Thinking of making a quilt from your old clothes? Worried about how to sew heavy wool, loose weaves or slippery silks? Using a Steeplechase quilt top, I show you how I create my own scrap quilts in the Agosia Arts studio. I use all the fabrics most people think are tricky or difficult and I've developed my own techniques to solve typical problems. This video covers planning and constructing the quilt top, but not the quilting.

Thank you SO much for this video! I started quilting not quite three years ago specifically so I could make a quilt using my grandmother's and mother's unused vintage fabric and I've been so disappointed in the lack of videos, books, and general resouces about using reclaimed material in quilting. The focus seems almost entirely on brand new cotton fabrics from commercial fabric designers. I love your approach! This is what quilting was from the beginning and I feel deeply we need to get back to it.

I'm glad the info was helpful to you. I get responses just like yours regularly and I'm always amazed so few artists address this issue. Plenty of people use clothing, but for some reason, don't talk about it. Well, sometimes they talk too much about it and use language that's a bit over the top. I do know there are a few books out there about using clothing, but most focus on a particular type of fabric (denim) or clothing (shirts or ties); they are tend to be very project-based. You know, make a bag like this, or cushion cover like this one. I don't know why there is so much hesitation about using non-cottons. I guess this speaks to the strength of the quilting marketing machine and maybe also to the ease of sewing with medium weight cotton (once you've done it, you don't want anything else). Where have people learned that sewing with wool or silk is hard? I don't know. Sigh. I do love sewing with fabric from clothing because it has a suppleness that new fabric just doesn't have. If there is one takeaway I can offer you it's to just dive right in. Use whatever appeals to you, but test a little bit first. Try sewing a short seam, then pressing it open. Those two steps will tell you most of what you need to know to go on from there. You'll learn what stitch length you need to use, how your fabric behaves when doubled and how well it presses flat. If things don't go as you expect (this will happen!), you can adjust. Best of luck to you with your family's fabrics - what a treasure! Happy sewing!

Thank you so much! I decided to get into quilting with the express purpose of reusing old clothing to minimize waste. However, almost all quilting tutorials are for new fabrics. This is very helpful.

Glad you found it useful! I wish more quilters would discuss this issue. We are inundated with beautiful fabrics in the stores, but sadly, people aren't even useing everything they purchase! One of the less discussed side-effects of the beautiful quilt fabric conundrum is that new sewers are not learning how to use different types of fabric. I suspect, back in the day, new sewers would learn using scraps. Best wishes in your new adventure! My one piece of advice is to look for fabrics that are 100% (or as close as possible) natural fibers and wash the crap out of them before you start stitching. Natural fibers feel better to the skin and you want to know right away if they are going to fall apart. Otherwise, be fearless!

Being frugal is the original idea in quilting. But still I would use same material, cotton with cotton, wool with wool etc in the same quilt. And nearly the same material weight and matching colors of course as you do. And I would not go through the trouble of sewing an curved seam. I would do the circles as applique.

You've inspired me to begin collecting thrift-bound or purged clothing pieces from my family to do a quilt like this. Thank you for the various tips! I'm excited to finally find another project after finishing my daughter's quilt a few weeks ago. I always struggle to move my focus and be inspired for the next piece to spend a couple of months creating after finishing the previous one. Happy quilting y'all and stay creatively-fearless!! 😁👍

Good luck! Using clothing for quilts is a time-honored method. I'm sure you will make something beautiful! My one bit of advice is that if you are a beginner, try not to use too much denim. It is so heavy and doesn't behave like other fabrics.

This video is great! I made two handcut jelly roll quilts using any kind of fabric I could find (cotton, wool, knits, polyesters, silks). I went at it with adbandon and didn't have most of these tips. The quilts were very interesting but more importantly I learned a lot. This video is so great because it encourages reusing waste. Most of the quilting tutorials have hardfast rules. Be brave!

Good for you! I think quilitng cottons are great, but they definitely spoil people. If you don't use anyting else, you never learn about how other types of fabric behave. I also applaud your enthusiam - it is the perfect way to be when approaching something new! Best of luck, but I don't think you'll need it. 🙂

Thank you! So many people are afraid to use old clothes, but it used to be the standard method. We are spoiled for choice with fabrics, but there are so many wonderful textiles you can find in thrift stores (as clothing) that you can not purchase online or in stores.

I am making memorial quilts from my dad's shirts. Unfortunately most are 60% cotton/40% poly. But you gave me confidence to proceed because they are same weight as cotton. And one thing, they have washed a million times. I prefer natural fibers as well. But thank you for sharing & helping me move forward!

@@AgosiaArts No problem! I am currently making a coat by adding applique patches, but with a little batting in them for warmth. So when I saw your video in my feed I thought hey, that might be useful at some point! I had a look at your website too! I hope the doldrums have passed! It happens. The good thing is, it doesn't last forever, it just feels like it does sometimes. Just as sunny spots don't stay sunny forever, neither do gloomy ones. Clouds always pass right? I suppose this is a little blah, blah blah for a comment section but I figure mostly just the vlog makers read these. :)

I love ur quilt pattern. I too, only use clothing for all I sew. I upcycle clothes, & crumb “quilt”(I call them blankets, I don’t think my sewing& material are up to quilt status) & make patterned blankets. I use all materials, fluffy with T-shirt , u just hv to take it slow. Again, love ur pattern, thx for ur video. Chris

Hi Robin! Thanks for the kind words. National Quilting Day is this Saturday (the 17th), so this is the perfect time to start a new quilt. Using old clothes is a time-honored technique and I wish more people felt comfortable using it. Let me know how your project is coming along and if you have questions. I'll help out if I can! Best regards, CAT

Just discovered your channel and am devouring your videos. I'm also dedicated to upcycled natural fibers and made a small quilt from thrifted men's suiting a few years back. It is everyone's favorite! QUESTION: I am curious where you get silk to upcycle, other than from men's ties. I've rarely found any on the racks of thrift stores. Thanks for sharing your knowhow!
@AgosiaArts
@AgosiaArts 2 года назад
Thank you! Glad to hear there are more upcycler quilters out there. I agree that these quilts have special qualities. Good question about silk! As with all things in fashion, fabrics used in the clothing industry have ups and downs. Silk shirts were popular pre-2000s and there was a big pulse of them in thrift stores that has since declined. Here in the St. Louis area, I still find a lot of silk dresses. Another issue is that some thrift stores have become savvy with the resale market and cull the "best" clothing items for resale online or to brokers. Of course, there are also regional tastes and you find different kinds of things around the country. All of this means it is getting harder to find good quality used fabrics. My best source, by far, is just people. Strangers mostly. I'll wake up and find boxes on my doorstep. I used to work at the public library and people would bring stuff there - it got to be a hassle. Put the word out that you are looking for XYZ and it will come, slowly but surely, it will come. So many people clean out their closets (and older relative's closets) and want the clothes to be used; they are happy to donate to the artistic cause! If you put the word out that you are looking for a type of fabric/clothing and will accept damaged or stained items, I find people jump on that because, they love the idea something will be recycled. Another option is the Buy Nothing Groups on Facebook. I hope it works for you!!!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The one that stuck with me was the idea of overcoming fear of cutting into something. I think this is a common issue for many no matter what the project is. So many people are worried about the outcome and "doing it right" that they never start or consider that the process of making something is part of the enjoyment. Thanks again! Happy stitching, Alana
