Finally a video showing walk in and tub entry that makes sense! Helpful in deciding what I should have on hand before surgery.

They are completely inaccurate and this is highly dangerous. You can not bend your operative knee 90 degrees after a total knee replacement operation. You are supposed to keep the brace on whenever you walk and it can’t get wet. It takes two weeks to be able to bend your knee sufficiently. Stay away from these quacks. Use a shower chair, have someone there to help you in and out, and have them dry the floor after the shower is done so you don’t slip. If your waterproof bandage is lifting, wrap the site in plastic wrap to keep water out before you enter the water.

I agree. A shower seat or a bath transfer chair is so much safer.

Great tips but HIP and KNEE replacement transfers with DME are slightly different. I am unsure if Allison in an OT but what was shown was very questionable . Maybe consider following through with completes steps for hip vs knee and adhere to precautions.

I just watched two of these things that said shower normally just don't get it wet. Not pointing the shower at it sure, but can I wash the area or not? It's going to get wet.

Back up into shower with your walker. That turn you did in the shower with the walker is pretty dangerous and wouldn't work for most THAs. Also leave walker outside the shower in a tight spot like that you're going to trip all over yourself. In the hospital we train ppl "In with the good, out with the bad" the back up method also works better for neck and back surgery for people who have lifting and twisting restrictions.

Post ops can vary widely based on procedure and patient as well as types of dressing used. Please follow your care taker's guidelines! Not all dressings and bandages used are water proof. Ask! Some patients are home within hours of joint replacement. Others may remain in the hospital several days or even a week. It depends!

I was send home with an ice machine , no cane, no walker as I had one. Actually I had to ask for each and every item I needed such as breathing machine or a simple 32 oz. cup with straw. Where can my care giver get me items I need .

Your hospital has a better policy. The one I had kicked me out in 48 hours. Hip replaced. I urinated once and they helped me because my elbow is deformed from rheumatoid. Their was no shower, no new bandages, no support stockings. I have insurance.

I had THR two days ago. The surgery was at 11:10, and I was home at 4:50. I wish I had had 48 hours in the hospital.

What about the mechanics of showering? For example I understand you shouldn't bend over to wash your lower legs and feet like you normally would.

I won't be able to shower until I can climb in and out of a giant claw-foot tub. I foresee sponge baths for weeks in my case.

I think telling people to hold on to the wall is a really bad idea. walls are slippery!!!!!! they offer no traction.

I just had knee surgery on Friday. I wasn't given any instructions for showering, pt/ot, or anything else. They just patted the back of my hand and wheeled me out. Seriously not impressed with that possible
