Using invisible thread can be a great way to quilt your quilt when you want the fabric and pieced pattern of the quilt top to be the star of the design, rather than the quilting itself. However, using invisible thread can be more challenging that using regular thread like cotton or polyester. ZJ Humbach shares several tips for working with invisible thread and how to make it easier.

Thread Types
ZJ fist explains that there are different types of invisible thread and that some are easier to work with that other. There is nylon invisible thread, which is much stiffer and has a feel similar to fishing line and there is invisible thread that is a polyester blend, which is less stiff and can be easier to work with. ZJ explains some of the attributes of invisible thread and how they can be positive or negative in terms of your project. ZJ also shares how to choose the best thread color and shows that some brands of invisible thread come in different colors, a clear and a smoke color, depending on the color of fabric you plan to quilt on.
Working With Invisible Thread
Once explaining the different types of invisible thread, ZJ give several tips for using invisible thread, including what size of needle to use. She also gives tips on how to wind a bobbin using invisible thread and also what size thread to use in the bobbin if you plan to use a different color thread in the bobbin and invisible thread in the needle. Another tip ZJ shares for using invisible thread, which can be used in conjunction with more quilting tips and techniques, is to use a thread nest over the spool of thread when quilting to ensure the thread winds off of the spool evenly.

Thank you-I picked up invisible thread for first time and could not even get past winding the bobbin! At least after watching your video, I know the problems I'm having are normal. I'll try it again using your tips :)

Fantastic tips. Thanks so much. Wish I'd seen this before I did a project at university and destroyed really expensive fabric by using the invisible thread wrong.

Thanks for the information on the poly thread. I had been using the nylon kind. Do you have tips on how to tie a knot in invisible thread when hand sewing with it. I had an emergency order and ended up taping the ends together so the thread would not go through. THanks again

Thanks for the video. I've always used a size 14 needle in my longarm for monopoly and 18 for all other threads (that is the size Superior prints on the cone). It has worked great until recently. My problem was that I kept getting a long stitch. I would get short perfect stitches for a short time, then one super long one in the top thread, like 2 to 3 inches long. I tried a multiple of things and could not get it to stop doing that. The only thing that helped was to quilt at a snail's pace, which is something I just can't afford to do all the time. It wasn't my machine because as soon as I changed to my regular thread and regular needle, I was fine. It only happened with the monopoly. Do you have any ideas as to why I would get a long stitch? I wondered if I had turned my tension down too much.

I am going to start using my 100% Polyester invisible thread for making seed bead appliques. I chose the invisible thread for obvious reasons. However, I am having a terrible time viewing the thread, of course, lol! Is there a 'trick' to be able to see the thread as I am working with it? Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us all xx

Hi, Yes, that is definitely one of the bad (and good) things about using invisible thread! Since you don't want to necessarily add color to the thread, because it would defeat the reason for using it- I would recommend using light. Sent up a small desk lamp at an angle to your project so that the 'reflects' off the thread a little. This should help you to see it a little better. Cheers, Ashley

Do you leave the net long or cut it to fit the spool?

how do you tie a knot with clear thread when hand sewing I find it best two tack a tattered hole, instead of trying to match thread
@NationalQuiltersCircle
@NationalQuiltersCircle 4 года назад
Hi! 1. Here is an article with four different ways to tie a knot when hand sewing. Clear thread can be tricky beause it doesn't take to knotting like regular thread, however if you double whichever technique you use you will have better luck with it staying in place: sewguide.com/sewing-thread-knot/ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G62uHRefi5E.html Ashley National Quilters Circle

How can I slow down my bobbin wider for invisible thread? I didn't find anything in my instruction book to address that. I have a Bernina 440 an it winds very fast and I don't get good results on the bobbin using invisible thread. I am working on art quilts and there are many colors on the front that I change the thread colors but I don't want the colors to show on the back so I am using invisible thread.

Thanks for contacting the National Quilters Circle. I'm afraid that question may be better asked of a Bernina sewing machine specialist. I'm not aware of anything to regulate the bobbin winder portion of a machine. Contact your local dealer and they should be of assistance. Thanks

I just paid $10 for nylon invisible thread and I already don’t like it. It does break easy. I stretched the material just to see if it would hold and nope you hear it breaking. Very disappointed 😔

So sorry to hear this! Is there any way to return the thread to the vendor?
@loishooper6779
@loishooper6779 2 года назад
If it is nylon invisible thread, it does break and it also turns hard over time. Ask me how I know! You need polyester invisible thread which is much softer and does not harden. And it does not break either. The thread she is using is Superior Monopoly, which comes in clear and smoke colours. More expensive, but you get what you pay for, and the stuff lasts forever. I’ve used it for years in fibre art, and it’s worth every penny.
