Sorry if this sounds kind of ranty - I do think there's merit to mastering the craft of cover letter writing. But I just don't think getting into publishing is as kum ba yah as this video is making it seem. Honestly, now that I'm in the publishing industry and I've spent my fair share of time in the trenches, I can honestly say that half of the "advice" these publishing directors/manager/editors give seem so out of touch with the current job-seeking climate. I spent so much time fretting over advice like this and all it did was make me depressed and feel like an utter failure. I ended up spending majority of lockdown unemployed, crying myself to sleep and desperately clinging to this type of advice, hoping that by some miracle it would make me stand out. But in the end, the cover letter that won me a job wasn't my best, and my interview was a shambles. The main reason I finally got a job in publishing is because I kept in touch with the recruiter and made solid connections within the company. Because let's face it. Traditional publishing houses might be trying to change - very slowly - but they still favour a 'who-you-know' mentality over a 'what-you-know' one. I just hope it gets easier for the next generation of hopefuls.

Sorry that this was your experience, that can’t have been easy. I’m not a manager giving advice though, actually only joined the industry a few years ago so I’m just doing my part to help people. This was a video made fairly recently so I would hope it’s fairly up to date. I would argue the industry is changing as I didn’t ‘know’ anyone in the industry, so for me it was about my CV and cover letters, and not who I knew. This video wasn’t to give false hope but to give genuine advice, which I know has helped other people get into the industry. I’m glad you got to the place you wanted to be though. I also agree - I hope it’s even easier for the next generation!
