an amazing human being. Also, Jock Semple made many appearances together over the years, but I don't think they were ever "friends."
I love the idea of a longer podcast if y'all are up for it. Also, I love Rick's jokes and think the chemistry between you three is awesome! Cheers, TRC crew!
I ran my first marathon last year with a Garmin tracker going. My mom kept texting my wife "It says his heart rate is 150! Is that okay?" "Now it says 160!" "He's heart rate is up and he's slowed down, do you think he is okay?" She definitionally thought I was going to have a heart attack on the route.
Yes please to longer podcasts. Currently they’re over too quickly 😭. Could also do bonus/special guest episodes when needed or for cover 😁 🏃🏻🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻🏃♀️😃
It would be good to hear from Coach Andy who has helped you all with your training and races - get his take on training from the other side. Also Eilish McColgan would be good on how she’s found transitioning from track to Half Marathons & hopefully Marathons and how she’s coped with online bullying (though she maybe a little busy atm) 😃
I finished my second London Marathon in my 60's running over the line with my eldest son, which is and will I am sure always be my favourite running monent. On the running with others I also thoroughly recommend your local running club and parkruns. I also really enjoy running with my wife of 42 years even though she is a few minutes a kilometre slower than me.
Did you know our Queensland course (Goldcoast Marathon)is a Boston qualifier course and our Sydney course just changed thier course to apply to become a 7th Major. Exciting times for running ❤ 🇦🇺
When I finished Manchester yesterday I drove home (only live 30 miles away) dropped some people off , got a 6 piece bucket of KFC (staff thought I was mad as I refused the extra's) , and sat in an epsom salt bath while eating hot fried Chicken .. now that is my Diva ritual that I have done since I used to race Spartan OCR's 🤣
Boston is a true runners marathon with need to qualify...London is a glorified charity event...have watched London many times..hardly anyone watches the elite event..people just come out to shout at people dressed as Dinosaurs..appreciate it raises millions for charity..but personal preference would be if it was more like Boston...great podcast 🙂
Aren't Chicago, New York, and Tokyo all in the Northern Hemisphere, and so would all be spring just now? Or are you meaning they not all run in spring?
I actually think that Eilish McColgan may just take victory in London. I still find it weird that I used to cheer on my mum and even weirder that she messages me sometimes. I'm a massive fan!
I love the fact that "there are so many barriers to entry for female runners" but a GFA time to qualify for Boston for a woman of a certain age is sub 3:30 whereas the equivalent male is sub 3:00. These races do all they can to advantage women to line up and allocate spots to them.
