I haven't planted bulbs, but the previous owner planted Daffodils. Every spring they come up. I've lived here for almost 15 years and I'm always greeted by my spring Daffodils.

I started using the Power Planter auger this year and will never go back. I purchased the 12" version which is perfect for tall tomato seedlings and makes quick work for bulbs. Highly recommended but a good idea to keep a plastic bag around the drill to keep dirt from sneaking inside.

Omg. Thank you so much. This is perfect for the new bed in the front I'm prepping for spring flowers. Zone 10B! You rock!!!

I ordered bulbs from American Meadows this year. They were having a great sale. Hope they all come up. Bulbs have been in the fridge and I’ll put them out in December. So good that you made this video for new gardeners who live in mild climate (SoCal). We really have to follow a later planting schedules. The “traditional methods” from bulb planting to pruning perennials is so different based on our planting and growing seasons.

I've planted tulips and crocus almost every year for 15-20 years here in So Cal. I I didn't grow up here and tulips and crocus represent spring to me! Dutch Bulbs is a good company - I use the often. You aren't planting crocus, but I've had success with them coming back for a few years, so I braid the spiky leaves together after they are done blooming. that way they don't look quite so messy as they turn brown. I have my bulbs still in the fridge. I usually plant the week between Christmas and NY holiday.

@You Tube I usually plant them in the ground, but I have planted them in containers as well. I dig up the tulips because I'm usually wanting to plant something else in that area. I have a very limited space where I can grow. You can probably leave the alliums and daffodils to bloom again but the tulips won't bloom again.

I’m a bulb-a-holic! I like them because their usually cheap, many come back year after year and easy to maintain for the most part. I probably most like Day Lillies and Iris because of the selection of colors but have started with more daffodils in my unfenced front yard because of the the deer.

Daffodils are my all-time favorite flowers. Freesias will naturalize in SoCal also. My kids used to call them Froot Loop flowers due to their sweet scent.

I think your bulb bed is going to be so pretty! Many years ago actually 50 years ago I planted tulips. I live in Houston so I had to refrigerate them for a hike but it was so worth it. This year I planted about 30 daffodils bulbs and only three came up but never bloomed. I was so sad but that’s gardening, right? You inspired me to try again. Thanks Brian. God bless.🌷

That’s really good to know about how long the bulbs need the cold before planting them! As I decided to hold back planting some in the outside gardens and force some indoors in January as I love tulips in January onwards. So I’ll put them in the fridge in another week and then plant them in a pot indoors with grow lights late December so I can have tulips in January! 🤞😉

I’m in Georgia. This is my first time doing Fall planting but mine are already in the ground. I tried Holland bulb farms . I ordered a lot of different types of flowers because of their specials at the times .The bulbs look healthy and now the wait to see if they are going to produce and hopefully naturalize

Thank you! I needed this video. Since this is my first year gardening, I have never planted bulbs before, and I'm actually nervous about it. I was watching Laura (Garden Answer) plant bulbs and I got inspired to order bunch of bulbs (as if I know what to do with them lol). According to the company I ordered from (Eden Brothers), they will ship the bulbs when it's time to plant them in my zone (10b). I ordered Tulips, Dahlias, Daffodils, Hyacinth, Ranunculus, Freesia, and Anemone 😳. I wish you were my neighbor (so you could help me, and make sure I don't screw up). I love how detailed you are, and all the info you provide. I'm going to have to come back to this video again when I receive my bulbs, and when I'm ready to plant. I better clean out my refrigerator so I have room for the bulbs. Is it true that we shouldn't keep apples in the refrigerator because it will damage the bulbs🤔

I CAN'T WAIT to see your flowers start to bloom. It's going to look AMAZING! I have a quick question. I have irises growing and I would love your thoughts and tips on how to separate them. Had them in the same bed for 15 years. The "bulbs?" are practically growing on top of eachother and I wish to thin them out and maybe move the extras to a different spot. How do I do that without damaging them and when do I do it? I live in Los Angeles.

I got a lily in a pot a couple of years ago - it bloomed once and then died back over winter. I left it alone and it came back this year with many blooms! I am going to plant it in the garden this winter and see how long it will come back. We have expanded our ornamental garden space, and I will be trying many more bulbs this year as well.

Irises are rhizomes not blubs. You should divide them at least every 3 to 4 years, don't let them get to crowded. When you divide them break off the old rhizomes part and plant the new rhizome part and roots shallow in the ground. They don't like to be buried deep. You can google how to grow Irises videos too. I hope this helps. I have over 200 Irises. When they multiply to much I just give them away. They also to be more dry than wet.

Rannunculus grow like crazy here in zone 10a. I’ve planted a plot every year for the last 30 years or so. I suggest planting them on 10” centers as thy send up multiple stems.

@@NextLevelGardening Hi Brian. I dig them up after they’re done blooming and plant summer flowers in that plot. I save the corms and grow the following year. After the second planting they pretty much poop out and I buy new.
@farmerbob4554
@farmerbob4554 3 года назад
@You Tube I store them in plastic bags with a few holes punched in them and with potting mix in the bag along with the corms. They go into a drawer in the shed.

@You Tube Hi. They won’t tolerate summer temps. If you plant rannunculus now they will bloom in late March through the middle of May. I plant them along with Freesia second week in November.

My husband got an auger for me at an auction. It's awesome!! Colorblends .com , has a section daffodils for the south. Probably the daffodils in that section would be more likely to naturalize. They're sold out of everything right now though it's way too late. I'm going to have to try ranunculus!

Something odd here. My Daffodils always bloom at this time of the year, not Spring. Many are blooming now, and most are budded. If my memory is correct, the Black Eyed Susans are next. The daisies and roses are showing off, too.
@rivitraven

Over here in the south there is a natural bulb-like growing plant that has the same shape of a clover leaf. They're called sorrel. You can pull the bulbs out and they have little baby ones on the side and they easily fall off and grow back the next year. Somewhat annoying, but the flowers are really beautiful violet in color and the clover leaves are huge.

We thought about doing this, but we are worried about getting too much frost this year. Here in Florida we have had some warm winters for the past few years but this year feels different.

Hi, I live in Hawaii in a rented property and I want to grow tulips in a 20 gal smart pot. I have my bulbs in my refrigerator already and it will be 8 weeks on the 20th. I have some forget me not seeds and thought planting them with the orange/red tulips that I got would be perfect. Do you have any advise for planting both of these together in a 20gal grow bag? Also, how much should I be water the bulbs (with the forget me nots seeds growing)?

No wonder my tulips never came back the next year! Ha! I have daffodils galore, and adding crocus in a few weeks. What's the reason behind tulips not naturalizing?

Gayle... you may have voles. These little beasties are herbivores and love bulbs excluding narcissus. I have moles which are carnivorous and not a threat; however, the moles dig tunnels that are used by the voles. I have planted so many tulips and lilies resulting in very happy voles. I'm exploring all options. Good luck!

Apparently hyacinth stem length is determined by the length of cold. One year I never got around to planting them til spring... they bloomed inside the bulb! Or maybe it was the lack of water during the winter?

I’m not right - the max setting on my battery powered drill shows a picture of a drill bit. That one could break a ladies wrist.

Also, we live in an area where the soil has lots of rocks, the drill auger lasted exactly one drill. It hit a rock, broke the auger and destroyed the drill.

Plus you can easily chew up your sprinkler pipes with an auger if you don't know exactly where the pipes are located.
