Singer/Musician rules to live by: Keys matter, stop/release, peck in secret, no double minded pitch, dont change pre planned keys. ☺😊😀... it boils down to prayer, preparation and practicing your song
Truth be told have a little 2 minute practice before the funeral/service/revival/church anniversary/pastor and wife anniversary what ever it is don't think that you as the singer or musician is so cold that you don't have to practice or at least exchange a key or 2
Also I think that if the singer starts off on another pitch then they need to work on pitch accuracy. I think most don’t switch up the key on purpose they just not practicing.
"Be a discreet pecker"......... I need the usher with the MLK fan, smelling salts and bottled water. I've fallen OUT and cant get up. Even in giving good wisdom you still got me hollering! My Shondo is weak!
These are simple things which adds to professionalism, thank you man!! Sometimes when am finding a key I do a little chromatic run 😊😊sounds more like your doing something constructive but i still do it at a lower volume
This is really real. Don't hit the keyboard until you can sing the note you want to hit. When you can sing the note with the singer and you have it locked, then you'll probably be on. Amazing how keyboard players forget they can sing. If you have a horn player in the band that's been living in a world of transpose buttons, trust he can find the key. Far from perfect pitch but pitch refined by the fire of random electronics. I played a song in 15 keys in the last rehearsal. The transpose button has allowed less skilled keyboard players to serve. However now if you see a horn player in church, he better be a monster. Whatever happened to Ab Db or C? Those were the days.
I play keyboard by ear and I’m not great with chords so I definitely want to get there. I personally never use a transpose button....mainly because I didn’t know it existed nor do I plan on using it since I know my keys. I will agree though that sounds quite lazy and I’ve heard that it may not work that often as well
Lord have mercy I've been through that so many times. I have perfect pitch so I can quickly make adjustments, but man, some of these vocals out here are lost without a home. Lol!
5:46 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ This happened to me! My sister & I were supposed to present something at church. We practiced it so much, always in the same key. Only for us to get on stage and she starts singing in a whole different key! 😭🤦🏾♀️ Then I'm looking foolish with my guitar & I just had to continue strumming in the wrong key until the song finished 😳🤪🤦🏾♀️
These vids are great and so true.. a lot of people do not understand the difficulty of being a musician in the church.. especially where the church is used to a specially gifted or talented musician.. if you peck once all heads are turning.. to you with the did some one take a dump on the pew face..
I did a funeral a few weeks ago. I did 2 songs for 2 singers . One singer we reherarsed before the fenural started. The 2nd song I got when I walked in the church. When the girl asked me if I knew the song I told her I just learned it. When it was time to do her song I played the intro like the record and she changed the key 3 times. By the time she was in the bridge she was a hole step higher than the original. Now when the guy and I did his song it was flawless they didn't let the song go it went so well. Smdh
Bashanvibe I would have just stop playing. I advise singers to have a track. Especially if they sing a lot. Some singes need to train themselves to stay in the key they started in. A track is one of the best instructors with out offending the singer compared to them feeling a certain way when a person try to teach them.
Let the song resolve. They'll usually be in their key after the first chorus no matter how off they start. Just like the police. Distance cover and time. Lay back. Tell the drummer to for sure layout because if the key is shaky the meter is probably too. Learn the word rubato. Meaning the singer is in her own little world we waiting for her to open the door and invite us in. A song can be musically off but minister. But if the musicians play right when the singer can't sing musically right it's a tragedy. If you don't know their version of the song, lay thee out and wait for the preacher reset the order. As great as the musicians role is, sometimes it's for the presiding prelate worship leader to set the order.
Listen to me. I stand my ground when I play now. I've learnt my lesson. Singers, listen here. Sing on key, please. If we've agreed on a key, and I've played an intro for you to give you an idea of where to start (and its in your vocal range as well) I will not adjust to meet you. You need to get yourself aligned, because I'm tired of realigning on your behalf.😂🙄
This is very basic information but many people I have played for do not know these things. The worst is somebody who goes through 5 different keys in the same song. And don't even realize it!
I swear anytime a singer is off it’s always blamed on the musician when it’s not even there fought sometimes singer have problem staying in on key or they just do something wrong musicians get the blame for it
My brother! I've followed you for a while now and you blow my mind with your musicality in every single video! If love to collaborate with you, but wouldn't know how, since my channel is in Spanish! Please check it out LOL I hear your lines of harmonic though, the way you substitute cords, I can't musically think like that!... What book would you recommend? God bless you! Zuriel Rubio
Can you plz train us for ear because i can play in all 12 keys but it is hard for me when there is no someone to guide me by saying go to the 4 or 5 back to 1 move to 6 across diatonic notes/chords
Lord....yes...I've just started to start the song and let them catch up to me. The problem is when our drummer starts upping the tempo so I'm snapping fingers or patting my hip so he'll get where I am. Basically..dude...just stay on the cymbals with some crescendos and decrescendos. If I slow down or speed up...just lemme go.
😅it's the come in for me...lol.... Please make a video on how to find what key is comfortable for your voice....I've met people who can kill absolutely any song in one particular key ...I know it takes some extra work but how do you find yours(to begin with)?
I definitely have a good friend he played very well put I told can't use transposed messing up the song and worship service. Must play regular piano 00
I was there about a month or so ago our church was having a choir celebration our church went first and so everyone that came after us went and a lot just stayed on their instruments so I did too. Some songs I picked up on and joined in some I just sat back and let them do their thing.
I know this an old video. But as a singer and a musician, I feel like I must warn you…many church singers HAVE NO IDEA of their key from song to song. I know you know this…maybe this warning is for someone sitting in a back pew. 😅
I've played for Grammy and stellar award winning artist and have seen them hush people up but they have the priority of coming to the musician before the program and be like do you know such and such and be like what key is in this I'm singing in??? We only need 2 or 3 minutes before a service but they get real nervous and look for another musician in the crowd if you start screwing around with the keys 😁
Hey bro my sis asked me to help her with her praise team now we have 2 cultures of churches blending together and today praise and worship was a freaking disaster ppl in the congregation just picking up mics singing off key both of the worship leaders from the white church are completely tone deaf i need pointers please
My problem is i could play a song in its original key then the next time if I arrives late the guitarist x2 n bass would play the same song in a different key because they don’t remember the original key and or they can’t transposé so I play in their key yet the next time we sing this same song they’re playing it in another key.
Imagine practicing a song with complex chord progressions and modulations and they change the key on you as the song starts..........🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🏃🏾♂️🏃🏾♂️🏃🏾♂️🏃🏾♂️🏃🏾♂️where's the transpose button 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What I don't agree with is.the person start to sing u start to find the key if u press 3 keys an it's not it.the keyboard player most not play.no way .I don't agree on that.what if u start at c an the singer voice is at A sharp.remember most keyboard player go up the scale.an some go down the scale .but the correct way to find a person key .is to start from c so ur going up thr scale till u find that key.so some part of what u saying I don't agree 👍
